Top 1 Magic Cutting Tools In The World: Face mill CNC
A face mill is a cutter designed for facing as opposed to e.g., creating a pocket (end mills). The cutting edges of face mills are always located along its sides. As such it must always cut in a horizontal direction at a given depth coming from outside the stock. Multiple teeth distribute the chip load, and since the teeth are normally disposable carbide inserts, this combination allows for very large and efficient face milling...

The US took a ballbearing to a technology expo in Europe circa 1992. It was microscopic. One needed a microscope to see it. We really thought we had arrived. The Swiss took one of them, drilled a hole through it and sent it back to us. I admire a great sense of humor.

Why do they face the large pieces, the one in the video was 1m x 1.20m and quite a depth. It almost looked as if it was being done at the point of casting.

Granted, those are the best mills for the money for work load, but they were a pain to set. With some of the face mills we had that were up to 96 inserts and had 4 wipers; it was very time consuming. Switching over to ceramic and also diamond impregnated inserts cut down on wear and increased up time on each mill head

I bought a chinese cnc that was recalled due to an error--there was soy sauce in the hydraulic system instead of oil, then every time I ordered a replacement part it would come in one of those square white paper containers with a small wire handle like asian restaurant take out. Strangely, if you machined a part, an hour later you felt like making another one for some reason.

they are all molded from a few different powders from the beginning though, so they aren't cut out from a metal sheet if thats what you thought ;D

IN3 yeah I got that. well as I said they are all molded together with different powders depending on what you wish to cut with it, so I couldnt answer what "metal" its made out of since we coat so many different cutting tools in this gold coloured coating.

Why water isn't used? For example see the metal color at 3:15, too hot...
@EternitP8
@EternitP8 7 жыл бұрын
You usually don't use coolant when milling steel like this. The inserts are made to take the heat. If you apply water to them it may cause them wear out prematurely.
@deathknight014
@deathknight014 7 жыл бұрын
Peppins32 you also run into the issue of the chips cooling faster than the machine can spit them out. usually results in a bad cut or chips being stuck to the material.

I'm no machinists so maybe this is obvious to those of you who are but what is the purpose of removing so much material? Seems like you could start with a smaller block and save your self some time
@andrewmoore6108
@andrewmoore6108 6 жыл бұрын
omzig18 you have to have something to hold onto while you machine the part. Sometimes adding material is the only way you give yourself something to hold onto. Most of these videos are just showing the abilities of the tool though so they take a massive unnecessary cut under ideal conditions. You usually don't take cuts like these very often

in college we had an older guy who insisted in running only 3 inserts on a 6 insert sandvik button facemill. ran it around 1200 rpm and feed it as hard as he could. "the sparks are just impurities being burned out. when he caught the oil soaked floor on fire i told him not to worry. it was just the impurities coming out of the wood.
