"Tides of Time" is another great closed draft game (only 18-card deck). Like Brian Boru, "Claim" & "Claim 2" are another trick taking/card drafting blend. I consider it semi open/semi closed draft as there is one card on offer in each round and the two players will play high or low to a trick depending on whether they want to win the card on offer or not (high wins, low gets a blind deck draw). Luke, finally - oh boy - as I'm Irish, it's somewhat humourous to hear non-Irish botch the pronounciation of Boru - it's not "burrough" but "buh-rew" - try it, it's really not that difficult ! :) Glad to see you got your Facebook back - am interested to know that after it was "lost", how it was "found" without a rebuild of the old file (if that's the case).

Ohanami was one of the first card games I got getting into the hobby and was so impressed how simple yet fun it is. Another interesting drafting game is It's a Wonderful World. I personally have the 2 player version which does the beginning a I split you choose opening round, but I have played it with a draft, taking out the negative event cards, and it works great.

I reeeally like that mechanism because it enables simultaneous play which enables higher player counts with almost the same play time. I wish there were as many closed drafting games as there are worker placement games. That would be a brilliant choice. ;-)

For me it would be Isle of Cats, Paper Tales, Bunny Kingdom, and Caper: Europe. Paper Tales doesn't get a lot of love because there are only four rounds, which means that the game ends before you can really get a points engine going, but the decaying mechanism is neat. I really enjoy it.

„Closed drafting“ -> Good theme for a list. Totally agree, there are not so many good ones.
@mm-si3qi
@mm-si3qi 6 ай бұрын
2 games I would consider. First one Ecosystem Savanna by genius games. The theme is you are creating an ecosystem, this case an African ecosystem, specifically the grasslands of Africa. Each card you can draft scores by being next to other appropriate cards. So, a zebra wants to be next to grasslands. Giraffes next to trees. Elephants don’t want to be around other animals except other elephants or landscapes, like watering holes, trees or grasslands. What you are doing is drafting one card at a time, and building a 5x4 grid, or 4x5 grid by placing one card at a time. You have two rounds of drafting, and are drafting ten cards each round. Only rule of placing a card is that it has to be next to another card already placed. Only time that rules is ignored is the first round as you have no cards yet. Highest score wins. Would not recommend ecosystem. The scoring is boring and not much replay-ability. Ecosystem coral reef is better than ecosystem, but still has some end scoring that holds it back as my favorite. But definitely the best version, my opinion, is ecosystem Savanna. It definitely shines at certain play counts, as the game does not scale with more players. You want 4 or 5 players, in my opinion. The complexity is more than sushi go, and maybe slightly less than ohnami. The scoring is not as clean though as the other two. But it gives me the complexity I want, and I like bunny kingdom. You already know how that scores. Nowhere near as complex as that, but it isn’t sushi go fast. The second game is come sail away by saashi & saashi.Theme is getting passengers into a cruise ship by following placement rules outlined in the rules. Definitely more brain burner than most of if not all the games here. But the decision making is definitely worth the effort.
@mm-si3qi

One game that gets overlooked is Steampunk Rally. There is a draft of 4 cards every round that is critical to set you up for the engine building and race portion of the game. Have you played it? I have never heard you mention it, I thoroughly enjoy it! Another game that could be considered is Between to cities/castles which has a fun closed tile drafting mechanic that is basically the entire game besides the tile laying puzzle with what you draft. Great list otherwise, Beer and Bread is certainly a good one for this list IMO

Definitely think Blood Rage should be on the list. I'd also rank Terraforming Mars and Inis higher than you have them. I'd probably have Inis at the top of my list. Really love the tension of the draft in that one. Also, I don't think TM is too long with 4 but totally agree that you have to play with drafting and Prelude and no more than one other expansion. In fact, we almost never play with any expansion other than Prelude. I find it interesting that I haven't played many of these games since I think closed drafting is a very good mechanism. Beast is another one you could have considered. We were looking forward to the drafting aspect of it but found the game overall was very hit and miss for us.

I think you don't acknowledge why so many people love Terraforming Mars at 3-4 while they love Arc Nova especially at 2. It's the interaction that matters at Terraforming Mars. It's not only the closed drafting (which is brilliant but honestly not even part of the basic rules), but it's the board. It matters A LOT what is going on on the map because you can make a lot of points with cities and green areas and you need a very good timing to prevent other players from taking your "prepared" spots. And the different boards matter because they come with different milestones and challenges which again can define a part of your strategy. Terrafoming Mars is my #2 of all time. Nevertheless I find it interesting that it's even on your list because the drafting is only a small part of the game and no main mechanism. Though, I appreciate that you have it on your list because indeed the drafting is one of the most enjoyable part of the game. I would even say that the drafting is more interesting/interactive than in most other drafting games BECAUSE the game is designed so that you hardly ever buy all cards that you choose because you dont have the money. So from my experience, the "hate drafting" aspect is one of the highest of all drafting games, because it makes approx. 25-50% of the drafting. That is quite unique and in a lot of drafting games it's not even possible to do effectively because you play EVERY card you choose.

The bigger board of bunny kingdom is the absolute best. At least it made an honorable mention for you. It is one of my favorite games. I like the way the board looks with all the bunnies covering it by the end. I don't mind the scoring. It actually doesn't take very long until the third round. If you play on board game arena, problem solved, but I don't find it a problem. If a parchment asks for how many carrots I grew or how many mountains I have, I don't try to count those on the board, I put those cards at the bottom of my discard pile grouped together. On the other hand, I do like your number one game and I do have it, and I would bring it out more if the set up wasn't such a bear. You have to change cards in and out depending on the player number, so you have to store them in order which means that whoever helped you take it down at the end of the game was paying attention, or you have to do all that when you set up. While I agree that the thing you might compare it to is meh, I found the graphic about it before the 29 minute mark to be offensive.

Put it straight into the sell bucket and buy Caper: Europe instead. Much better game and you don’t need both…

Gosh, you cannot make me play Citadels again with gun point. A game where you can be forced to skip your turn should not exists.

If you have Neom on here then you should consider Warsaw: City of Ruins. It is the superior city building game with closed drafting. Probably my favourite city building game. Have you played it?

No, is that the small box game with the dreadful cover? Guess that doesn't narrow it down.

@TheBrokenMeeple No, not small box. Same size square box as Apiary. I would bet good money you'd like Warsaw. I didn't play Neom again after playing Warsaw.

It’s called Capital in Europe. And I agree, it’s the best city building drafting game. I bought it as a present for someone and got Neom for myself and have regretted it ever since!

I don't agree with your assessment that there is not a lot of good closed drafting games, on top of your list, here is 10 more. Keyflow, It's a wonderful world, Warsaw City of Ruins, Isle of Cats, Magic the Gathering, Bunny Kingdom, Dungeon Draft, Draftosaurus, Imperial Settlers / 51st state, Subdivision.

Magic is not a drafting game, that's a variant for setup. Keyflow if it's the one I'm thinking of was incredibly fiddly and convuluted. Cats was OK but drags out too long and only play it solo where the drafting isn't a factor. Imperial Sellers and State were replaced by Empires of the North. You're the first person I've heard to even mention Subdivision much less play it.

Isle of Cats would be our top one.

Isle of Cats was on short list but I think it drags on so much in multiplayer so I play it solo and in that you don't draft.

Your right it can drag, but with our family we’ve played it soooooo many times we are quite well slick now and not too bad. Plus with family there’s always lots of laughs and banter so not so bad if it does go a little AP from time to time.
