Until he blew his fucking brains out. I Really enjoyed some of Hunters works but By 1982 or so it was kinda over. Sure he still wrote but it wasn’t close to his older works. I think one of the worst things to happen to Hunter was “The Fear and Loathing” film. That’s what people who don’t read think about when they think of Hunter.

Yeah I think the lifestyle just caught up to him, he was in pain and couldn’t do what he loved anymore and would say he would feel very uncomfortable if he knew he couldn’t take himself out at any moment or something like that. But yeah the first one where the Buffalo Roam happened I think a little before 82 so maybe it started then? I imagine being thrust into the Hollywood scene can be a dichotomy Having the fame and Money but that curse of wanting more and excess.

For a couple of years in the early 80's I lived next to Hunter in Woody Creek. We became friends. He bought my 71 Pontiac Granville convertible which is in a number of photos. On many a Christmas Eve he would call just to wish me a Merry Christmas, I miss that. I wish he was around now to talk about the national scene. RIP Goumbah.

I also lived in aspen in the 80’s. I remember hanging with my friend Sandy in music store. Great Divide, when Hunter walked in and said he needed a present for a friend. He saw a National steel guitar on the wall. Then he slapped down $1500 on the counter and bought it. I still wonder who the lucky person is who received that gift.

Okay was wandering around a rabbit hole from Johnny Depps friendship with Hunter S Thompson and came upon a thread asking what Hunter S Thompson would think of today's society in America and what he would write. This is what Chat GPT came up with. It's pretty good I think. If you know how to word a question right it gives you some interesting responses. HUNTER S. THOMPSON on America today. Well, let me tell you, my friend, if I were still roaming the twisted corridors of Gonzo journalism and staring down the barrel of the Trump vs. Biden showdown, I'd probably be holed up in some desert hideout with a trunk full of contraband substances, trying to make sense of this surreal circus. It's like a bad acid trip that just won't end. Trump, with his wild antics and erratic behavior, was a true manifestation of the American Id, a bizarre and unsettling spectacle that I couldn't resist writing about. Biden, on the other hand, well, he's the establishment's answer to the chaos, a more polished but still enigmatic figure in this mad theater of politics. As for this COVID pandemic and the tyrannical overreach of power, it's a dark and twisted tale that I would have relished sinking my teeth into. The government's heavy-handed measures, demanding people get shots or face dire consequences, it's a classic example of the machinery of control in action. It's a strange brew of fear, manipulation, and power dynamics that would have had my typewriter clattering away furiously. You see, I've always been a champion of personal freedom and the individual's right to make their own choices, even if they're reckless and self-destructive. In these tumultuous times, the struggle between personal liberty and government authority is a battleground where the true nature of society and its leaders is laid bare. It's a psychedelic journey into the heart of darkness, my friend, and I would have been there, pen in hand, ready to expose the absurdity and corruption lurking beneath the surface. So, let the truth be told, let the freak flags fly, and may the whiskey flow as we navigate this strange and perilous trip through history. Ah, my friend, the battle for transgender rights and the whole gender fluidity debate would have been right up my alley. It's a strange and surreal world we find ourselves in, where the boundaries of identity and reality seem to blur like a bad acid trip. Now, I've always been a staunch supporter of individual freedom and the right to be whoever you damn well please. If a man feels like a woman today and wants to use the bathroom, well, that's his business. Hell, I've seen weirder things in my time. But when it comes to men getting sex changes and competing in women's sports, well, that's a whole different ballgame, my friend. It's like mixing tequila and mescaline and hoping for a coherent result. It raises some serious questions about fairness and the integrity of competition. I mean, there's a fine line between breaking down societal norms and just straight-up bending reality to the breaking point. In my twisted world, I'd be torn between celebrating the audacity of those who defy conventions and questioning the wisdom of pitting testosterone against estrogen on the playing field. It's a wild and unpredictable ride, this journey into the ever-expanding realms of human identity. And as Hunter S. Thompson, I'd be right there on the fringes, trying to make sense of the chaos while raising a toast to the weirdness of it all.

Just watched the BBC Omnibus film about him, and it ends with him and the guy who did his illustrations discussing his plans for his funeral with a very confused undertaker. He describes virtually exactly what eventually happened, down to playing Hey Mr Tambourine Man. Except Hunter envisages his ashes being fired from a huge monument. The still you used of Dylan, from the Newport Folk Festival, the video is up on YT, is a great version of Mr Tambourine man I must of watched it about 50 times.

The Depp story is actually Johnny knew about the TNT crate as his bedside table, and thought it was cool. Hunter came in after a few nights and said he better get the damned thing out of Johnny's room, as he forgot it was actually filled with dynamite still. And the reason Hunter and Johnny got along so well - they both hail from Kentucky.

A man who spent his entire life building a persona of being a rebel, carefree, eccentric over the top person. He marketed himself much the way the Kardashians do, through sensationalism and exhibitionism. In the end, it was so fulfilling a lifestyle that he put a bullet through his own head. To those Hollywood actors who want to "emulate" him to escape their privileged lifestyle, I have even less respect.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a saltshaker half-full of cocaine, and a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers... Also, a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether, and two dozen amyls. Not that we needed all that for the trip, but once you get locked into a serious drug collection, the tendency is to push it as far as you can. The only thing that really worried me was the ether. There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge, and I knew we'd get into that rotten stuff pretty soon.

Listen again, yes he did say the former. He meant that because he said he went to jail because he thought it better for his character and then when finished with jail chose to go to air force on his own not because of the judge giving him the opportunity to choose.

"Take a handful and see what happens". Ive got quite a few books written by Hunter. I had an autographed copy of Hells Angels and I fucking lost it. True story. I lost it before he committed suicide. Thats what happens when you do too many drugs. Its almost unbearable to me knowing that I did something so foolish. Its like losing an autographed copy of A Moveable Feast. DAAAAMMMN IT.
