Much like 2020 I don't think this year was that great for games, but I managed to find 10 that were worth talking highly about! As for the others, you can find out my thoughts on those at the end of the video!

Just to make it clear - YES, I'm aware that one of my metaphors for a game on this list is the same as the one Vasel said on his list - I'd watched their video shortly beforehand and while ad libbing it was the first thing that came to mind! Not intentional, but goes to show how similarly we agree on some games! All credit to Tom!!

Thanks! The recap helped a bit for games that I haven't done full reviews on. Wouldn't work for any list but I think when it comes to Best of Year, it's worth doing.

Nice list! I've only played 4 of them, but really want to play Ark Nova & happy to try the others. Sleeping Gods, Roll Player Adventures & Cascadia are all near the top of my best 2021 games list too. I won't be making my video until January because I have 5 more 2021 games on my desk waiting to be played in the next 2 weeks. Happy Holidays!

Great list! So far my top 3 games are Furnace, Imperium Legends/Classics & No. 1 (by a wide margin) Hadrian's Wall. Possible usurpers being Ark Nova (about to hit the table today) & Golem!

Just got Cascadia and played once or twice and love it. Looking forward to unraveling the solo and want to play this again with Becky quite soon. I do feel like it possesses that 'zen-like' feel akin to PARKS or possibly even Wingspan. I saw Golem at BGG Con and never really felt compelled to try and play. Maybe one day if someone brings it over. Ark Nova, while I have only pre-ordered and not played, I watched for a good bit while the Game Brain folks played at the con. I got to see a bit of Paul's video of the solo this morning and look forward to watching that in greater depth this week. I very much agree that Ark Nova stands a great chance of being game of the year. If Stoganov counts as a 2021 game (I can't remember) I think it will be in my top 10 down the road...we shall see.

Even if I don't always agree with your views, I always appreciate your honesty. Ark Nova and Sleeping Gods are in my sights now. Both look fantastic. And you should try and get Hadrian's Wall played if you can. It's up there with Fleet The Dice Game as one of my favourite roll/flip and writes. The player sheets look insanely intimidating, but it's really not as complex as it seems and those chains are very satisfying once you get going. Love your channel.

Interesting take on some of those hyped games. Im really surprised that so many people really love Destinies.. it didnt trigger any excitement for me at all but i will love to try Ark Nova, looks really fun🤞🏻

Yeah I think that got artificially hyped by the Kickstarter youtube channels that can't shed an opinion on anything or automatically love every expensive KS - the same ones who think the new Zombicide Marvel will be a good game just because they got given a giant statue model.

I will go out on a limb here and say it 'could' be your Number 2 game Hadrians Wall - its like Ark Nova - once you've played it, you just want to keep playing it again and again. I'm saying this as someone who has got bored of Roll n Writes - but this just feels massively different. I would say though, you realise how 'samey' it could be 10 games in, so you try different paths. Its not one to stay in the collection forever but I think you'll be impressed with it.

Odd I think this has been a pretty strong year overall and everyone in my game group agrees but we definitely have different tastes in games.

So many games that didn't get a seal of endorsement and even then barely any with a distinction seal, it felt like a year of repetition.

Games that didn't get a seal from Luke doesn't mean they aren't good games. Luke has a very specific taste as many of as. For example you said terraforming mars ares was mediocre. I think it's brilliant. You didn't liked wonderful world. You like heavy euro from what I have seen. For example my brothers didn't like pret a porter. So these years are not good for him but for many of us these are good years. Cheers!

Luke it seems like you say every year wasn’t the best year. Can you explain what was a good year in comparison? I think there were some really awesome games released this year.

The last few years I think have suffered. Gaming peaked about 2016 and hasn't quite lived up to prior years. 2012, 2013 and 2015 were really solid also.

@@TheBrokenMeeple Hey 2021 gave us Roll Player Adventures, Cascadia, Unsettled, Imperium Legends and Classic, the Hunger, Ankh, Lizard Wizard, Red Rising, Corrosion, Unfathomable, Witchstone, Final Girl, Illumination, Veilwraith, Paleo, Regicide, Brew, Whistle Mountain, Juicy Fruits, The Loop, Dinosaur World, Meadow, So Clover, Meadow, Tortuga 2199 in the US, Lions of Lydia, Hadrian's Wall. Ausonia and Excavation Earth just to name a few. I think the last few years have all had solid releases, perhaps you are too close to it all? Not all those games are GOATS, but many of them were solid and a lot of fun and there is a ton of new ones I missed as well.

