DB 880 selectamatic Bought by my parents 6/9/1969 It's done around 12000hrs. Proud to say I learnt to drive on her. Still going strong and makes the most sweet sound. My parents also had cropmaster, 995, and 1290 and I had a 1490. None compared to the 880.

I just bought an 880 last weekend, which needs some serious tlc and a new paint job. I really do like the white color of it (it is red and other colors at the moment) , makes it look very retro. Glad to hear they seem very reliable.

We will all have our opinions but for me the no1 has to be the selectamatic 880, the power to weight was perfect, the selectamatic hydraulics and a super torque bomb proof engine. I use a 1967 model for ploughing match's, perfect

I just bought a 990 and thought it would be a little bit lighter duty for my needs. But I wouldn't trade it for a new one. Being a British tractor, when I grew up with IH, I just have to get used to the odd hydraulic system. But it seems plenty capable. Just confused about why they used selective porting instead of everything live. It's a lurnig curve but it's also a gem of a tractor. Thanks for the video.

From England the 1290 &1390 Had a David Brown Engine as did the 1490, the 1200 4WD Pictured apears to have Bray Conversion rather than the DB 4WD conversion making it a Hens Teeth tractor. We have owned a 990 and 1210 4WD, My Late uncle ran 880 990 1200 2WD & 4WD and a 2WD 1212 making it a Hydrashift tractor in the early seventies.

Here in england we were told the parent company that owned the DB plant near Sheffield got the opportunity to buy out the International Harvester Company , whose main tractor plant was in Doncaster , also South Yorkshire , this left one company holding a massive & unfortunately over - capacitied tractor facility , despite the most loyal support from the 2 very different facets of what had then become "Case tractors" ( original David Brown people & Loyal International Harvester people , both makes had their own unique & specialist connotations ! ) something simply had to give , which is so often the story in anything to do with agriculture , so "D.B." production was ended at Meltham first , then a few years later , "I.H." production was also stopped at Doncaster , this was all very sad , as I have been priviledged to have done factory tours of both plants while they were working , staffed by good - natured , dedicated people at both plants . I,m told that now tractors come from either Italy , or the previously Steyr owned St Valentin plant in Austria , Steyr tractors have an un- questionable quality , for a while the Steyr Company made & badge - engineered tractors for the then re - sold Marshall Tractors company , at that time from Scunthorpe , Humberside , so there were 3 still major manufacturers of tractors in the more easterly region of england , within about 60 miles at most of each other , this was a hornet,s nest waiting to explode , & it did . R.I.P. D.B. , I.H. & Leyland / Marshall .

I was not surprised by the number 1 choice. I have a 1967 990 selectamatic. Tough old beast, never knew how much I relied on it until the rear seal went, and now waiting for new seals to come. The parts guy told me they never made my tractor in 1967, I told him he had better check again. I believe you said they made them from 61-71, but I think they ran until 1980, with a change from Implematic, to selectamatic in 1965. Also a slight change in 1971, when they dropped the selectamatic. They are truly a champ, starting very good even in cold weather.

@@CrazyDEquipment I have my eye on a 1200, which can be bought with loader, and also comes with a 1212, with a cab. $3500, and loader is extra. But think for $4000 it could be bought.. Both run but needs TLC, one works good but looks bad, other works so-so, and looks good.. LOL Problem, it is an 8 hour drive there and another 8 back, and trailer is not heavy enough or long enough for the both so 2 loads.

So many tractor models and brands had such short production runs and low volume production. Factory costs would have been huge trying to spread tooling expense over such limited runs. What were the tractor models that had the highest production rates and lasted more or less unchanged for the longest production year runs? At the top of that list must be Ford N-series, Ferguson TO-series, Allis-Chalmers WD, one or two of the John Deeres. Then it starts to beg the question, of the antique tractors out there, which models are the easiest to get parts for today? Must be Ford N-series and then the others that had high production rates and thus high demand for repair parts.

@jamesbirdsall2910 2 жыл бұрын
most of the tractors used the same parts just slight variations. but there are a lot of mistakes and incorrect info in this video. the most produced tractor was probably the 990 which sold over 54000. and david brown exported 4 out of every 5 tractors made.

I am working on a David Brown 770 Selectomatic I cannot raise the back mower deck to move it. I don't know how to set the levers to make it work, any ideas?
@fredbloggs6181
@fredbloggs6181 8 ай бұрын
It could be the selector lever or taps on the left hand side are set wrong. These give you options between hydraulics,trailer tipper pipe or external services or if that doesn’t solve it it’s more likely a stuck valve in the valve chest which means removing the hydraulic cross shat and the valve chest comes out all as a unit. Not quite as simple as it sounds but not too hard a job

Hi there … informative but some of your information is a little incorrect. 990, 995/995, 1212 and 1412 all had the same 4 cyl engine block. The different horsepower was made up by using different injectors and timing, and with the 1412 a turbo. I believe the same block was then used in the 1290/94, 1390/94 and 1490/94. The 1590/94 and 1690/94 had a 6 cyl Cummins engine. There was a period of time where ZF AMFD’s were used and there I’m not sure who made the front axles for ‘94 series. Now the 1210/12 and 1410/12 may have had a slightly longer stroke also. I would have to check the parts and service manual if my mother still has it. I just wish my brother didn’t trade then in as they were still in excellent nick for there age. I hope this help with your future videos. Cheers.

