Nier and the Ys games stand out to me. Again on behalf of the wife and I Erick thank you for wanting to tackle this project. Has been far far more fun then we thought it would be when you first announced this project.

Glad you mentioned White Knight Chronicles in that list, Erick! Such an underrated game that while it has its own issues, it's still a fun game. Its direct sequel is also great IMO. Now that you mention it, I still haven't beaten Ys Seven yet. I'll double dip with Ys Memories of Celceta on my Vita then :P (hopefully the latter will pop up in the best of 2013 video). I'm so late in watching your Best of the year series, but I'll keep myself occupied until the next one comes out. Maybe I'll find some hidden gems there that I own and haven't touched yet. yeah I'm not doing any more predictions list because my role playing detection kind of falls off after about 2008. however, I am super happy that Final Fantasy XIII did not get onto the 2010 list!

This has been a fun journey through JRPG history. I wonder what a worst of each year would look like? Ys Oath in Felghana - The music, the gameplay, the adventure you're on is just fantastic. They did a really good job of recreating the third title and I'm glad they spent the time doing so. Sakura Wars - I had no idea that this game was the last JRPG on PS2. That doesn't seem to be a bad way to go out. I know with the new game they changed the battle to action (which seems like what games do now) but I am looking forward to trying to finish this game. man i cant find it but the original reveal of white knight cronicles looked so dope. they had this system where you could combo allies abilites into eachother to get unique effects like Grandia 3, that game would have been so much better than the watered down mmo it turned into.

2010. The game that sticks out most in my memory from that year is a DS game: Infinite Space. I remember it had a bit of a slow start that almost had me looking elsewhere, but before too long it had me hooked. Really glad I stuck with it. In western RPGs, 2010 saw the release of my favorite Fallout game - Fallout: New Vegas (sorry Fallout 2!).

Nice to see a Falcom game finally make the list. Also, great to see White Knight Chronicles make the list- so underappreciated.

Hey man great work, you often talk that one version of a game is the best to play of all, here's an idea, maybe do a video about a series say final fantasy, dragon quest or shin megami tensei and say which is the best version/console in you opinion for the entire series, for example ff1 and 2 ps1, 3 and 4 ds, etc so on

No doubt about number 1, one of my all time favorites. And you and I share similar stories about starting the Ys series with 7. Add to it Sakura wars and strange journey and this is a pretty awesome list

Yes! I mentioned White Knight Chronicles and Dragon Quest IX, glad they featured here. Not the strongest, but great titles nonetheless. I personally would have also included Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep, Tales of Graces f and Resonance of Fate, but it's your list and I honestly think there was a lot to choose from that year. Also, understandable that Final Fantasy XIII wasn't here, but I did enjoy the sequel and the soundtrack is outstanding; it's a hidden gem to me at least. Looking forward to the next one! 😄

Infinite Space would definitely be near the top of my 2010 top 10. One of the things I dislike about many RPGs is how common it is for the party to have access to a combat capable ship but there is no ship battle gameplay with the ships only fighting in cutscenes. Infinte Space where almost all combat is ship to ship or small fleet actions was a very nice change of pace IMO as are games like Skies of Arcadia and Nostalgia where both ship and party battles occur often and are playable.

Even though I'm a Fan of Johnny Yong Bosch and Laura Bailey, I wish the previous Sakura Wars games were brought to the US and that you can choose between the English and Japanese voice overs in Sakura 5.

Nier really was (is) magical. If you described it to me before taking a chance on it I would have wrote it off. Bought it on a whim on launch and instantly fell in love. I never played this Star Ocean, been tempted since the international release... this list tempts me again.

A bunch of good games in these list (ys is always great), but even considering north america releases, was Pier Solar considered? This year was of the mega drive release, i dont remember when it was released for other sistems.

Ah, Ys Oath in Falghana. Absolutely amazing. Nightmare Catastrophe really kicked in my teeth. 10/10 would get my teeth kicked in again Jokes aside I dont actually reccomend doing that unless you're as crazy as I am. I'd suggest that if you're skilled, picking either nightmare or catastrophe and going a step down on the other. Doing both at once is hella hard and not for the faint of heart Edit: I mixed up memories with Ark of Napishtim. Felghana doesn't have a catastrophe difficulty. I did do Felghana on Nightmare though. Amazing and more balanced than Napishtim on Nightmare Catastrophe.

I can't for the life of me understand why Star Ocean: The Last Hope was so underappreciated.

Felgana is a great experience, I played without expecting nothing extraordinary, but the music and bosses were amazing, great list and someday I should try Nier.

And let's not forget that Yakuza 4 came out in 2010. An amazing RPG from a series that is one of the best RPG series of the last 15 years or so.

