Regarding Jamaica, and as a Jamaican, I can tell you that one argument which has been posited for Usain Bolt's sprint excellence is the diet he's been exposed to; specifically, the amount of yam he may have eaten, given that he hails from the parish of Trelawny, which is a yam-centric area in our country, and (for those who don't know) yam is a starchy food that gives quite a lot of energy.

As a Jamaican, I can say our revered sprinting reputation is true. I was four years old when Usain Bolt entered the 2008 Summer Olympics, and honestly I never knew his triumph there would be the beginning of that reputation. Even though Bolt is now retired as of 2017 after the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janiero, Brazil, his influence in Jamiacan sports is still evident as track and field is the most popular sport in the country towering on top of other popular sports such as soccer and cricket. I am not a sports person myself (I am more of a cinephile, Canadophile and indie pop/indie rock/alternative rock & animation connoiseur than anything), however, I am aware and proud of this contribution of ours to popular culture in general and sports history. That said, I really expected Japan to show up for their anime and manga...

As an Indian, I thank you for the shout-out. However, if you're looking at the Indian-American doctors working in America, that's a far cry from the quality of doctors in India itself. Indians who have successfully emigrated to America are, not surprisingly, at the top of their professions-academia, business, computer programming, medicine, tech company CEOs etc. But they are not at all representative of the Indians who continue to live and work in India. In any case, it shouldn't be surprising that large countries like India, China, and America would be good at several different things, simply due to their huge populations and resources. This video was going for the "surprise" aspect-how certain countries, with far smaller populations and/or fewer resources, have managed to excel in specific fields.

@kevinmusundi1291
@kevinmusundi1291 11 ай бұрын
Yes, Australia is very good at swimming, but have you also considered that swimming has waaaaay too many medals, some of the events in track and field were done away with probably because of the dominance of the East Africand ; Kenya and Ethiopia but still with very little equipment and poor training facilities and lack of sponsorship Kenya still manages to dominate. If the Global North were good at these sports you can rest assured or bet your last $ that they would increase the events in track and field. Then again there was Michael Phelps who took the glory away from Australia, before him Australia took home many gold medals in swimming. If you take a look at the medal standings at the Summer Olympics Kenya and Jamaica are the only third world countries or only countries with low GDP that appear in the top 10.

@@kevinmusundi1291 I’m taking nothing away from Kenya chief. Also swimming has different strokes that’s why there are so many events, it’s not like there are multiple ways to run (hurdles being the only other way I guess) so I don’t think it’s about them being biased to the “global north” and it’s about the lack of possibilities for other track events. I don’t mind Croatia being excluded, but if the video were solo disproportionate on sports, what Croatia has done in the past 10-years in football has been impressive.

I love football! And you should include Brazil soccer as their special sports. There is a quote: The Chinese invented football, The British who modernized it, The Brazilian who perfected it! Brazil has won all of the FIFA RECOGNIZED COMPETITION including the FIFA WORLD CUP 5 times, their highest honour! Also other competitions officially recognized by FIFA are: FIFA Confederation Cup, FIFA Olympic football, FIFA under 20 World Cup, FIFA u17 World Cup, FIFA Futsal competition, FIFA Beach soccer game, FIFA Youth Olympic Futsal! Now which country has won all of these competitions like Brazil?

Canada for hockey and lacrosse. We play hockey a lot, and it does not matter if their is ice or not. Road hockey, field hockey, shinny (a type of street hockey) and of course regular street hockey which everyone in the area will hear someone (most of the time the goalie) will yell "CAR" when any vehicle is approaching. And most kids in Canada no matter your culture or back ground will play some form of hockey once in their life.

11. (even higher) Croatia - sport in general: football (1998, 2018, 2022, 2023), Basketball (90s), Handball (2003-?), Water Polo (always), Skiing (Janica and Ivica Kostelić), Tennis (Karlović, Čilić, Ljubičić, Ančić...), Box (Parlov, Hrgović), UFC (Mirko Filipović), Rowing (Sinković Brothers), Blanka Vlašić, Olympic individuals ( Sandra Perković, Matea Jelić, Sara Kolak...) and more with knowing that Croatia have less then 4 milion population

How are you going to put Jamaica for sprinting but not Kenya for long distance? I get that Kenya has a larger population at 50 million but proportionally speaking they should not be so dominant in long distance, especially the marathon.

Most medals overall at the winter olympics a century into the competition, a millenium of skiing history and currently around 5 million (0,07 % of total world population) relatively rich people with a cultural lean towards sports and outdoor activities.
