Welcome to 2 Dudes and a 6 Pack, where today we’ll be looking at the top 10 Belgian beers. Widely regarded as one of the best beer producing countries in the world, what ten beers rein supreme? We use a composite rating of Beer Advocate and Rate Beer ratings to determine our top 10. Ahead of time, I’d like to apologize for my pronunciation of some of these beers.
Starting of the list at number 10 is St. Bernardus Abby 12. This Quadrupel style beer has an ABV of 10 percent with an overall composite rating of 4.28 out of five.
9 on the list is Cantillon’s Fou Foune. This lambic style beer brings fruity notes to the top 10 with an ABV of 5 percent. It also features a composite rating of 4.28 out of 5.
8 on the list is 3 Fonteinen Oude Geuze Vintage. Another Lambic style beer, this classic Belgian beer has a 6 percent ABV and a total rating of 4.29.
The 7 spot on the list is Lou Pepe Pure Kriek. The second beer from Cantillon. Another Lambic style fruit beer, the cherry based beer has an ABV of 5 percent and a total rating of 4.29.
6th and just out of the top 5 is Biabaer Lambik from Cantillon. As lambics begin to dominate this list, the beer has a unique vintage every year. The current summer lambic has a 5 percent ABV for a composite rating of 4.33.
At number 5 is 3 Fonteinen’s Framboos. This special raspberry lambic has an ABV of 6 percent and notches a composite rating of 4.335 out of 5.
Batting 4th on the list of top 10 Belgian beers is (Ves-Vel-Teren’s) Wesveleteren’s 8. A break from the lambics, this Belgian Strong Ale from the classic Trappist brewery has an 8 percent ABV and a total rating of 4.34.
Number 3 is Rochefort 10. Another classic trappist beer from the Rochefort brewery, this Quadrupel style beer as a 11.3 percent ABV and a total composite rating of 4.385.
2nd and just out of the top 10 is 3 Fontenien’s Zenne Y Frontera. The return of this lambic style beer has a higher 7 percent ABV and a total composite rating of 4.42 out of 5.
The top spot on our list of top 10 Belgian beers is Westvleteren 12. This quadruple 10.2 percent ABV beer is one of the most sought after beers in the world. With a commanding composite rating of 4.52, it makes sense why.
Well, there you have it. The top 10 Belgian beers in the world. Dominated by lambics and quadruple trappist beers, a host of 4 plus composite rated beers didn’t make the cut simply because of the overall quality you find in Belgium. For me, as a Belgian and beer-connaisseur, my top is as follows. 1. Chimay Tripel 2. Rochefort 6 3. Chimay Blue 4. Orval 5. Maredsous Tripel

Orval for me will always be one of my top 3 beers. This is a composite rating so it's not my personal rankings, but all of those you listed are fantastic. And even though it's gotten a bit more widely produced, I'll almost always get a Hoegaarden when I see it on tap.

I think you should rate all the beers it's style wise. Like top 10 Belgium wit, top ten lambics, top ten stouts and so on. That'll be much better. You can compare two different styles together.

@@bandsbikesandboozereviews German beer is great...but sometimes their purity law can handcuff them. I give the edge to Belgian beer simply because it thrives at more styles. British beers have their place but I don't think they have the wide breadth to compete with Germany and Belgium. For me Czech beers aren't even in the same league.

@@2DudesAnda6Pack Dude! Don't get me wrong, I love Belgian beer and the ones chosen in the video are great. Their lambics are superb but for Germany I think the purity law is a great thing, it usually guarantees a great beer (especially the Munich beers). There's so many local beers in Germany that don't travel outside the country that really need to be tasted. Some are sublime. Same for the Czech stuff. All lager originates from the Czech Republic.

I discovered them in 2016, best decision yet!! My friend requires a lot of rum to get high and he was high before he finished the first bottle of Westmalle when I introduced it to him.

Spent last week in Belgium trying at least 4 beers a day and a new one each time. The best ones I tried were Brugs Zot Dubbel and Gulden Draak Classic, those were unbelievable

Gulden Draak classic is fantastic (haven't had the Brugs before). But really, it's hard to go wrong with most Belgian beers! 4 a day is a good pace.