Next year also has an undisputed champion. I'll be shocked to find any game but Radiant Historia at the top next time.

A great year for me with FF13, Resonance of Fate and Star Ocean. I really what to play SMT Strange Journey too.

A well deserved first place for Nier. I never played such a unique game. Nier Automata was also very good, but the first Nier was a very special experience, which I will never forget.

Yoko Taro and Hidetaka Miyazaki saved this decade of gaming for me.

Mmm.. Yeah! Love me some Nier. Soooooo many sweet sweet memories of one of my favoritest, grandest action RPGs ever! Also, I tried Y's Oath of Felghana on the Vita several years ago & found it very compelling but quit halfway through at the ice dungeon because of how extremely frustrating it got!! :( Also, PS2 had a lot of bangers in its 10 year run, huh?

Absolutely agree on Ys7. I've heard a lot of fans didn't like it that much, but I consider it outstanding precisely because of the party mechanics and because the story felt so much... bigger. And what can I say. Nier was way too good. Absolute clear and well deserved winner. I actually prefer this Nier to Automata (though Automata is also fantastic).

For me: White Knight Chronicles > Dragon Quest 9 > Arc Rise Fantasia DQ9 was a major step backwards for the series, but still an okay game. The Ys series is in my backlog, but I'd like to see a localized remake of 5 before I start.

I wouldn’t say Arc Rise Fantasia is a clone of Tales of, it’s more of a Spin off of the Luminous Arc series

Only ever played three games out of this year's list. Nier deserves number one. Or maybe not, because I'm still not completely convinced that this game is actually a rpg and not an action-adventure. Definitely one of the best games I've ever played though. Not to forget about Star Ocean 4. It's very fun to play. Those who dislike certain characters should definitely play this game with the original japanese voices. It's so much more natural. Not that the english dub is bad but the translation is. Especially since there are cases where japanese speech patterns cannot be translated at all. Trying to do this results in it sounding strange.

I really wanted to like Sakura Wars V more, but couldn't get attached to any of the heroines other than Gemini and the final chapter's battles just outright dragged.

My boy, Nier! I hope Replicant has the ability to swap between Papa Nier and Boyband Nier. I appreciate Papa Nier more though I hear the other Nier is canon.

I own some of these but....I've never actually played any of them.....except for Nier. Thought it was going to be a blank list for me, lol. Which I played two years ago in preparation to play Nier Automata. Very much felt like a down year this time.

Luckily, the voice acting can be turned off in Arc Rise Fantasia.

Going forward, I'll probably skip PS3 and 360 games that haven't been remastered, since many are still available on their respective digital store fronts Dragon Quest IX hasn't been rereleased in any form. It really need to be, though Strange Journey got a remaster for Nintendo 3DS Arc Rise Fantastia also hasn't been rereleased. The game really needs a remaster, it's great! Ys: Oath in Felghana is also playable on Vita, as is available on Steam Hexyz Force is also playable on Vita, which would be my recommended method since physical copies aren't cheap Sakura Wars: So Long My Love hasn't been rereleased either. SEGA, please bring the Sakura Wars games to modern platforms Star Ocean The Last Hope is available digitally for PS4 and Steam with 4K and Full HD support, and the 360 original is backwards compatible with XBOX ONE Ys Seven is compatible with Vita, and also available on PC It isn't available at the time of writing, but later this year, NieR will be getting an in-depth remaster for PS4 and XBOX ONE

Actually liked Final Fantasy 13 way better than White Knight Chronicles and yes,even Neir,which I thought was just too disjointed for it's own good. Just like Drakenguard it had good ideas and clunky gameplay. Spent 150 hours getting the platinum for FF 13 and liked it when it was touched up for the Xbox One X. Great music in the game and even though the story has issues in the later games it was no worse than FF 7's story here. A remaster would be interesting although the XBox X version was upscaled to 4k so it came close.

Star ocean the last hope is way better than people give it credit for. Best battle system and post game of all the series. The story is really good but predictable. The English voice acting tho..... lol I can agree with the negative comments in that regard

No Final Fantasy XIII? It was easily the best game of the year! It's tied for my favourite JRPG of all time with FF7 and Earthbound. It's popular to hate it and most people are such npcs they just follow the crowd on everything, it's sad really...

Wow. Finally a year when I have I completed NONE of the games. Even more pile of shame candidates but is it just me or is this a rather weak year in terms of those kind of classic life-changing games? Not just more games to enjoy if you already like RPGs, but the kind that can convert you to the genre, as FFVII did for a lot of fans or Shining Force I/II did for me. Nonetheless, Dragon Quest IX, Nier and both Ys games are all on my pile of shame bucket list.
