My party encountered a Succubus very early in our campain. It tried to charm me, and I managed to succeed my saving throw with disadvantage and a -1 modifier to my wisdom. Then the party slowed her down so she couldn't escape and killed her in 1 round. The DM was so upset we perfected his succubus.

Just fought a flame skull the other weekend, our paladin did like 30 damage first attack and our aasimar cleric did another 20, warlock peppered it with eldritch blasts and took it out in like two turns. I love using a succubus as the princess in a tower thing where they subtly work their way into the party for a long period of time repeatedly using their charm abilities until several of the weak willed players are practicly fawning over her or all of them than the party after either a betrayal or total submission depending on how it went will serve their new dark master/mistress

I'm going to run a game with a flameskull as the main "villain" You push open the door to find a mess hall or cafeteria with a buffet and a counter in between the eating area and the kitchen. Seated at all the tables are skeletons, lined up at the buffet are skeletons, there are skeletons leaning against a wall next to a sign that says "smoking area" smoking cigars. In the kitchen is a floating skull surrounded by green fire and wearing a chef's hat. The room is full of the sound of rattling bones and chattering teeth, cackling laughter, many voices, and the occasional "Myah!" Upon opening the door the whole room slowly goes silent and every skull turns toward you. The flaming skull goes about it's business in the kitchen for a few seconds before turning around and dropping the spatula it's holding in its mouth. What do you do? *how many skeletons are there?* You start counting them and get to 32 when the flameskull says "what are you standing around for, get them!" Roll initiative. *wait wait, what are they eating?* Mostly broccoli, kale, you know, things that are high in calcium. One of them's rolling a cheese wheel.

Ohh..good point...Then again that might actually be used as great roleplay material. How about instead of just random killing or enslaving the party it will simply make them a deal. They are one of the smartest and wise creaturs in the whole game and their knowledge could be not just useful but even possibly nessesary for some parties. That means that they can help the party but also badly manipulate them to getting them an item capable of making them planeshift and attack the gods somehow...if they would even wish to attack the gods...Why would they? they understand the gods so don't really fear them and seeing that they are litterally immortal what good would killing the gods even do them? If they die they just get revived in the water plane again. Why even bother attempting to attack the gods when the gods don't really hinder them that much? The only thing I could really see them wanting was to become able to walk on land and learn the few secrets up there that they have yet to do. Possibly about the mindflayers that they have yet to understand.

Most of the time the slimes are shoved into their own corners of the dungeon or locked away and let Loose as part of a trap. Though I have introduced a slime to a low level party by having them encounter it midway though dissolving some random monster they found earlier in the dungeon foolish enough to walk into the cubes territory.
@hieronymusnervig8712
@hieronymusnervig8712 5 жыл бұрын
I think they "follow predictable patterns" meaning they have a territory where they are basically just walking back and forth or in a circle, also they are kinda slow. So basically any monster with some intelligence or speed will not get caught and monsters living in different parts of the dungeon aren't affected at all. You can for example implement that by having lots of Goblins on the first floor but for some reason they don't go into the second floor. Maybe the party even chases them and instead of fleeing up/down the stairs they stand their ground; utterly terrified, yet refuse to go enter the cube's lair.

Great video. Rakshasa is up there in my list of deadliest creatures, especially in the hands of a dastardly dm. Along with their spell immunity, they can use planeshift and can possibly force one of your pcs to Carceri. Yeah good luck with leaving that plane. And their other spells and curses allow for them to be a pretty dangerous encounter without the need for powerful base stats. Their flavor is also great too.

The rakshasa is a monster that I still need to delve into. It, the mindflayers, and the gith are creatures that I've never even touched. Can you believe it? Well the rakshasa looks to be the type of multifaceted powerful creatures that I enjoy.

Rakshasa is practically a Succubus on steroids. Sadly however, its either a complete pushover or impossible to deal with, depending on how the DM handles it intelligence to avoid combat and run away from a combat. The moment you can make sure it cannot escape it becomes much less of a threat (as its really weak for its CR if its abilities arent utilized properly).

