Villisca, Iowa, is my mother's hometown, and is one of the many perfectly normal Iowa villages set aside by changes in agriculture. Like other such towns, it lacks a grocery store and probably other facilities common in larger communities. My mother was born there in 1903 and returned from college to teach school there in the 1920s. Her father was a livestock broker there for many years. The axe murder has puzzled everyone in town, but nobody thought that much about it till Iowa became obsessed with being a tourist attraction. That led an enterprising young couple to decide the axe murder was Villisca's claim to fame. However, I suspect the death in the 1960s due to Dutch Elm Disease of the ancient trees shading the town's streets has affected the populace more than the 1912 murders.

I live in Alaska and have been to Whittier on a day trip. It’s definitely spooky and weird - they’re very wary of outsiders because they know EVERYONE in the town - but what most people never mention cuz they’ve only read about it as a statistic is that it’s surrounded by mountains so it’s foggy 99% of the time. It’s a pretty drive and only an hour and a half or so from Anchorage, but the sunny drive all the way there becomes a thick foggy mess once you exit the tunnel in Whittier. That’s what makes it spookier, it’s like going to another dimension! Then the abandoned military barracks (the abandoned building mentioned) looks even scarier! The reason people live in the same building is lack of space but also because of the origins of the town. It’s a former military base for the US Military against the Japanese because of its extremely secluded location behind mountains and on an inlet. The old building is the old barracks. This newer building was built when that one fell into disrepair. The entire town is almost quite literally built into it. There is a school across the street and some people do have houses - a VERY small few - but the main industry there is fishing I think. Also, Begich is pronounced “bay-gitch”, named after the man himself. Creepy legacy to leave I guess 😳

I visited Whitter in the middle of winter. It was amazing. People there were incredibly nice, and the weather there was like 15 degrees warmer than Anchorage and (when I visited) 20 degrees warmer than my Illinois hometown. Whittier is next to a deep lagoon that moderates the temperature (this is also why the town exists--it was built originally as a navel base). You can rent very affordable AirBNBs in the tower. One of the few separate buildings is the school, which has roughly 30 students across all 12 grades. They have a small health clinic in the tower too. One thing not often mentioned is the wind. One of the days I visited the wind was so strong it was hard to walk outside. Also, a lot of people talk about the access situation (with the tunnel only open part of the day, etc), but in the context of Alaska, Whitter is seen as one of the more accessible small towns. Most small Alaskan towns are "off the road network" and can only be accessed by airplane or (sometimes) boat.

I'm surprised Picher Ok. didn't make the list. It has been called the most toxic place in the US due to the mining that went on last century. I think it has finally been abandoned although there were a handful of holdouts who refused to leave for the longest time. The tornado of 2008 virtually wiped out what was left of the town and at that time, I think the remaining residents finally cleared out. It's now a virtual ghost town roped off and abandoned, with huge chat piles nearby. Lots of videos here to check out.

@MxNobody, no history has been washed over. We love our history & our heritage. We don’t like strangers, most people in an area are kin to each other via 2-3 cousins down the line. We’ve have invaders, intruders, instigators & none are welcome. It isn’t just the south, each community have their own heritage. We moved to small-town OK & they are the same way here. One of the residents was open with me about the racism & hangings. All of OK is Indian land. It wasn’t an Indian or Mexican. We welcome anyone now, but are still wary of strangers. There are many mixed families in our area. When we were in MS it was very klanish. I was kin to most everyone I met, but they still have their cliques you can’t cross. We were very rural & our neighbors were both black & Indian. We went to a mixed church & I took my Choctaw kids to the 1,400 membership church in the large nearby town. They were made to feel welcome & assimilated. Mind you, I asked a staff member if they thought anyone would have any objections. Their answer was the “oldSouth” is fading away & the older people are dying. This was 1980s. MS is much more progressive than dirt-roads OK. All cow-pig trails were paved. When we turned off the highway onto a dirt road we saw a motor-grader. I made the statement, I haven’t seen one of those in over 40 years. My children never had seen one but my g’daughter wasn’t impressed. Her school here is 300 k-12, in a cow pasture & see huge planes flying, banking & making maneuvers. It is in the top list in the state. They even have a cattle drive thru the base & down thru town on main for their yearly rodeo. We are blessed; life is good. God is good.

@@jameshatchard3471 methinks you don’t have a grasp of racism. My family was never racist. My g’ma had an uncle who lost a limb in the CW. My g’pa had a store & during the depression he sold land yet carried poor & blacks on their accounts & skipping rents. He wasn’t a progressive, he was a democrat, as our whole family. We had blacks & Indians as neighbors. Everyone helped their neighbor. Many blacks put their money away & bought land, built nice houses & raised good kids. I think what you’re referring to is #GenerationalWelfare! 1964-5, LBJ’s #GreatSociety, removed the responsible male head-of-household & paid them every time they popped a kid. MS (US) is full of gangs recruiting thugs. Thugs are taking over distributing drugs (coke, meth & fentanyl). Thanks to the “open border” policy!

To this day I've heard that a handful of people are still being stalked by the Mothman. The demon is a terrorizer that hides out in different area's in the woods in West Virginia. People go out looking for the Mothman and do find him in spiritual form. Those people claimed they are terrorized in the woods in some way and then when they return home the Mothman does show up and terrorize them inside their houses at different times. All these people proclaim that they are terrorized off and on by the spirit of the Mothman because they sought him in the woods and tried to connect with him in some way and are still terrorized by the demon in some way due to trying to seek him in the woods.