It seems wrong to me to have one list for lambiek style beers and the others. Lambiek style beers have added fruit flavours which make them more agreeable for non-beer lovers to drink them. They just belong to an entirely different category. I'm not saying your numbers are wrong, it's just the premise that is incorrect in my opinion.

I can see where you're coming from. There are a large number of lambieks here. Although the beer is fermented with the fruit naturally so it is basically just an added ingredient (much better than the new sour craze, in my opinion). I'd much rather drink one of the other variations listed, but since it's still classified as a beer I didn't want to pick and choose styles.

Well you're slightly wrong yourself there. You're trying to mention Kriek Lambiek, which is brewed with cherries. Regular Lambiek or Geuze is devoid of extra fruit flavour, though ofcourse past the sour they are very fruity beers in general. I recommend Oude Geuze Marriage Parfait. Very sour and might be difficult to get used to, but imo extremely delish

some say that nr 10 and nr 1 are the same brands ... I like Kasteelbeer, Omer, Ter dolen, Kwak, Oerbier, Ambetanterik, Tongerlo, ... but not all at the same time :p

You can never go wrong with anything from Rochefort. Of course for me you really can't go wrong with just about anything form Belgium.

Yeah, some of those Trappist beers like Rochefort were the first ones I tried that really got me into beer. Which Rochefort do you like the best?

Yes, that one is great! And if I'm not mistaken, they switch up one of the hops every year, so it's slightly different with each release.

Tongerloo Blonde in combination with a good meat dish that is what locals are taking, I am from Belgium. They are making a lot of new local beers all the time. A lot of beers are not for export yet. We have many local beers. Royal Palm from the Palm Breweries, Geuze and Kriek, Quentin beers, Oud Beersel lambic, - Started brewing ca. 1820, The Lindemans beers, Rodenbach with Grenadine,

@@2DudesAnda6Pack That is a good idea, 5 km from my village is good beer shop with all kind of local beers and new crafted beers. Trying all those beers can give you much satisfaction for the flavours you like. Ask the locals what they are drinking and what kind of beers they are chosing for a certain dish.

of course West-Vleteren 12 is wanted all over the world, it's so rare, because it's only local brewing not factory like it all still happens in the abbey itself and they sell to non-corporate customers first

Grimbergen both dark and blonde are excellent beers. Also Maredsous are never discussed but are excellent as well.

If you're into unique craft beers with a story you should try "Rio Reserva" from "De Struise Brouwers" or the best beer I've ever had "La Frontiére"

More useful would be best in certain styles- best lambic, gueuze, farmhouse, trappist, abbey, etc Also do look fors by region. Best Belgian beers should include Duvel, Chimay, Stella, and Palm.

Oh for sure. I like to look just at the country first (I find it interesting the breakdown of style for each country and how vastly different one country to another is). But I will focus on specific styles? There a style in particular you'd be most interested in?

I'll have to check both of those out! Sometimes I find brewmaster or special editions to be a bit gimmicky (I'm looking at you Guinness), but I don't see Gulden Draak doing that, so I need to go find that one to test out!

The Gulden Draak one is very good ! Though you should try the beers from my favorite brewers , ''Het Nest" / Van Moll (Dutch) , De Struise Brouwers ,... ;)

Three Floyds and Founders might be two of the top to bottom best breweries around in the States. But everyone has gone hog wild for IPAs it's hard to find other styles, which is why I still try to hunt down Belgium imports. There's like a history and taste you just can't get in an American beer.

I really enjoy trappist beers. With all of them brewed in monasteries you can really taste the quality. And I enjoy a good lambic as well! Not as sugary or anything like the current sours.

For me, Orval is one of my personal favorites. Probably be in my top 5 beers. Sadly, it didn't make the general beer reviewer's top 10...but that's more a testament to the incredible quality of Belgian beer.

Kasteelbier donker is my favorite beer (one of 🤪) orval is my nr 2 I’m from Belgium and 45 and never tasted al the Belgian beers...we have more than 1600 beers ! 😉

Orval is one of my all time favorites as well! One of my first outside the box beers. One of those "didn't realize beer could taste like this" beers from waaaay back in the day.

I love a Duvel. It was one of the first Belgian beers I ever had. Loved it ever since. Have you had the Duvel Tripel Hop before? Kind of like Duvel does an IPA, if you're into that.