A well-played rakshasha will get the pcs every time. I had one become a nemesis for the party after surviving its initial encounter with them. Disguised itself, killed someone, disappeared, repeat next week in another form. To be fair to Esper he picked the Oni and the Succubus already. The rakshasha is a variation on these two (really the oni, ogre mage and rakshasha belong to the same concept, along with the Hags; I just call them Faerie Ogres and pick abilities for each individual to suit the encounter).

I recall a party member staying behind with a disguised succubus. Drained his max HP down to 1 and we still managed to rescue him because a wizard had left his familiar behind to watch. I barely managed to get the victim out of the Sucubus's range by purposely taking a hit with an opportunity attack, so that she couldn't use it on the party member with 1 hp when he finally got out. (an attack of 2 damage would have caused instant death because of max hp being 1)

We had a halfing who bought a brothel and when he started losing business he hired the competition. Little did we know they were succubus. Of course we found out eventually, but then the halfing (who was quite literally out of his mind due to a shard of pure chaos being lodged in his brain) decided to give them a pay raise. Shortly after we discovered that all the girls where being replaced by succubuses in disguise and actually had to chase them out before they caused too much chaos in town. It was a close battle, we only managed because several were taken out fairly rapidly (we were around level 12 at the time) most of the ones left kept slipping in and out of the ethereal plane taking cheap shots at us before fleeing.

