Loved my time with Sable, love thinking how games can still surprise me with their ascetics and atmosphere. Hoping devs make something new very quickly. Happy Holidays!

I really dig the aesthetic but games like Abzu which seems similar was engaging to me for about 30-60mins and when I put it down I didn't really feel the need to pick it back up. No story, no gameplay loop like a rpg system or combat or anything giving purpose to exploration. I might pick sable up far down the road when it's $5 but I'm afraid it will ultimately just be a vapid spectacle.

@@nfb4027 I recommend it, obviously, other than being visually original, the game can be as long or short as you want (I don't want to give too much away). It's about growing up, moving on, learning about the world and yourself etc. There weren't as many secrets as I would have liked and I agree with you I didn't enjoy Journey as much as others, but this really was a lot of fun with the minimal puzzles, catchy music and just collecting different items.

@@hafaball My hope is that the game is sort of a trial run that they can iterate on and do some sort of rpg or adventure type game with the same aesthetic.

Good list. I adored Toem, Unpacking and Death's Door. I love how much variety indie games provide. 😊 One of my other favorite indie games this year is Wytchwood. Came out a bit too late to make any lists, but I enjoyed every minute of it.

I loved Death’s Door. And yes, I got my umbrella trophy and platinum. I figured if I went straight in with an umbrella run without ever checking out the power of other weapons I would never know how much harder the combat was with merely an umbrella to tickle enemies with. A few challenging fights, but otherwise not as tough as I expected. 😁

No surprise, we get a nice list here! Sable my #1 indie this year, over Eastward, Ender Lilies & Death's Door. I still need to play Inscryption, which does look fantastic! If it had come out on console I would have already played it ... I heard the dev say recently on twitter that he's working on consoles at the moment. But I may bite the bullet, buy it on Steam, and hope my old laptop can handle it LOL. 2021 a great year for indies, as well as for JRPGs! That combo makes it the best new game year for me since 2017. We don't need those (missing) big releases to have a fantastic year with videogames!

I really loved playing through Inscryption and learning more about it after finishing it. I also have been trying to find a game that gives that certain vibe that Inscryption gives; not necessarily looking for the game play, but looking for the unsettling yet interesting feel of the game.

So happy you folks picked Inscryption as the top dog. Truly one of the best games I've ever played, and it still has me guessing while I approach endgame in act III. And card game wise, the most satisfying I've played since The Witcher's Thronebreaker.

So far, Death's Door is my GOTY, so it's nice to see it get a good slot here. My only problem with it was that the enemy mob rooms started to get to be too much and felt like padding, but everything else is perfect.

Both my indie and overall game of the year for 2021 was the fabulous Death’s Door. So good that I bought and beat it on PS5 and Switch, and as someone who isn’t particularly bothered about trophies, I even summoned the patience for that 'umbrella run' for the platinum trophy. What a game!

Nice rank man!. For me, Ender Lilies is my favourite indie of 2021, very gorgeous game!. The top 2 and 3 it's complete with Death's Door and Loop Hero. Very nice year for the indie scene i think.

I never really payed attention to Indie games. Then I saw a video for Inscryption. I watch it for a bit then turned it off. But I soon found I could not stop thinking of it. I watched the rest, and it blew me away. Took some time, but I eventually picked it up. It was every bit as amazing as the videos made it out to be.

Thanks for the list. Lot of games I really need to check out myself. Just need to mention Hoa, a magical little game, I that enjoyed a lot this year. It has some flaws, is very short and is very easy, but artstyle and music made for a wonderful and memorable experience.

Wildermyth is my number 1 this year. I love creating the characters i love in it. Sable also comes close, but it’s a bit disturbingly buggy and i am not sure about the developers trying to repair these bugs. 😔

Voidigo looks great, never heard of it before, is it rogue-lite or rouge-like? Because I'm so bad at rouge-likes so I prefer lites where you can upgrade your character to make the game easier for yourself.

My Top 3 are Kena: Bridge of Spirits, Death's Door and Ultra Age! This year was an amazing year for me in terms of Action Adventure thanks to these three games, as well as Ys IX: Monstrum Nox and Metroid Dread. I wanna squeeze in Record of Lodoss War: Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth next week to wrap everything up!

I played a lot of indie games through Game Pass in 2021. Not on your list, I can vouch for Olija and Omno as being among my favorites. Omno is a charming, clever 3D exploration puzzler with no combat/killing and Olija is an action-adventure game that evokes old Apple II/C64/MS-DOS titles with more modern action gameplay. Both are intuitive to play, not overly challenging (cough, Death's door, Kena, cough), and require very little exposition to present their worlds. Just a brisk, enjoyable playthrough without any pacing problems.

Dang I played 1, 2, 6 and 7 myself and Death's Door was definitely still my #1, I went through it 100% twice (umbrella the second time). Gotta give shout outs to KeyWe and Mini Motorways this year and I've personally just picked up Behind The Frame and Blind Drive in the steam sale which I'll try out before the year's out at least before I settle on the top 10 proper

Chicory is really really good. I watched the whole thing over on Playframe. It's not really the kind of game i would ever enjoy playing myself, but the story is really good, and the tech is very impressing.

Chicory on the Switch (if you have access to one) would be my place to play it. The painting implementation of the touch controls is wonderful.

Wow, really surprised Death’s Door, but not at all unhappy about what took its place. Inscryption was definitely one of my favourites of the year, but I was personally more struck by the more downtempo games like Chicory, Sable and Unpacking.