I've had Karmeliet. Very good beer. Don't think I've tried Staffe Hendrick before. I'll have to check it out (especially with the weather getting cooler).

first of all, the butchering of names was spot on. secondly and more importantly tho, think this list is pretty bad. At least coming from a Belgian point of view as every area over here really has at least one local brewed beer and generally some unique beers to that area and a lot of those aren't really shipped outside of the country and/or are less commercial/known.

Thank you for your input. As mentioned possibly a half dozen times throughout the video, this list is solely based on the composite ratings of two well respected beer services, which are made up of beer drinkers from around the world. The list is based on what world-wide beer drinkers have rated the beers.

We have 1 beer, commercially sold per 10000 people in the country. Quite a few more when you count the ones only on tap at the breweries, sold to local cafe's or the "monks beer" monks brew for themselves for general consumption.

Well it's a composite, which often makes the rankings completely different as users for each tend to rate their beers differently (BA uses have an over indulgent fascination with IPAs currently...which was true with porters about four years ago). BA also doesn't take rating numbers into consideration, so a beer with 5 reviews can be rated higher than one with 500 (when in reality the 5 reviews probably just came from the owners anyway). So the ratings are often very different and not just a reading. Ideally there would be a third source but the other sources don't have as extensive beer libraries. So the point of the videos are to show the top beers without favoritism.

"Top 10 belgian beers" yet its all lambics and ofcourse number 1 is Westvleteren 12 to appease the hype.. (And yet St. Bernardus Abt 12 which is almost identical to Westvleteren 12 is at the very bottom of the list? How is that supposed to make sense) No offense and in all due respect, these are all godly top notch beers. But the world of Belgian beers is huge and based on this list its blatantly obvious you simply never bothered to explore it. Where is Westmalle Tripel, Paix Dieu Tripel, Hoegaarden Verboden Vrucht / La Fruit Defendu, Val Dieu Grand Cru, Kasteel Blond, Delirium Tremens?

Thanks for your input. As stated throughout the video, these are mathematical composite ratings based on thousands of reviews on Beer Advocate and Rate beer. I did not personally select these beers. This is just what the math indicates are the top rated beers. And as the ratings are very tight, there often isn't much difference between 1st and 10th (like a 100 meter race, difference between first and last is often a fraction of a second). Most of my personal favorites did not make the list, but I wasn't going to alter numbers to appease my own favorites. And sadly, with Hoegaarden, I don't see a day when a Budweiser/InBev owned beer will ever make the list.

2 Dudes And a 6 Pack Yeah i did read your other comments where you stated just that, and i do owe you an apology for coming off harsh. Problem is however when basing a top 10 solely on whatever gets the highest ratings on beer rating apps it'll be all hype and not much else. As for your point on Hoegaarden/InBev i certainly get where you're coming from, but i guarantee you that Verboden Vrucht / La Fruit Defendu is a damn magical beer, and i urge you to try it

Ha it's all good. I'm all good with other perspectives (until people start breaking out the random derogatory terms for whatever reason). I went with this rating system as I thought it would be the fairest (I don't count beers that have like 12 reviews because those are normally just locals overrating the beers). I still remember the days when all the top beers on Beer Advocate were imperial stouts. Now it's all IPAs. I'll have to look into some sort of tweaking and historical averages. I'll have to see if I can track that Hoegaarden down. The original was one of my first Belgian beers probably 12 years ago. Still one of my favorite tap beers of all time. I personally wish great wheat beers would get more recognition. But in the current landscape unless it's pumped with hops it won't happen (at least in the States).

Oh I'm sorry. Blåbær is just a Danish word, and the only language that the letters Ø and Å exists in is Danish. That was why I was confused. Great video elsewise :)

These were the beers that rated out the best (based on drinker reviews). In my opinion Belgium makes the best beers in the world and many of my favorites didn't make the cut (Orval and Duvel will always be personal favorites). The average beer drinker's tastes seem to have changed in recent years. I remember when all the top beers were imperial porters and heavier beers...now it's all about IPA and fruitiness. I bet in a few years it'll change again and maybe more of the classic, non-lambic style beers like gulden draak will be in it.

@@spinessticksandhooks4640 I'm with you with that. I think 90% of IPAs are bitter just to be bitter or just taste exactly the same. There are some that I really like, but I've had way more that just taste like moldy pot wrapped in musty gym socks.