@NationalDevin
@NationalDevin 6 жыл бұрын
I ran an abolith game once. It was a homebrew campaign that involved two layers of the dungeon. The first layer was essentially a catacomb location where the undead "lived" and the party was technically there for the specified purpose of eliminating a necromancer style character. But throughout the dungeon, you'd see small puddles of water that would look like they were there for the aesthetic, and as such, the party left them largely bothered, with the exception of one of the party members looking into one of a dozen 1x1 squares on the sides of the walls in a torture room, and because I hung cages that were intended to "Drop" down people with the intent to drown them to make undead monsters. However, there was something of a ruse going on here. The catacomb, as these dungeons often are, are left largely unkept, and left in a state of decay, so a lot of the tunnels were carefully collapsed with large work arounds for the abolith to swim around. That room that the prisoners were drowned in, they weren't really intended for the sole purpose of reviving but to also feed the Abolith and one of 3 "Babies" that I had roaming around in various places. So the map played like this, straight path ahead with rooms every so often, water pathway is a near copy but more aesthetically a cave directly underneath. Small tunnels lead from location to location in the water pathway for the babies to get around to collapsed sections, while there was usually a large tunnel for the main Abolith to get around from section to section. There was eventually a large turning point that lead into a large room with a walkway and a collapsed door section on the other side. The party in question took this as a sign, as intended, to go check out the water for another pathway, and they noticed that there was a large group of boulders behind them when they entered the water, but shrugged it off because "It's a water cave, it happens", and they proceeded to swim underwater. However, there was a baby abolith stuck in there from when the opposite side collapsed, trapping it in there and forcing it to feed on the odd undead that wondered in. So first fight goes off, and the Baby Abolith has most of it's powers pulled from it since it's a younger one. So no legendary actions or the like, but nobody passed their int rolls to see what the monster was, so for both the party and the players IRL, it was just "A fish monster". They kill this baby and, while two of them took dmg from oxygen deprivation during this fight, they continued on their way after a short rest. The dungeon continued for awhile, and they cleared rooms of undead, and the occasional living servant or apprentice, though they noticed that the living enemies beyond this room seemed to be carrying some sort of disease that made them retreat to the various water sources or they'd take dmg, causing bouts of panic among some of the lesser servants, and making the party afraid to engage in melee due to fear of catching whatever it was they had, though the ranger who was the party's closest thing to a rogue was thinking that it was already too late, that they had swam in the water and it was already over for them, though they were fine at that moment, but during the fighting of the "Big bad" at the end of the dungeon, the Abolith used the necromancer (Who if you're not aware at this point, was already a slave) to get them to blow their more powerful spells because, to quote them, "It's the final boss battle of the dungeon. If we kill him, the rest of the enemies will just fall apart or retreat." Then it happens, the Necromancer resurrects two large ogres from the waters below, who proceed to smash into the large two pillars holding the room up. The distance was great enough that only the sorcerer and the ranger were able to hit them once each in the three turns it took to break the pillars, which caused everything to collapse on top of itself, but instead of crushing the party outright (Like they fearfully assumed) it brought large bricks of stone down and broke the floor up in the process, causing the entirity of the party down into the depths, where they saw the Abolith and it's two babies come slowly swimming forth from it's "Den" in the back of the large water cave. The party had to do Dex saves every couple of turns to dodge a falling rock or brick, and before you knew it, the Sorc fell to the onslaught of bricks falling upon the party (We roll do the 4d4 stat rolls and he had rolled a 4, dropping it into his Dex) leaving the Ranger, a Fighter, and a Barbarian to do his dirty work, while taking and burying the last 2 health potions under a pile of stone. just because he was being crushed and was underwater, I gave him disad for his life throws. Thus, while the fighter and Barbarian distracted the Abolith, the ranger went to save the sorc and their only healing items (I had warned them about needing a healer, but they just bought healing pots with their starting gold, which the melee and ranger already used at this point). But because of the enslavement spell, the Barbarian ended up going after the fighter, grappling him and trying to drag him down while the two of them took breathing dmg from being deprived of oxygen, and though technically I supposed I am supposed to release them after dmg is taken, I decided that it had to be direct damage, not just dmg from being in an environment type, so this lasted until the Fighter could roll out of it, which took 2 turns. Now, remember the babies at this point, because while the big abolith was whipping the piss out of the fighter, at least until he rolled and crit both of them, the babies went after the ranger. The ranger tried to fight them off, but was eventually overwhelmed and dragged away, leaving the sorc to his last saving throw, which he fails and dies. The barb, smacked out of his stupor, enters a rage and swims towards the Abolith, and the fighter, swimming up towards the surface, struggles as his last breath of air leaves his lungs, and he drowns, his HP going to 0 and having used up his 3 saving rolls in earlier combats (I've never actually looked up this part of the rule, but in my games I have them used up until you take a long rest, which they knew at this point) so he didn't have a chance to save himself. This left the barb, and the ranger,, and to his credit, the ranger broke free from the abolith babies, and even stabbed one to death with his dagger before he too fell to the onslaught of tentacles and oxygen deprivation. This left us with the Barb, who actually got the Abolith down to it's last 5 HP before he was grappled by the two babies, and infected with the disease, but as the sole survivor in the dungeon now void of all it's servants, he was enslaved and sent out into the world as a minion of the Abolith to bring in new talent and food. This lead into an interesting campaign where the players, eager for revenge, took up the role of Mercs that were offered a job by the Barbarian to help him clear out a dungeon, and while they played nice and let him lead them to their own trap, knowing all the well what was going on, they eventually decided to murder him during one of the battles he had low health in, because the other servants he lured to enslavement would attack him like any other to keep up the illusion, and while the attack was successful, the dmg to kill him was not. His cover blown, he retreated back into the depths of the dungeon, and I'll leave this story at that, because that's a story of it;s own to tell.

