Shelley Duvall should have been nominated for the Oscar best supporting actress for The Shining.

Even Steven was peeved by it (which I do understand his character was reworked a lot), but I hate how they say she was weak and annoying, when really, she was a scared wife to actually fought her husband, who was going to harm her and her child. I’m more upset for the black guy who was killed off, despite he shouldn’t have been. The film I needed maybe another character or two to fill out deaths. But I definitely get why not.

The reason her nomination infuriates me is that Kubrick tortured her to get that performance out of her. That was the performance the Razzies deemed bad, the one Kubrick tortured a woman for until he thought it was good acting.

The Duvall nomination is so ridiculous, putting aside what happened off screen I think her performance is incredible - vulnerable, so natural and by the end so devastating - the movie would not work without her, and I would actually nominate her for an Oscar, it’s that good and memorable. I think nowadays, with the recent art house wave of horror which prioritizes tension and mood, we’re probably more primed and ready for this kind of movie and performance. I would love a return to this kind of naturalistic performer from the 70’s, she’s a unique talent.

Finally someone who shares my disgust in the Razzies. That “film award” was created, by the creator’s own words, to humiliate filmmakers. Yes, a lot of them have massive budgets and are just doing it for money, but that doesn’t mean they didn’t put their all. And penalizing the actors are just mean spirited. Jennifer Lawrence in Mother! is one of my favorite performances by her and was one of my favorites the year it came out. Without her, this strange and bizarre would've lost a big point of connection, and the end, you really want everyone who harmed her to suffer. She does that through the growth of her character's suffering and how well she shows the break down of her strength. Also, yes to DeVito, too. His Penguin is one of the best villains the series has seen.

@PeterRabbit4Eva Isabelle Adjani was incredible in "Possession". One of my favourite performances ever. But I am not sure what your point is. Sure, a lot of contemporary filmmakers, including Aronofsky with mother!, or Del Toro, drew inspiration from "Possession" and from Adjani's character, alright. The really impressive thing about JLaw's performance though (to me, who is not her fan) is that, IMHO, she had a very difficult task of subtly (and less subtly) changing the audience's perspective(s) all throughout the movie, while at the same time progressively becoming Mother Earth right in front of our eyes. It was an astonishing performance, showing how much she had grown as an actress. Also, @ABCEggplant never suggested JLaw was "the" real deal, as opposed to a whole century of cinematic history 😅 As for me, I simply agree with the fact that Lawrence's performance was one of the best *that year* among the contenders for awards. And certainly one of her own best performances. I for one think it's a shame she had to take a hiatus after all that criticism. I suppose it was not the only reason why, but still... I love Kubrick movies, but I can never defend the way he treated Shelley Duvall. I know she has declined physically and mentally with age, so maybe she’s trying to be nice to say things weren’t so bad on the set. But, even the behind-the-scenes video on the movie shows a woman who doesn’t seem to be treated very well. Her performance of a mother trying desperately to save her son while fighting visions which could make anyone feel like they’re losing their mind was one of the best of the year. I’d rather she be nominated for nothing and have that just be another job for her than have her up for a Razzie. Completely tasteless on their part.

I remember hearing a story how in the scene where the older black character is walking down the hallway and eventually gets killed that Kubrick made him do over 70 takes. I guess the actor eventually broke down crying and said "what do you want from me Mr.Kubrick?" and Jack encouraged him to finally move on. @@stephengrigg5988 I feel like Kubrick was on the spectrum, and was also a perfectionist, so every movie he made had countless takes; sometimes he'd discard a day's work because it didn't live up to his expectations. #7 The problem with Whitney Houston in The Bodyguard is that her character is poorly written: when she's not being this diva complaining how strict and paranoid Costner's character is acting, she's throwing herself at him, and we barely see any layers in the character besides that. Having said that, considering that it was her first film role and that was what she had to work with, Houston actually gives a good performance: she brings presence, charisma and allure to her character while escaping the pithole of coming across as a fictionalized performance of herself. #5 The problem with Dunaway's performance is that it's not in tune with what the movie ended up being. In her head, she was making a serious drama and channelling Joan Crawford while director Frank Perry (Katy's uncle btw) and the producers ended up u-turning into a more soap-opera-ish work, which made Faye's performance more laughable. Maybe that's why Faye Dunaway has always been embarassed by this performance and never embraced the camp-ness of it. (Also, as a terrible person as she might have been, Joan Crawford's work and impact on entertainment does not deserved to be solely known through Mommie Dearest).

