All these years later and I still think Anita kind of had a point in ‘A boy like that’ 😅 She was my favourite character in the movie, as her actions were the most understandable/realistic to me.

Trinity Gilreath yeah he killed her brother and she just forgave him because of “love”, even though she barely knew him. Literally, they have known each other for no more than a few days.

It’s still connects to the Shakespeare story in that Tony loses someone to a relative of Maria (Bernardo being her brother instead of a cousin like Tybalt to Juliet) and then killing that relative in anger like Romeo’s killing of Tybalt in ‘Romeo and Juliet’

Let's not forget that Bernardo killed Riff. So, of course, Anita is right about Tony, but she doesn't mention Bernardo being a murderer too (maybe she didn't know or she didn't want to admit it but anyway)

While everyone I knew wanted to be Maria, I always fancied myself to be an Anita! She did have a valid point as to how Maria could still forgive Tony so quickly after he'd just killed her brother.

In Romeo and Juliet it was about 2 or 3 days, in WSS it was literally one night to the next! About 24 hours!

"Maria! I just met a girl named Maria! "West Side Story" was the first musical I fell in love with. I initially watched it when my class was studying "Romeo and Juliet", and our teacher wanted to draw some parallels between both versions. Needless to say, it soon became my top musical of all time. Love Natalie Wood and Rita Moreno!

Love this musical. Natalie Wood was so pretty, George Chakaris was so charasmatic as Bernardo, but Rita Moreno owned every scene she was in. For me she took it from a really good film to a masterpiece.

Being born in Manhattan and growing up there, West Side Story is my favorite film and musical of all time. In fact my wife looked like Natalie Wood, my favorite actress. So, I have my own opinion of my top 10. For me this is a love story and Tonight has to be number 1 followed by Maria. These two songs are classics. Rounding out my top 5 is three more classics, America, I Feel Pretty and Somewhere. The next five I have the Jet Song, Something's Coming, Gee Officer Krumpke, A Boy Like That and the Prologue. The last one was the hardest since I love Cool and Tonight Quintet. But this was the opening of the musical and movie.

Back in the 90's I was on the Board for a tutorial program in Marin County, CA. I was the only person of color and one of three working class members on the board. One of our trust fund members was expressing her concern that the boys might be members of a gang. I told her not to worry, none of the guys can dance. I don't think she got it.

I agree with "America" but personally feel the "Tonight Quintet" is a very close second. It's a masterpiece of music. Of course, there is so much awesome music it's difficult to put them in a best to worst order.

As a high school dance teacher I have taught the four dance sequences from West side story for years. I understand your choices but Cool and the Prologue are leaving out two of the four dance pieces. Jerome Robbins won a special academy award for dance for west side story. I enjoy officer Krupke but I think it could’ve been on the honorable mention list. Such a great musical I think all of the music should be in the top 10.

Having grown up in Miami, this piece touched all of us while we were working our way through our own adolescence. Combine that with this show piece touched ALL the points of conflict our generation was experiencing in real life. The fact this barely preceded the Cuban cultural mix that was about to happen all while civil rights movement was emerging brought all our adolescent emotions spilling out in the open socially , kind of setting us up for Viet Nam, school protesting, forcing everyone to revisit all our personhood questions, who am I, why Am I here, what is my destiny, what is love, and what role does this life model play in my life now and in my immediate future in my individual maturity all this giving us mixed messages about our proper place in God's World, What exactly are our choices and how do they inform our responsibility to our world and each other.

I don’t know how Spielberg can improve on the movie. Certainly, he can bring the vocabulary current, but he cannot improve on the choreography and the cinematography throughout the movie.

You can be sure in Spielberg's new version Maria and Tony's singing will NOT be dubbed. Sadly this movie has been delayed into 2021 because of COVID.

This was the first musical that I sat through, and completely enjoyed. As a 13 year old I would normally had more "pressing" issues at hand. Like watching Terminator 2 for 80th time this week. lol But yeah. I feel in live with movie.

I don’t consider it perfection unless *everything* can be performed as written and without alteration as the creators intended. Ergo, the movie could be redone to better fit the creators’ ideas and since Sondheim is still alive we have a good chance at seeing what the stage production gave life to the film making the new film even better than the original.

I recall reading "1000 Films to See Before You Die" of which this film was one, that the filmmakers wanted Elvis Presley to play Tony but Col. Tom Parker wouldn't let him out of his contract. I haven't seen this film in a long time, but I'm looking forward to the remake later this year.

If you guys ever get a chance, see this shit on the big screen. It’s amazing. Speaking of which, the best part of the film in the big screen to me was only No. 9. That dance is great to watch

Tbh, a boy like that should’ve been higher. Especially because of Anita’s part. She literally went from hating Tony and depressed about Bernardo’s death to moved by Maria’s words about her love, reminding her about Bernardo.
