The Love Bug is still one of my favorite car movies. Herbie didn't "split to get an advantage", he was sabotaged by Thorndyke and over stressed, so he broke in half from having to drive like a ski and all the other stuff in the movie. Also, Bullitt is one of my favorite car chases because they didn't hide the damage done to both cars. They didn't lose the same trim ring three times in a row and magically get un-dented as the chase went on. Also, after the Charger crashes and burns, the Mustang blows a ball joint in the sliding stop and it made it (briefly) on camera.

Supposedly, the mustang also smashes it's oil pan on one of the jumps. If you look closely you can spot the stain and smoke after it rebounds from the impact.

Apparently the other stunt riders were having trouble keeping up with McQueen, so the director asked him to put on a German uniform and film the riders chasing him, which I think makes it the only scene where an actor chased themselves.

I dig this series of greatest car chases, I've just watched them all from 60's to 00's. There's some great movies in there, but there's so many great movies you've missed... For instance, the Australian movie from the 70's "Running on Empty"? Or "Vanishing point" with the white 71 Challenger. Even the last release of "The Dukes of Hazard" movie rates mention, especially if your putting "Fast and Furious" in the lists. Even Stephen Kings "Christine" with the demonic Plymouth Fury that comes to life, or "American Graffiti" has some awesome hotrod footage. Like I was saying, there's some awesome movies in the top 10 lists you put together, but I just remembered 4 or 5 movies that I personally think deserve a place in their respective lists more so than some others. And if you had to use the F&F titles, Tokyo drift and the very 1st Fast & Furious titles were defs the best. Aside from Dom's blown charger that breaks physics by popping a wheel stand while also blowing the tyres off at launch and breaking traction for half the 1/4 mile... One of my most fav car flicks ever is the 2013 release of "Rush" with Chris Hemsworth. The story about F1 racing during the most dangerous period with the story focussing on James Hunt (Hemsworth) and Niki Lauda (Daniel Brühl). Fantastic cinematography and the driving scenes really displayed the speed, power and brutality of the 70's F1 cars.... Maybe there's another top 10 list amongst some of those titles I named. Keep up the great work brother.

@6:37. I'm pretty sure that Steve McQueen drove the Mustang and the guy who drove the Charger was a stuntman named Bill Hickman.
@bondhughbond
@bondhughbond 4 жыл бұрын
Loren Janes did most of the driving in the Mustang but McQueen did some of it. They brought in Janes after McQueen screwed up a few takes. Bill Hickman did drive the Charger and he's the actor you see on the screen as well. Hickman also drove in the Love Bug and many other movies, including Diamonds Are Forever, The French Connection and The Seven-Ups. He also acted the those last two. Bud Ekins (not "Edkins" as the guy in this poorly researched video says) was a friend of Steve McQueen's who worked at a motorcycle dealership and became McQueen's main stunt double because he bore a resemblance to McQueen. He's the guy who dumped the motorcycle in the Bullitt (not "Bullit" as the video shows) chase and also the guy who did the more difficult motorcycle stunts in The Great Escape. He also did some of the Mustang driving in Bullitt. Loren Janes also doubled for McQueen in other movies and he also worked on It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. It's hard to verify which stuntmen worked on what because they were uncredited in those days. Everything I stated here can be verified because I've done the research....unlike the people who made the video above. But they got over 200K views on a monetized piece of trash so good for them.

I think the plot of It's a mad mad mad mad world could have been explained rather than just what was happening at that moment. Plot: when a criminal sails off a cliff and some witnesses see he tells them where he hid $350,000 and a mad chase develops when they don't agree on sharing the money. With collapsing fire exits, Terry Thomas, people going bananas and a plane from 1916, this film is a great watch.

The engine sounds from Bullitt (2 Ts, not one) aren't "pure." Whilst the engine sound of the Dodge is as-filmed, that for the Mustang was actually recorded from a Ford GT40 racing car of the type that beat Ferrari at the Le Mans 24 Hour race, the sound of the Willment-developed and built 7.0 litre big block racing V8 being felt more appropriate than that of the standard, albeit highly-tuned 390 in the Mustang GT. Bud Ekins was only one of the stunt drivers used for driving the Mustang in the chase, Steve McQueen himself (a talented racing driver in his own right) did all the driving for the close-up scenes, while stunt coordinator Carey Loftin (the driver of the big dirty Pete in Duel) and McQueen's usual stunt driver Loren Janes along with Ekins drove the Mustang in the high-speed and distance shots (it's quite easy to tell in the film, if the interior mirror is flipped up then McQueen is driving and usually visible, if it's flipped down it is one of the stunt drivers.) Bud Ekins is most visible as the person who lays the motorbike down in front of the skidding truck as the chase passes. The Charger was driven throughout by Bill Hickman, incredibly talented stunt driver, actor, racing driver and first person on the scene of James Dean's fatal collision. Hickman also sourced the Chargers (375hp 440 R/T 4-speeds) used in the film after the Ford Galaxies provided by Ford as promotional partners, along with the Mustangs, were deemed too heavy and slow to make the chase work, though that did provide another problem in that the Dodges were so much more powerful than the Mustangs (375 hp against a factory 325 for the 390 Mustang and probably around 340-345 in the film cars) that the driver of the Dodge had to keep backing off to avoid losing the Mustang...

Oh, hell the great race with Tony Curtis, Gone in 60 seconds (oh that was 74), 1966 Fireball 500 with Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello, 1966 Spinout with Elvis oh that beautiful AC cobra right in the river. Oh there's so many.

While it's a great movie chase scene, Steve McQueen did not do the jump over the fence in The Great Escape. That was his longtime friend and stunt double Bud Ekins. Ekins had a motorcycle shop in the Los Angeles area and that's how he met McQueen and became his friend. McQueen bought his bikes from Ekins as well.

Pretty sure Bullit gave us videogames decades later. First time a dashboard POV was shown much like in the videogames' style.

Lots of good movies from the 60s. In Goldfinger, the submachine gun the old lady uses is a German MP40, not a Tommy Gun.