I will take Luke’s side here. That is a list of mostly good games (something for everyone), really NOT a list of what should be GOTY contenders in a strong year. Still nice of you to put that list together.

I did a bit of research and it looks like Arcane Wonders was selling only a few early English copies at Essen Spiel this year. Either way... looking forward to it! I'm sure they are being produced now for release in the states.

Hi Luke, enjoyed this top 10. I have not played any 2021 games yet! At the UK expo I picked up Kanban EV and ANNO 1800 and a couple of older games. I have a question for you we hated 7th continent so would you say we should avoid sleeping gods and / or Rollplayer adventures as they sound somewhat similar?

@@TheBrokenMeeple ok to be honest we give it a good try played it for days the first scenario. We didn't get anywhere, didn't complete it and didn't find it that interesting. We played it 2 player I admit so more people would increase the experience I am sure. We rarely play co-op in general but we enjoyed Lord of the rings card game and Jaws of the Lion more than 7th continent. We really enjoy games like Kanban EV & our current game we are delving into is Ark Nova.

Hey Luke, any thoughts on Dominant Species Marine when it comes to randomness? Thinking about trading in the old version but from what I've seen the game has some crazy random event cards that adds a huge amount of luck/random punishment to the game, is this true?

There are events that can punish or gain well and because of the way they enter play, there is an element of luck there, but I think a house rule can solve that which I'm looking into.

Mortum sounds cool, hadn't heard of that one before. My game of the year is probably The Initiative. Whole family loved it and it was so clever.

Yeah I mentioned it I think after my list was done. It's OK but only really works for me at 3 player. The co-op is impossible, 4P is way too long and the rulebook was shoddy at best. Bit of a disappointment.

I watched Michael Wibners playthrough of Ark Nova a couple months ago and it was an instant preorder for me when the preorder of it became available in the States. As far as new games go definitely the game I have been most excited for.

You should definitely try Hadrian's Wall. It's such a thinky game, more like a puzzle. Do I need workers or slaves or building blocks? And what do I do first? Fortify my wall or build a bath to help me later? It's so enjoyable. From your list I want to get Sleeping Gods. But it's so big and so expensive and my husband already complains about the money I've spent on games this year. 🙂 Merry Christmas to you and see you next year.

I never thought of the worker placement of Dominant Species as programming. It's just worker placement. The resolution of migration actions caused the most analysis paralysis in my group. Marine is definitely shorter in my experience. There is less time to prepare for events in Marine which felt worse like you said.

I agree. It took me a while to realize what he meant by programming. The idea of placing all workers before beginning to resolve them is a pretty common one (Crystal Palace, Francis Drake, Coimbra, Crisis, Carson City, Bus, etc.). As it allows you to see what others are selecting between your own worker placement and adjust your plans, I think "programming" is simply a mis-labeling. Programming is determining several actions ahead of time without knowledge of what others are doing (e.g. Lord of Xidit, Robo Rally)

Still a good year for dry euro fans. We got Golem, Corrosion, Boonlake, Messina 1347, Origins First Builders, Tabannusi, etc. I have no complaints.

It's funny, i was watching another "top 2021 games" video and was thinking "man, no interesting games on this list" so I did a search to see what other channels came up with and found this video! 100% agree - not a great year for games. I think I ended up with Kemet Blood and Sand and After the Empire. Cascadia is overwhelmingly on on people's lists. It's a fine game but very light. Funny this one seems like the pinnacle for games for 2021.

I would do 20 if I wanted to shout out loud about those games. But if I'm doing 11-20 I'm choosing games that barely got 7/10's - they don't feel like ones I would jump up and down about.

With you on Imperium and Cascadia, sadly Golem is not available in the US yet. I owned Sleeping Gods and go rid of it as it sat on the shelf untouched. I can always pick it up again one day, but for now I moved on. Roll Player Adventures is on the shelf ready to play. Did you do it multiplayer or solo? Ark Nova I definitely want to play!

