Agreed. They almost seemed to be throwing a little shade at it too. Outside of The Thing (that CG line eesh), it's probably the best movie on this list IMO.

It was visually appealing, but the writing and characterization was lacking...

If it had a little more direction it could've been a masterpiece... but that bear scene was the most unsettling thing I've ever saw in a movie... it bothered me for a while after I saw it.

I've watched a few of their videos now, and I'm even more inclined to believe that they haven't seen many of the movies on their lists. I've noticed little things here and there that are inaccurate. I've also noticed they have got the plot of the movie wrong a a couple of times as well.

For me it's the Thing and the opening of T2. I have to include T2 because that masterful future war scene in the opening is all practical, while the 4 lame sequels that came after have tried to imitate using CGI and looks like complete shit. Dark Fate cost $200 million to make and they make the T800s look like cartoons compared to what Cameron & Winston pulled off in 1991.

I was thinking that exact same thing as he said it. That hellscape scene was pretty gory.

Especially "Annihilation", the plot is kicked off by the missing guy mysteriously showing up out of nowhere at the start.

I kind of wished I had known that it is based on Dante's Inferno so I wasn't left with a lot of 'WTF?' moments. If people aren't familiar with Dante, they might not connect well with it and brush it off as a confusing and convoluted horror movie. I for one appreciated it

Uzumaki will be better when it's adapted to anime

-The Endless- & its prequel -Resolution- are excellent examples of fear of the unknown cosmic horror. I love how the movie portrays Yog Sothoth as the unknown creature overlooking the entire camp. Really looking forward to the 3rd movie in the series.

Uzumaki is still good as a stand alone film, but you won't really get it as much, if you haven't read the Manga. But yeah it's still worth a watch.

Honestly, Uzamaki isn't that good of a film. Read the manga insted. I'm fact dead all of Junji Ito's works, as he is in my opinion this generations Lovecraft.

From what I've heard, the footage of the hellscape was absolutely brutal. They had hired some porn stars for the scene, so beyond the gore it was sexually explicit. Apparently the original footage was stored in some mine somewhere in Russia I think and is gone.

That ending was beyond stupid. Should've left it ambiguous like the book but Darabont was going through a dark phase.

Yeah I think most people would agree with that. It's my hope that Covid shutting down Hollywood, we might get a return to lower budget, quality movies, that return to the old way of doing things. If you're ever bored, listen to Rick Baker (the world's greatest make up and effects artist) on Joe Rogan.

Good CGI can be amazing but it's rare. The remake of The Hills Have Eyes has some truly amazing CGI/practical hybrid effects. Great movie too, better than the original imo, which is also rare. But it mostly uses practical, with limited CGI for specific purposes.

They did do a list of Lovecraft movie and I think a good few of those were on that list

It was underrated in 1997, but today I think most Horror fans regard it as a genre classic.

After a second viewing I think I don't like Paul W. Anderson movies. Also, The Prodigy song at the end was an odd choice.

It's only THE best Cosmic Horror film ever made!

Alien is not cosmic horror. bud. Its horror, alien horror, space horror, creature horror, you name it. But for it to be cosmic horror, then the actions of the xenomorph would have to be unfathomable to the characters. In Alien, its pretty straight forward, it wants to fuck 'em up.

Tall dessicated elephantine proof of some unimaginable species with UNIMA, sorry UNFATHOMABLE Technological Prowess... That scene ALONE puts it well into the Cosmic Horror Category. EDIT: It's only a shame that S.R. Scott couldn't pull off a decent storyline for that magnificently creepy dead sentinel and his ship.

When we speak of the xenomorph, we are speaking of a creature that exists in a limited space within the cosmos. Humans, just as xenos exists within a limited speck of space within the cosmos. If we followed your logic, then an astronaut movie would also be considered a cosmic movie. So tell me, are we cosmic beings?. or are we defined by the limited space we occupy in the confines of the universe?.

I'm hoping there is a set of initial writers who have actually watched the movies and then editors and a narrator who might not, so they may make changes that end up being wrong when they think they are just cleaning something up. Reasons? Even a basic exercise in logic says this is a suicide mission (something bookworms aren’t known for going on…) and, as it turns out, the only trait all the characters share is a desire to die! It’s like this whole mission was just an elaborate way for these hapless nerds to kill themselves! Sorry, but a horror story with characters that deliberately seek their own deaths isn’t very compelling. Also, the pacing was ridiculously slow due in large part to all the flashbacks of the main protagonist’s failing marriage - who gives a shit about any of that? Do we get insights into the family life of Professor Armitage in “The Dunwich Horror” or learn about the relationship between the nameless protagonist of “Dagon” and his wife (if he even has one)? No! Such details detract from the horrifying scene around the characters in this cosmic horror tale and the horror is the true star of the show: not some insignificant little human’s failing relationships.

I've seen event horizon an unhealthy amount of times and I'm fine with that. It's one of the greats alongside alien the thing and predator.

Yeah I've been trying to figure out why cosmic horror is always confused for alien and Cthulhu movies.. like it's almost as if the genre itself bleeds into even finding a movie that can fit it.

Pandorum was an excellent film... I'm my top 10

I enjoy Pandorum, rewatched last week. But I see that as pretty straight up Sci-Fi, not cosmic. Not all Sci-Fi films are Cosmic horror / Lovecraftian. I will say really enjoy 10 Cloverfileld Lane, but Cloverfield Paradox was a mess. Not sure deserves to be mentioned among great films like The Thing.
