People are morons today. Blazing Saddles shows racism but that it's hurtful and wrong. You feel bad for the sheriff and empathize with him. But some people are just idiots. "There's a sexist character in American Pie." Yeah, and everyone loathes him.

It's not the audience's responsibility to be funny, is it? Comedy is cultural. It's funny only at the time it was made to be funny. Comedies today wouldn't be funny in the 80's like those in the list wouldn't be funny in the 60's.

I have a friend named Candy & use it all the time on her. The cowboys eating beans & drinking coffee around the fire pit, pure genius by Mel Brooks. Gene Wilder & Richard Pryor were fantastic together. Yes, it's sad we'll never be able to laugh this hard again at the movies with all the PC politics of today.

Frankly, it would be easier to release Life of Brian today than what it was back in 1979. Notice that WatchMojo aren't exactly a bunch of film historians. The movie received an enormous backlash, leading to the original production company to leave the project due to massive criticism by the religious institutions, only to be saved by a guy known as George Harrison (who had a short cameo in the film).

I think the key is being able to recognize when a specific joke, or possibly plotline for a show or movie or whatever, takes things too far, or does an offensive joke just for the sake of being offensive. if something's funny it doesn't always have to be edgy or cross a line, and that's I think where some people can't draw a distinction

The original commentor is saying that many audiences in today's climate would completely miss that due to looking at things on a surface level (something Hollywood has bred people to do over the years) The original commentor isn't whining in the slightest. And actually what you did is put words into his mouth. At no point did he complain he couldn't stereotype or be racist. He complained that Blazing Saddles, again a film that mocked racists, would likely be thrown out by most studios, as said studios wouldn't want to take the risk of rippling the waters. tl;dr Blazing saddles isn't racist, and you assumed a person's intentions just because you disagree with their point, but couldn't find a valid reason to justify your argument

Personally, I remembered "Heathers" for being a good dark comedy. The best part about it was Christian Slater's impression of Jack Nicholson in doing his role in the film. As for the other movie named "Partners," with Ryan O'Neal, I was not impressed with the old stereotypical view of gay men because it made me, a straight person, homophobic at the time and I was guilty of it. I just hope that there be good comedy films from an LGBT point of view in the future that would help smash such stereotypes.

"Soul Man" is not a racist movie but a movie against racism. I already get that when I watched it as a child. For me blackfacing isn´t always something bad. In my view it can even be a sign of admiration when a white person disguises himself (or herself) as a person of color. In primary school I dressed up for carnival (I´m from Germany) once as a Black African native and another time as a man from China and I didn´t do that because I was a racist (which I never was) but because I was fascinated by those foreign people from a young age. If today a child would wear such a costume it would probably be expelled from school and its parents would be reported. These PC fanatics really exaggerate.

It's completely and 100% achievable for a person to 'appreciate' someone's culture / heritage / traditions without painting your face. It's unnecessary. Just do it in a respectul manner it really is not that difficult. If you were so fascinated and intrigued then try to educate yourself and not justify / downplay the situation. Don't forget that the narrator already acknowledged that the movie had a narrative and was trying to promote a message, we get it. But if it's not your culture or heritage then I fail to understand how you're saying what's offensive and what's not, that doesn't make sense. Rather just speak up for white German men and let Black or Asian people speak for themselves. Do yourself a favour and also search the history of black face then you'll have a little bit more of an understanding from a factual point of view as opposed to attributing it to PC fanatics being exaggerative. Take it as a learning curve. We all don't know everything.

@@lesegomashifane1935 I hope this bs is irony. You just can´t be seriously. Shouldn´t blacks better all wear tribal costumes and Japanese kimonos? And how could Louis Armstrong dare to play the trumpet? Shouldn´t he better played the drum? And what about Japanese who dye their hair brown (that´s very common in Japan)?Should I as a caucasian feel offended that they imitate this hair color many members of my ethnicity (me included ) have? F**k yourself and don´t ever dare again to imply that I am a racist! PC fanatics like you are the real racists because they don´t regard people as individuals but as members of identitarian groups. And "people of color" don´t seem to be common fellow human beings for you but mystical exotic foreigners who you put on a pedestal and worship as superior beings and eternal victims.

If you actually look into the entire history of blackface, from the start it was used as a means to belittle black people and make them out to be stupid and foolish. The entire purpose of its conception was to insult the entire race. There is no admiration to be shown with it. Please actually research its history, because as someone who has I can tell you that this statement comes across as downplaying a very large stain on the history of theatre and acting. Also, not really sure what about the first person's response "implied you were racist" and made you feel the need to blow up the way you did. Might want to read it all again and reevaluate how you should have reacted. Literally the only driving point they had was "don't use blackface" and "educate yourself on its history" and you felt the need to go on a tangent about the supposed hypocrisy of cultural appropriation when it wasn't even mentioned. All in all I'm probably waisting my time since I'll likely be met with the same hostility that you showed the first person, but hey, here's hoping maybe you learn something.

@howardpope3932 3 жыл бұрын
@@gabrielbush1325 I don´t care about the history of blackfacing and the intentions of some racists. That blackfacing was invented in order to belittle blacks does not mean that everyone who dyes his (or her or its) complexion does it because he is a racist. I´m sure the writer of the screenplay of "Soul Man" wasn´t a racist and neither was I when I dressed as a black native. I bet you are also one of those people who are opposed to tatoos because SS men had been tatooed, too and because the prisoners of concentration camps got a tatoo. Things can have totally different meaning in different eras of history. Explain one thing to me: In what way have I been belitteling or insulting any black man by dressing as an African native?all I bet, if I have had a black classmate, he hadn´t felt offended at all. By the way: Why do you PC fanatics care so much for people of color anyway. Did they chose you as their lawyers? People like you seem to consider people of colors to be helpless children who need your support. Don´t you think they are able to care of themself and defend themself? And do they also care about you? Do you get anything back for your support? I mean something else than the possibility to polish your do-gooder badge? You should better search for another, less condescending purpose in life.
