I've been here since the beginning and these recaps are fun. I remember watching all of these videos when they first went live years ago. It's amazing how much gear has changed and how much KZfaq has evolved. It's been a cool experience watching your own journey too. You were very kind when we met for a brief photo at the NYC Guitar Center after your clinic with Rebea. You both played Boss Katana amps, if anyone is wondering. Wishing you the best.

I have enjoyed your content for years. First came across your KZfaq channel in 2017 when I was in hospital. I was in hospital for 3 months. I have crohns disease and spent a very long time in there after getting sepsis. And I watched every single one of your videos. So thank you Dave for getting me through those dark days. One day I will get the chance to meet you ( and the boys from andertons ) and shake your hand and no doubt get to play a guitar in front of you very badly ( as I’m nowhere near as good on a guitar as my head thinks I am ) but that’s not the point is it. it’s not how good you are it’s how much joy a guitar gives you 👍🏻 but just wanted to say thank you bro and keep those videos coming 🎸

Oh! Mate! Did not expect that! (In your Top Amps) I bought the last Peavey Classic 20 from Andersons (After your review). It was a return which I snapped up after driving from Cornwall to get it. Absolutely love it. I've paired it with a Barefaced 1 X 12 Cab and it sounds sick.

I can't believe the amp I have actually is on your list! I got a Bassbreaker 15 watt combo a few years ago and I love it. Took me a while to figure out how to dial in tones I like, but its been great. Only 15 watts but I can hardly turn the volume up a quarter of the way in my room, its so damn loud!

The Bassbreaker is amazing! I've got an FSR Bassbreaker 30R in lacquered tweed that is loaded with a Celestion G12H30 instead of the V30 and to put it mildly, it is a balls out 60's & 70's rock and roll machine! The perfect blending of Fender and Marshall in my opinion.

That little Orange Tiny Terror is a seriously awesome amp head! I've wanted to try the Peavey for the longest time...the only downside of read of it was that the chrome face plate I guess can be difficult to read sometimes like on a dark stage. But I suppose most everything is difficult to read on a dark stage 😅

My favorite less expensive amp is a Crate 15 Watt solid-state combo with a 12-inch speaker and reverb that I bought c. 2017 for $99. I was using a modeler, so it didn’t need a great tone on its own. (Though I used it on its own a few times, and it was fine.) It was plenty loud enough for the gigs I played. (Including ones where they were going to mic the amp no matter how big it was.) I liked it so much, and it was so inexpensive that I bought one for a friend. Then I bought a second one for stereo. I still have my pair as backups to my Roland JC-40.

Its a lesser known brand but Kustom made a tube combo amp and I picked up mine used for $250. After lots of experimenting between different tubes with the built in bias switch I stuck with the 6L6s and honestly its one of the most solid tube amps I've played, rivaling vintage Fenders that I've tried.

When I was looking to start recording, I really wanted a proper amp and not just my pathetic digital simulacrum I was using at the time, and really for me it came down to two options: Blackstar HT or Fender Bassbreaker. For some reason the Bassbreakers are quite a bit more expensive here in Germany than the ones I've seen on the UK market second-hand, so I opted for the HT20 and I'm glad I did. I didn't think it'd be so easy for me to find "my" voice in an amp, but damn if it doesn't deliver exactly what I want out of an amp. I'm enjoying this series of videos you're doing, Rob, but I would ask that you look a bit into the ethics of generative art such as you've been using in your recent thumbnails. I know it delivers results quickly and easily, but the AI is trained on hundreds of thousands of artworks, very few of which were provided with permission by the original artists.

Those Gamma amps are insane starter amps. Plenty loud and really solid built-in sounds, plus a simple interface with no screens/menus to learn. I used to teach lessons out of a Guitar Center and they were my go-to for use in lessons as well as my recommendation to anyone buying an amp on a budget. (and no I was not and am not being paid by Guitar Center to recommend them).

Orange micro terror is the dogs! But personally I would replace with the micro dark version (or the stamp possibly as it’s essentially a dark in pedal form with a boost) purely because of the fx loop. Also I prefer the shape control on the dark rather than the tone control on the terror. I have both versions and find myself gravitating to the micro dark more than the micro terror.

The Bassbreaker 15 is the sweetspot amp. The one that's not mentioned here, probably since it was cheap and ubiquitous is the Peavey Bandit, especially the last Transtube versions. They were/are reliable, loud, overlooked amps. Hint: change the speaker, it'll work wonders.