I thought Whitney's character in the bodyguard was complex as written. A complicated and determined diva who feels suffocated by Costner's character and eventually learns to understand why his work is necessary. I didn't get the feeling that she threw herself at him. Their relationship blossomed organically and fizzled when they knew their two worlds didn't mix. It's unfair to blame actors whenever there's an issue with the writing, and a lot of that ends up being subjective.

It's all designed to be for the entertainment value, and they have, at times been very entertaining, particularly when someone like Halle Berry shows up to pick up her award. Obviously it would be easier for them to select performances from bad horror flicks that go largely unseen but they want to create a bit of controversy by picking more high profile films.

Kubrick emotionally tortured Shelly, she was pushed to the brink, having a Guinness record for the most amount of takes. You can see in the behind the scenes videos how tense it was for her and that she’s terrified to go to set but is trying to put on a brave face. Everything Shelly Duvall is feeling at this time is also what her character is feeling, so anyone saying that her acting is bad just flat out is unable to interpret human emotion, arguably Shelly Duvall isn’t even acting in these scenes, it’s genuine emotion.

I need to throw in Aileen Quinn who was cruelly (and undeservingly) given the Worst Supporting Actress award in 1983. Say want you want about the movie (I think it's mostly wonderful, I don't care who knows it), Quinn gives a winning performance as Annie. Also, she's a child. She's an actual child who is the lead (not supporting) of a huge movie musical, not just any huge movie musical but the movie of the then most popular musical around-- the pressure she must have been under... and again, she's a child. I know people had issues with Carol Burnett's performance, fine, nominate her, she's a huge star, a legend, a pro, and an adult-- she could take it. Quinn was the only actor nominated from the movie, and she did a great job. F*ck off, Razzies. (She was also nominated for Worst New Star -- I don't know which is worse, nominating her lead performance as a worst "supporting performance", or nominating a newcomer child actor as "worst new star"). Not to mention that when you do a movie with kids in major acting roles, it is the very big responsibility of the *director* to cast and direct that kid actor to the performance you need, and to have an editor who can build it with you if the kid can't give you what you hoped for. It isn't the kid's fault. I would say the same for nominating Tami Erin as Pippi Longstocking, though she wasn't as young and the movie wasn't as big a pressure cooker.

It’s absolutely criminal that Sandra Bullock was nominated for Demolition Man. She was so much fun in that movie. Also, Tom Cruise was fine in War of the Worlds, but the performance from that film I would have nominated was Dakota Fanning. Yes, I know she was doing her best to portray a scared child, but that incessant screaming was too much. I didn’t enjoy the film because of it and left the theater annoyed.

I understand your confusion re Shelly Duvall's Razzie nomination. While the Shining and her performance in particular have gained critical favor during the years since its release, they weren't widely praised when the movie first came out. Duvall's performance was met with criticism primarily because the Wendy character as presented in the movie was a complete 180 from Wendy's portrayal in the book. In the book she is much stronger and more determined to save herself and her son. She exhibits courage and quick thinking while under a huge amount of stress as Jack threatens her and Danny's lives. Kubrick's Wendy is the complete opposite: meek, frail, timid and terrified. She does what she needs to do to survive, but the whole time she does it she's sniveling, screaming, hyperventilating and basically looking like she could drop dead of a heart attack at any moment. This combined with some other choices Kubrick made that differed from the book contributed to the movie's reception being so polarized. But like you said, it's a great performance and a great movie. As time has passed it's judged on its own merits, not on how it compares to the source material.