Right you are! The Salton Sea is gorgeous from a distance, but when you get closer the smell overwhelms you and the beaches that look like white sand are actually layers upon layers of rotting fish bodies and bones. I did notice a lot of beautiful water-birds like herons and egrets, they were there to pick at the scraps. I'm a photographer and found some of the ruins of a once=thriving resort town interesting, but the smell, weird vibe, and giant swarms of flies chased me away pretty quickly.

Good point, but when someone gets murdered in a city of 10,000 or 100,000 or a million no one really notices or gets too scared since the chances of themselves being the next victim are low. When someone gets murdered in a city of 100 or even 1000, it's much more frightening. If they don't get caught soon there's a huge likelihood you could be a next victim, and the added creepiness of knowing that you might know the killer personally and they know you is very offputting. Knowing there's a killer in a small town also discourages people and businesses coming there, so it can't grow big enough for a murder to not be a dooming smear on the whole town's reputation. It stays in a constant state of scariness and that's what makes these towns so creepy.

@@justgween7573 When a murder occurs in a small community, it's usually something personal, and a completely isolated incident. Big urban centers on the other hand foster a culture of crime, and criminals are less likely to get caught there. The only "safe" urban center I can think of might be Reykjavik in Iceland. The entire country (360,000 people) has an average murder rate of 1 or 2 per year. Yes, one or two INDIVIDUAL victims in a whole damn YEAR, not thousands. In Detroit 14 deaths is a bad Friday.

@Niamh De Na Crainn Arda I can't be mean to my Sims either. But Simcity towns are different. I'd run the town at cheetah speed with no expenditures until it made 20 million simoleans and then I'd have enough cash to do really cool stuff. The original Sims games were the best. I still play them once in awhile.

I live in Anchorage 40 miles from Whittier. Whittier is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been in my life. The abandoned building- the Buckner building, used to house military that’s why the town of Whittier exist it used to be a military base with tunnels and the Buckner building was built to withstand bombs, and then the huge 1964 earthquake made the building not sound to live in and because of the asbestos it’s too expensive to destroy the building and take it through the tunnel so the building stays standing- it’s eerie but makes Whittier even more interesting. Military folks do not live in Whittier anymore so the people who live in the tower and some of the houses in the town live there for various reasons. The Buckner building is one of the more interesting things in the town it had a bowling alley and a movie theater and a jail it housed 1000 people at one point. we break into it all the time and take cool pictures. The railroad owns a lot of the town and trains come through, and huge cruise ships sail out of Whittier along with glacier and wildlife tours. There is also a huge waterfall that is very hikable. If you come to Alaska Whittier is a must stop spot.

Housing shortages are mainly a blue-state/blue-city problem, because of the excess zoning, environmental, labor, and NIMBY regulations that dicincentivize new construction. Mass homelessness is partly a byproduct of that.

A major issue with rebuilding these towns is that in many cases, it is simply no longer economically viable to have these small towns in the middle of nowhere. America is not hurting for land by any means, and typically homes in these areas are already dirt cheap. A house doesn't do much good if it's a 3 hour drive from work or resources.

When you head to Scotland from England there's a village I passed through once or twice. You might not think weather is creepy but consider this. The fog can become so thick here that there's a cerfew to prevent people from getting lost or falling off a cliff its like the real silent hill. My dad said once he had to park his van for hours cause he could not see anything but fog. Like staring into a piece of paper he said he put his hand out in front of him and couldn't see his fingers. Imagine getting lost or and hurt in that.

I've traveled through towns that made me feel uneasy. It was like driving into the 1940s, 1950s. Went to a truck stop for a bite to eat, the waitresses there hadn't changed since the 1950s, wearing their hair the same way, I thought maybe it's just the theme of the truck stop. I found out that they'd been there since the 1950s, and have never renovated, including the staff apparently. Don't get me wrong they were the nicest people you'd want to meet. It was just odd to then walk into the gas station's store and have the entire group of people there stop conversation and just stare at me, it was like they all knew each other and I was the stranger in town. Eerie.

I did social work for almost 15 years. Centralia and the small surrounding areas were my territory. It was pretty creepy. I would have to go sign clients up for assistance programs and it’s a rough area. This whole area of PA is. It’s been so ravaged by coal companies and pharmaceutical companies. I don’t miss those late night client visits and drives through those backwoods though. I miss some of my clients but I was in true danger most of the time.

Uh yeah, some small towns are really nice. But the video isn't bashing every small town in America, now, is it. No. It's only shining light on specific towns by name. While he might have been too harsh with some of the towns - like Point Pleasant or Visilica, I would not want to live in a town where the road dead-ends into the woods and everyone comes out onto their porches to stare at you as you turn around and ride back through. Nor would I want to live in a town taken over by some sick and twisted Indian cult that poisons people and has some fucked up worldviews. And I certainly wouldn't want to live in a town that is slowly burning from below with sinkholes and toxic fumes and buildings that are collapsing. Now, whether you want to be a virtual prisoner in your own home like that town in Alaska, that's up to you. And keep in mind that most of the video did not show the actual places being talked about. Hell, the one about Cairo, Illinois actually showed a video of Pitttsburgh, PA, for Christ's sake, complete with skyscrapers, the confluence of three rivers (where Three Rivers Stadium used to be), and other obvious Pittsburgh landmarks. Yet it said "Cairo, IL" right underneath it. So don't let the damn video fool you - it's the stories that needed to be paid attention to.
