I am not going to say the original was better, but it was at least just as good. But it told the story in, what, a dozen episodes? And it actually got to a satisfying ending. Plus, I never liked the American version of the wife. She was a great character and we'll played, but having her as a prominent public figure subverted the impact of the original ending. They should have written the same character as FU's sister or co-worker or some such. Making her such a strong woman stole any shock that the original ending would have had, if events had let them get there. As things turned out, I guess it would have been impossible to do that, and she wound up being perfect for the ending (far inferior, but not completely terrible) actually used.

I thought Robin Wright was brilliant in it. Her acting was superb, unlike Spacey who, as it turned out, was playing someone not too dissimilar to himself

One that was missed in at LEAST the honorable mentions was the British "Steptoe and Son ": with the great Wilfred Brambell (who was Paul McCartney's grandfather in A Hard Days Night as well - "he's a clean old man") and the legendary Redd Foxx in Sanford and Son - BOTH very funny shows

"Sanford and Son isn't on here?" That's an Americanized remake of the British show "Steptoe and Son".

Rainn Wilson made the US Office something really special. Dwight's character was something never seen on TV before. A beetroot farmer from a pre-industrial German lineage who still maintained their customs, set in the modern day. Almost like Mr Burns in The Simpsons, that character alone can be the source of a million historically referenced jokes and gags.

Generally speaking, people are going to find the show from the country they're from to be better because they each use humor from their own countries. Since humor from USA and UK is very different, people usually prefer the Office that is from their country.

Sanford and Son definitely deserved not only a mention, but also a place on this list. For those who don’t know, it was a remake of the British classic Steptoe and Son. And like most of the other mentions on this list, it managed to take an idea that seemed so uniquely British at the time, and still seamlessly crafted it into pure Americana.

Wiki I didn't know about this until I saw a documentary/interview series on BBC i player where Frank Skinner was interviewing guests, talking about the BBC i player and what it had to offers to online viewers.

i agree +tom helms, i've been enjoying the first season and the second season's first few episodes, but it really just seems like a dark-humor soap opera... which is fine, and the acting, not only is good, but a soap opera cast doesn't really need to give a shit... it's always hyperbolic arching of eyebrows or pursing of lips, i cannot keep an interest in the majority of the legislation and social needs, but the acting is consistently invested in where the character are caught up in all the backstabbing... besides that half a star and maybe another for the sheer sense of connecting their dots, then maybe another half+ of a star for the darkness of the comedy, i ultimately just cringe at how baited i feel in watching people i don't care anything about... it feels like watching clickbait

You forgot Steptoe and Son which was converted to American TV as Sanford and Son. The first season or two were basically shot for shot line for line remakes but with only minor dialog changes for the African-American dialect and US localization.

In the case of Whose Line, I think what helped the American version to succeed was the presence of Ryan Stiles, Colin Mochrie, and other assorted comedians that had appeared in the original UK version.

Ahjani Hello. I watched the US version once without ever having seen the UK one at all. Typical cop show trash; mandatory special effects sudden parked car explosions, mandatory gratuitous violence, mandatory no purpose sexual innuendo in crowded streets via scantily clad young women extras who have nothing to do with the story, mandatory quip-heavy dialogue, and mandatory commercial breaks every ten minutes. They may as well have added a mandatory laugh track. I’d heard of the UK series but it didn’t play in the US. Anyway, I turned the channel about halfway through. A year or so later, PBS started showing the UK series. Sublime. Perfect cast, beautifully written so as to capture both time periods exactly while steadily and subtly revealing his story within the context of each episode. I couldn’t help but care about him. It’s so truthful a fiction. I’d love to see the whole thing again.

You'll be pleased to know that in the UK, _Life on Mars_ did so well that they actually commissioned a sequel based in the 1980s called _Ashes to Ashes_ which is also equally as good. Sadly, I don't think there'll ever be a _Jump They Say._

I think it wasn’t as high because, a lot of these shows weren’t rlly remakes they were jus American versions whereas shameless us is a straight up remake of the uk the only difference being uk is set in Manchester as us in Chicago. Other than that same character names same episode plots same scenes etc. Otherwise it would be be higher.

Here's another UK TV SHOW that was remade for American TV - The British sitcom, George And Mildred became USA's The Ropers. George And Mildred's last name was Roper - but, the characters' first names were altered for the U.S. version. BTW, Rebecca is my favourite WatchMojo host.

This was a cool list - and many I didn't even know about! The debate on the US/UK versions of "The Office" is tiresome. They are both genius! They were made for different audiences, and produced using different styles. It's not right to put them side by side and say which is better. They're both fantastic.

On the Canadian side... -Dragon's Den, started in UK, but the Canadian version is the best known. The American version is known as Shark Tank. -Canada's Worst Driver, same as above. But I think America's Worst Driver is something completely different.

They really weren't that different, a lot of the same people were on both. The main difference was the American audience laughing uproariously at stuff that the British crowd would have lightly chuckled at.

Kitchen Nightmares USA dishonourable mention...the UK one was x1000000000's better. No dramatic music, no fake set up scenes, no frills just authentic entertaining TV.

Now, I may be wrong, but not to my knowledge. American shows are nearly all screened on British tv. British shows tend to be originals. America prefers to remake British shows though, instead of just screening the original to make it more American. Apparently Americans don't quite get British humour.

What Grainne said, British audiences can watch US shows and get the same experience Americans do, but not the other way around. The humour is hard for Americans to get a grasp of so they remake it.

That's because they are quite different. British comedy is way more sarcastic and Ironic. Also as in real life, they are very self -deprecating. Americans on the other hand...well,they are not.

Yeah, can't argue with the top 2. Both the US and UK versions worked incredibly well, despite being vastly different in style, because the respective styles were perfectly suited to the time and place they were produced. The UK House of Cards is stagey, almost melodramatic, camp even, slightly ridiculous but a hell of a lot of fun. If the US version had tried to imitate it stylistically it would have been laughable, and not in a good way.