Two things. Firstly he actually is a New Zealander. Secondly, in addition to the two DB 990s, he now has brought back a DB 25 petrol (i.e. gasoline) fuelled tractor to life. In his usual way this involved attention to long neglected lubrication and the basic defects. All on a modest budget.

my father always ran DB tractors from 1945 ti late 1970`s the only one that gave trouble was a 900 model while row croping brussel spouts the crank broke i was a lad then the local DB dealer replaced the engine free charge with in impressed my dad this would have been late 1950 s he was loyal to DB the first new tractor i drove when i joined my dad was a 1965 DB 880 3cyl we also had DB D2 TWIN cyl air cooled diesel tool bar carrier the tool lift was air and i remember burning my lower leg on the compressor many a time

The 900 was their problem tractor. They did iron out the problems but the reputation of the 900 was shot. They brought forward the introduction of the 950 which was an immensely successful tractor and saved the day

that would be because at that point when they were building those tractors they were actually owned by the same company that owned case

The name case was on the tractor because case owned him so even if they were developed by David Brown engineers that would still make them case in the same way a lot of international stuff was developed after the they were bought out by case it makes the stuff case international it doesn't just make it international

And if you want to get technical David Brown and case were both owned by tentacle so it would actually make them tentacle engines not David Brown or case

DB tractors died because Old Man Brown's son had gotten a taste for London high life and wouldn't come back to filthy sooty Huddersfield so old man had to keep on running it until he was 84 or so. So he sold out. In last year or two of production even Huddersfield town council would not buy them for estate work as they were so unreliable and averaged £1600 a year repairs - plus lots of down time - while MF? averaged £200. Also the factory was old mills in the hills and getting tractors to docks for export was a major expense on each one. THe factory was unionised and had awful quality, attendance and production attitude

Despite the previous comment the workforce was loyal and our tractors were of excellent quality, David Brown was a good employer and looked after his employees, I was there 25 years and enjoyed every minute. The story was that the new assembly line banked the Company, no-one was willing to give backing as we were in a recession, which led to Browns selling out to Tenneco then eventually JI Case took control and, contrary to promises, wound up DBT moving Case production to Doncaster which had the advantage of better road & rail access and nearer to the docks, Meltham is on the Pennine hills reached by steep, narrow roads, its local rail link to the national network being a victim of Beeching cuts thus totally dependant on road transport

@@johnholmes9837 I worked at Browns in 1985-90 and as I say many of the workforce were idle, stupid and had no sense of the competition they faced. Even local town refused to buy DB tractors due to constant breakdowns and high costs compared to other makes! Brown hisself could have financed the modernisation but he knew it would be money down the drain. I saw documentary of him on his Mediterranan terrace and he said workers were useless. I also worked for the chairman of the factory in Heckmondwike where the tank gearboxes were first made.

Old Man Brown had secretly sold most of he DBT shares to Case because he was born in 1904 and by 1969 or so should have handed over to his son but like many business men in the industrial parts of UK he had sent his son to university and the boy had gotten a taste for the good life in clean south of England and refused to come back to learn the tractor business in Huddersfield which in the 50's was a sooty, filthy, dull place with nothing like a social scene he had enjoyed in London. The old film 'Room at the Top' was shot next to Huddersfield and shows how depressing life and work in the northern towns were in those days. Old Man Brown had a farm down south and a placein Monte Carlo and had taken a new young wife and should have gone off to a very nice retirement but had to stay on running the businesses. As his son refused to take any interest in the factories the odl man hoped his grandson woudl step in but he was less suited to the task so old man did a secfret deal with Case and surprised us all by putting up a notice that from the follwoing Monday all the tractors would be branded with CASE name! And it said this was just a marketing exercise and not a sell-out! Then I thnk less than a year later IH tractors became available so Case bought them and owned two factories. IH were new and convenient for transport while DBT were in old cottonmills in the hills. I last saw Old Brown around the factory as a fairly fit 84 year old in late 80s and he died in 1993.

Hardly surprising the impression you got in your 5 years as those were the final years of production and the workforce were being fed lie after lie about Melthams future, to the extent that many were being bused over to Doncaster to help develop that factory which was a strong clue we were doomed, no wonder they were despondent, 1988 it was announced the factory was to close, in the following months unwanted workers were immediately escorted off the premises and periods of redundancy were opened for the rest, during my 25 years I got to all parts of the factory as part of Maintenance and got an entirely different opinion to yours

@@johnholmes9837 I am purchasing my first tractor, a david brown 885 that is still in every day use. I am glad they had been a great company to work for in the past and the employees must have done a hell of a job to create something that is still running reliably in 2023.