Great list to think about! Harvey is almost always great. Agree. Quentin, though has made me cringe at times assuming he should be in films but doesn’t quite work… is fine in Dusk til Dawn. Creepy both before and after. Realistic. Mila - Sometimes annoying but I chalk that up to material; wtf can somebody DO with that sort of movie but have fun? It’s lunacy, almost ungradable. Not her fault, or performance, it’s the terrain. Arnold is just fair, not bad enough for a “razzie”… but holy jesus did he fit the comic-book art for Conan. Would have loved to see a more serious attempt at the film, such as maybe directed by Boorman, Peckinpah or Walter Hill. Darker, harder, a few gorgeous shots suggesting a time we can’t find anymore. More realistic. Arnold’s face partially hidden more often, and story telling with more dread, wonder and longing. It could have been really something special. I don’t mind the direction but the old comic book art really gave me daydreams that made a better movie- not Arnold’s fault. Ben Stiller- what else did they expect? He was perfect. Didn’t see Madonna… but wasn’t that sort of a documentary? LOL Cruz- fine. Agreed unfair. Lowe- same. Lane is always believable, and underrated at times. Cotton club had other problems and she’s not one of them. Tripplehorn, yeah at times maybe I could “see” her acting but not worth a razzie. Jesus. Gertz- simply looked like she wanted to be somewhere else, the part screamed “hate me”…. again not worth a razzie.

I was disappointed by the film setting audiences up to have Rashomon-like multiple viewpoints, only to chicken out and decide that there could be no ambiguity when it came to an event like that portrayed in the film. I suppose that shouldn't be a surprise, having been co-written and co-starring actors who'd both been publicly accused of wrongdoing in relation to Harvey Weinstein and thus wanted to distance themselves from his crimes, but why should audiences suffer for their sins?

This video was hilarious and true. You made me remember a phenomenon I’ll never understand however… how we’re never prepared for when any human can’t find the line between “liking somebody” and “good work deserving accolades”. I’ve gone round and round for decades about that and had immense frustrations with acquaintances who just refuse to step back and understand what they’re doing. Even your Sandra Bullock being a fave; I think she’s good, but hundreds of actresses are that good. As a person she’s fascinating and has a very memorable look, and had tough things happen socially and that “strong woman” result that goes really far (though very few truly know what it’s like to live with her… all of us have been surprised before). But NONE of that should have any part in deciding if she’s my favorite actress LOL! If she does a good job, or bad job, that’s that. For Demolition Man, it pretty much fit exactly what the story called for. A+ I love that you expose the razzies doing far worse about just not liking somebody and tossing a razzie at them. Every example here is accurate.

I'm not sure when or how the opinion began to change, but of course it has and "The Shinning" has appeared on every respected best films of all time list for decades. I totally agree with your assessment of Jennifer Lawrence in Mother! That was my choice for the top performance of ANY actor in 2017 (Mother! was my favorite film of the year, too--it's an exhausting work, so I have only revisited it twice, but I can honestly say I have never seen anything like it). The film's MVP is obviously Lawrence whose reactions to the madness going on around her are always authentic, jarring, moving...That moment where the kitchen sink crashes and she loses her cool, insisting that everyone GET OUT of her house. I'll never, ever forget it--and I'll never forget my only big screen viewing of it. It was a small audience, and I'm pretty sure everyone was stunned by it, cause a middle-aged black man up near the screen got up when the credits finished, and declared to his fellow audience members: "I'm gonna have to go home and think about that one for a while." Believe me everyone left in that room had a big boisterous laugh at that comment.

Agreed on the #1. I loathed Mother but both Jennifer Lawrence & Michelle Pfeiffer were highlights in the movie. Faye Dunaway committed 100% to Mommie Dearest, a testament as to why that performance has stood the test of time in camp for both the right and wrong reasons. Whitney was adequate in The Bodyguard, along with Waiting To Exhale and The Preacher's Wife. While not one of the best pop diva turned actresses, she would firmly be placed somewhere in the middle. Shelley Duvall & Danny Devito also had no business being nominated in the first place as well. Agreed with Cher in Burlesque, she's perfectly fine in the movie. I always think they always did way too much with female singers turned actresses, and even when they weren't "acting". See Britney Spears' random win for Worst Supporting Actress in Fahrenheit 9/11 ( and she wasn't even that bad in Crossroads either) or Madonna's Worst Actress nomination in the Truth Or Dare Documentary. I have to admit I had bought that book at the time. One of Burt's movies was in the book, "At Long Last Love." Burt was saying to Harry that people don't make a bad movie on purpose they really do want it to succeed. Burt said it better than I and when he did the tension in the audience was very heavy. I was surprised to hear about some of the actors that were given Razzies. Like you said so many things have to come together to make a good movie. The director really has to pull in a bad performance and if they don't have the backing of the producer to keep an actor in check, I guess you just hope for the best.