Haven't been interested in Ark Nova at first, but after all your praise I became curious. My favourites were 1923 Cotton Club, Kombo Klash, Ruination, Twisted Fables and Burgle Bros 2. Edit: I know you hate game with a date in it, but I found it quite enjoyable :D

Yesss. I think Cascadia is in my top 3 of 2021. Everyone I've taught it to has enjoyed it, and every game has ended within ~5 points or so between 1st and 2nd. And playing in under an hour is a bonus.

It's a solid game, but Top 5 would be pushing it. It's fully multiplayer solitaire so above 2 players I wouldn't feel like playing it. Great solo though.

I can’t wait to finally play Ark Nova. I played Bitoku and was mesmerized. Iconography was unnecessarily weird but otherwise it was a beautiful looking game with a lot of tension between players.

Yes, but I avoided that one. A game that requires you to have the exact same group playing it always to get the full benefit is far too restrictive.

Cascadia better than Calico? Yep, you got my thumbs up. :) I do think Calico is a bit more of a brain burner, but I agree it ends up also being more luck dependent. Cascadia has become my go-to game for those evenings when I’m tired and I just want to relax.

I totally agree! Calico just felt too random though on the tiles. So you only burn your brain because you're planning ahead for a tile that may never show.

2020 is for me probably the best year (above 2016 and 2012). I haven't played enough from 2021, gonna take me at least another year to have a top for it.

@@TheBrokenMeeple I have 14 games rated 8 or more from 2020. And that's not counting Kanban EV and 7 Wonders 2nd ed. Only one of them, Fort, has not entered my top 100. Even once the shininess of new games goes away a bit I still expect it to have some of my all time favorites. And I still need to play some top 100 contenders from that year. 17 and 18 weren't too bad, mainly it's the last two years. And honestly with the colossal amount of games released, it probably reached its peak early.

To each his own of course but for me your mentions at the end were all far better than your actual top ten, except for Cascadia. There are easily 25 very good games, though admittedly most are fairly lightweight.it wasn’t the best year ever for me but it was very good. So I watch a number of these top ten and it is clear that different people have different focus. For example...it's telling whether or not someone would consider "7 wonders" to be a "gateway" game or not :D....I find it to be a pretty good intro game myself, but I get that there is a bit more crunching than a lot of people might find enjoyable. I personally am not a huge fan because I find it to be a bit too simplistic and would rather have something with more meat...but that's just me... Regardless, there is one game that I've been impressed seems to be showing up quite a bit...never at number one, but typically right in the middle of everyone's lists...and that is Golem. Definitely one I'm going to have to keep an eye on. There are a lot of things that are high on some people's list, but nowhere to be found for other people, so there must be something about Golem that gives is a bit more broad appeal. Cascadia is another one that appears more often, but seems to be in the 8-10 range for a lot of people. I'm less interested in that because it doesn't seem like my kind of game, but another to keep an eye out for.

Yeah Cascadia is solid but it can't go above 8-10 I don't feel, there's only so much to it. Golem has downtime issues so it wouldn't climb the list further either.

Nice list! Maybe I’m a glutton for punishment but I really like Lorenzo and Barrage lol, I’ll definitely have to check out Golem now! If you had a choice, would you rather get Golem, Terramara, or Glass Road?

Sleeping Gods was actually 2020 game as it arrived in Australia before Xmas (though with quarantine and flight delays I didn’t actually get to open mine until just into 2021)

Plus that probably makes Ark Nova a 2022 game?! If the shipping crisis continues then top tens of the year are doomed - instead it will be top ten games I couldn’t get yet since the last one 😂

I barely ever agree with anything you say (to me Arc Nova is literally just Terraforming mars with all the best stuff removed and all the faults left in, also imperium has probably my favourite art of the year. I could go on but it's all just opinion an not super important really) It really makes your lists more interesting than people whose taste I share though and there's always something I hadn't considered that you shine a light on. In this case it's 7 Wonders Architects which I shall go and take a look at. cheers. Keep it up.🙂

Sooooo many good things Ark does better than TM. What best stuff is even left in TM that you say was removed bar the communal board which honestly plays out the same way every single game.