Peavey classic 20 is underrated and the best compromise between a fender and a Marshall you can get, still the Dsl20 could be had for less than 500 dollars a few years ago and they were a lot of amp for around 500 bucks but I’ve Al felt the Peavey classic series was severely underrated and overlooked if you can find one for around 300 or less in any form it’d probably be worth it especially if you’re kinda wanting to get into a fender ish amp but are coming from a Marshall style or I suppose it would serve the same purpose dipping your toes into something a little higher gain than the fenders but not completely different. I feel like the peavey classic series is probably on more of our favorite recordings than anyone admits. The old ones were built like tanks and real workhorses on the road.

If I can add my own two cents I'm going to throw in the Fender Mustang 3. 1x12 100 watt combo modeling amp. The clean and crunch tones on it are pretty solid, the high gain tones leave a little to be desired, BUT, with a good overdrive or distortion pedal thrown on over a clean channel it sounds fantastic. It has different effects that are all customizable to your liking. As well as 100 different customizable tone settings. I don't believe it's available for purchase other than second hand anymore unfortunately. It would run about $450 CAD new, which in my opinion is perfect for any intermediate bedroom/just starting to gig guitarist.

The Peavey Classic 20s people mention are good Laney LC15 and LC30 are quite good. And that Harley Benton Tube 15 is much better than it has any right to be. Basically it's more or less an uglier Laney Cub, from a less 'respectable' brand name. but it's 80% up there with a Blues Junior for a third the price. Bassbreakers are nice. Those older Egnator Rebel heads crop up for £250-300 second hand too. But, for me, the best choice would be a second hand Vox AC15C1. You can get them cheap enough if you collect in person. Loud, proud, normal and top boost real spring and trem - only lacking an FX loop, a bit heavy to carry and loud but lacking the attenuators some competitors like the Marshall Origin and Bassbreaker have. Can always upgrade it to Blue Alnicos later. New, Vox AC10 also really nice and you can snap them up for just under £400 if you shop around and time it right. Also good is a second hand Marshall Origin 20 and one of those dirt cheap Harley Benton stock 1x12" cabs... and upgrade the speaker to a Creamback later, or go all the way to a 2x12 or 4x12 if you have a sadistic streak. A stereo pair of Vox Pathfinder 15Rs would be nice for a clean pedal platform. And similarly, sometimes a Roland JC will come up second hand in this price range. A second hand Ampeg Micro VR makes a nice loud clean pedal platform guitar head too, just upgrade the fan for a near silent Noctua one with the 24v/12v converter. And again, use a cheap 1x12 or 2x12 - and upgrade the speakers later.

Mmmm. That's strange. Are amp sales down? Looooong ago i learnt 2 things. 1/Rubbish in, louder rubbish out. 2/why lug around heavy kit? So regardless of the shape of the guitar, get good pickups. Unless you reeeeeally want a Les Paul or you only want the sound .... just get the pickups, don't they use di marzio? I also now get my sound from the pre-amp stage with AMT Bricks and a reverb pedal .... at the venue, just plug into their mixer .... get in ear monitors too. I started my 'minimalist' journey with the Zoom floor guitar processor (the one with valves and the 2 pedals), but discovered the AMT Bricks as after a while with the Zoom I figured the sound i was going to stick to, so i was able to down-size a little more. You can now down-size EVEN MOOÒRE with that Mooer GTRS guitar, which also has wireless connection to where-ever you fancy plugging yourself into and bluetooth connection to a little floor pedals to choose between 4 sounds that also has a tuner!! You can even control it with an app on your phone!!

Hi Megan, thanks for your comment. I get where you’re coming from with AI art and the concern about impacting real artists. Just to clarify, when I use ChatGPT to create art, like the thumbnail, it’s not taking anything from actual artists. It’s more like using a tool to make something new, based on ideas I feed into it. Think of it as using a new kind of paintbrush, not replacing the painter. It’s a way to add to the creativity, not take away from it. I’m all for supporting real artists and making sure they get credit for their work.

Don’t be a fanny. It’s a tool. Use it.

@@RobChappers remember in the '80s when sampling became a thing? For a while people were just making music and taking drum tracks and clips from anything they could find. The amen break, for instance, very famously was sampled from Amen Brother and went on to become almost a genre of music in its own right. The thing is many of those original artists didn't get paid for those samples. It wasn't until the 90s when music companies got really litigious that we started to see people actually have to pay a license for that music sample. The kind of AI art you're doing now is the visual equivalent of the '80s audio sample. These models are trained on people's work. Believe me, I've built non-AI generative art programs before, it's not the computer that's the problem. It's the statistical model generated from other people's art. It's just a machine that generates plagiarism. Anyway, I'm sorry, I know KZfaq comments are not the place to have nuanced discussions about these kinds of things. And I more than appreciate your reply but as a software engineer I just got a point out what's really going on.