The communal board is easily the best bit of TM and doesn't play out the same in every game because it's dependent on card draw and starting faction. The weird communal end game is the other thing AN removes that's great and the HUGE flaw the they both have is that they're simple little card games at heart that inexplicably take hours to play. I like them both but the fuss over AN is exactly reminiscent of the fuss over TM and probably for the same reasons. They're both good games but definitely overrated - AC will go the way of TM in the long run. Sat on thousands of shelves not getting played because it's far to long for what it is. Also as I'm one of those who has a dusty copy of TM I won't be getting AN because it feels like an alternative mode of the same game.

Nice list but I still disagree with Calico/Cascadia :p From 2021 I got: Canvas, Agropolis and Micro Macro full house (also the new descent but did not like). Still it felt like a good year because I got Spirit Island and TMB and they both became top 3 games.

I sensed some bias and likely lack of actually playing more than a handful of times with the way he described Calico. Lots of people criticize games based on literally 2 or 3 plays.

I appreciate the honesty on games that didn't make the top ten. Not everything can be puppies & roses. Plus these games are not cheap, so good to be aware of some of the cons.

I can’t think of 10 new games of 2021 I’d put in a list possibly because I don’t own them and still catching up on 2020. Imperial Steam, Magnate 2021 games that look good but yet to play. Clash of Cultures Monumental Edition may not count? Still got Dune Imperium to play.

I'm playing Tabunussi next week, UK hasn't seen the game yet, but it looks like "another dry Euro", not seeing the USP. Anno was average. The theme is lost amidst a rinse repeat progression of grab a generic tile then upgrade to this generic tile and it drags its heels for ages doing the same thing. Imperial Steam...... You know me and investment style train games right? 🤣

Thank you for your opinion. It's definitely an interesting take. I was interesed in Maglev Metro, for instance, but I will take a second look at the game. I will check out Ark Nova for sure. I've missed that one entirely.

You are the only person I've seen who thought 2021 wasn't a stellar year for board games. Oddly, two of your top ten aren't even available: Mortum and Ark Nova. You really do have different tastes from the masses, or just missed out on some of the best games of the year.

The masses in terms of content creators I find have to like everything or are easily pleased! :P Honestly most games were pretty meh. I just played another one from the year - Shinkansen Zero Kei - again only above average.

@@TheBrokenMeeple OK you might have to try first to find out (mostly for just released games), but then I don't see it as a problem at all when a game is only good for a certain player count. I'm buying The Great Wall specifically for when we're 3 players.

I love Ark Nova and will for sure land on my table. As for roll player adventures... I dont feel to try roll player again. It was fine, but nothing worth playing again

I have watched your top 10 and quite a few other top tens and, with all the smallprint and disclaimers, I still feel a bit "cheated" by the inclusion of games that are not available. Maybe there should be a top for games that can be bought right now at retailers (in Europe, too, not just the US), and another top for games that you have previewed and want to make us excited about (Essen only, prototypes,digital versions, advance copies, KS). I admit, the one that got my interest from your list is also the most obscure: Mortum. I wrote to the publisher and they replied it should hit stores in 4 months or so. A good half of year after Essen. Not accounting delays and more shipping crisis. I'd like to see your review, but I also believe it doesnt belong on this list.

Tom brought this point up on his list. But with different countries and shipping issues etc it's physically impossible to create a list that satisfies all that criteria. Plus what happens when stock sells out and you have to wait for the reprint?

@@TheBrokenMeeple I have seen that video too and I think there are nuances to it. For example, you are still waiting for a physical copy of Ark Nova, I can get it straight away, but I cannot find, say, Furnace and Land vs. Sea. I still consider them 2021 releases, with some distribution issues. On the other hand, Vagrant Song, My father's work and Mortum are not 2021 releases (KS and advance copies for reviewers do not count) and should not be included.

I think once you have been gaming for a while you do get a feeling that lots of games that come out are just “OK”. Not bad games, but also not unique and fantastic.

It wouldn't be Top Ten but I'm also unsure of its year. It's essentially a nice looking reprint with mainly aesthetic changes so it's hard to tell if 2015 or 2021.