the jello cube is the first thing i killed a PC with, so i can see it, especially with a crew who doesn't check for that kind of thing. the players were maybe level 5 at the time, but the body was too badly dissolved to be revivable when they brought it down - it took the body to the bone in seconds. it only did lethal with help from the wizard actually. it KO'd the guy with a smack, the wizard cast a fire spell, injuring the guy, then the cube tagged, and engulfed him - 3 death saving throws from damage procs, that is lethal. flameskull remind me of an enemy in doom, those things are a pain to deal with, mostly because they usually dont take long to reach you, and hurt if they do. succubus is actually something i am considering building a character off of(Evelynn from League of Legends basically). though this character would just ANNIHILATE you once you are alone with her, rather than lock out your mind and drain you physically. i have DM'd once, and in that campaign, some of the creatures i did the best using were assassins, either hit-and-run or ambush style attacks. i usually had them in small "hit squads", so 1 would cast silence, from a range to avoid notice from the party, and a second would cast an illusion in the region to make it appear to anyone other than the target that nothing was wrong. the third, and any others present, would anihilate the targets health bar, potentially to 0 or outright killing them before they can even try to break free of the grapple from behind. this particular example was targeting a wizard who had roamed to the edge of a forest clearing at night, after the party fought a pack of drow, without alerting his party to the sorceress he had seen in the forest.

I'd put Pit Fiends pretty high on a list like this, due to not only being a super-aggressive glasscannon, but also being very intelligent and having high mobility, thus being able to focus down casters and healers first, whilst staying out of range of powerful melee characters like Barbarians and Monks.

Much like the Vampire, I like to use the Succubus as more of a plot event, than a simple confrontation. Their strengths come into play through their devious plotting, not their battle abilities. Again, much like the Vampire, once you know what you are dealing with, with this temptress, the fight can become anti-climatic. They aren't built for slugging it out. I find using Green Hags and even Night Hags with this strategy, far more engaging for the players as well. Fun list Esper! Thanks. :)

In my first session, we encountered a somewhat intelligent cube that was serving the big bad of the dungeon. My character is a bard, so my DM said I can try to convince it to leave. I had a casual conversation with it about it’s preferred meal of children and convinced it that it would get better meals outside. They was so surprised that I had decided to avoid a fight. We 'accidently' summoned a pyramid containing a Mummy Lord in the middle of our home town. We actually had no idea how to permenently kill the thing at the time, after it came back to life we just knew we where in over our heads. Warlock ended up convicing the mummy to move to a nearby crypt we previously cleared. Added the pyramid as a improptu storage facility for the mage school it had partially destroyed in the summoning process. Our DM was impressed that day to say the least.

I find this list points out one of 5th editions primary flaws. At higher tiers its so dang hard to kill pc's. It can feel like you only encounter any real danger in the first two tiers, then it's just a dm struggling to deal with (for instance in my current tier 4 group) 2 lvl 20 wizards with simulacrums, lvl 20 barbarian, lvl 20 trickster rogue, lvl 20 shadow monk, lvl 20 warlock/paly and my lvl 19 life cleric. Esper, I'm not gonna argue that all these creatures are deadly but I have some honorable mentions. the Quickling is a challenge rating 1 fey that has a movement speed of 120 feet and a Dexterity bonus of +6, not to mention an ability called blur movement where unless the Quickling is restrained or incapacitated, every attack against it is at disadvantage. It's multiattack is three dagger attacks Which is a minimum of 7 damage, for a lot of spellcasters who may have like 6-10 base health at level 1, this is a deadly encounter if it goes for them. The Intellect Devourer is a challenge rating 2 aberration that has resistance to nonmagical bludgeoning piercing and slashing damage, and it's Devour Intellect attack can wreck most frontline fighters who have intelligence as a dump stat and paired with it's Body Thief attack, It not only kills that character but takes over his body and fights the party with it unless that guy is protected with a protection from good and evil spell.

Aah, the Will-o-wisps... This brings back memories... We were investigating a ancient temple in a swamp and were dealing with the usual stuff just fine. You know, traps, enchanted statues etc. The "final boss" of the temple was a big scary demon-vampire(or smth, we didn't roll high enough to determine what exactly the creature was), but we kicked his butt with no problems. Soo... our DM decided to put us against a few will-o-wispous when we got out of the temple, so that "you don't get bored" :D Oh maaan, 3 wisps kicked our butts to the moon and back :D :D :D The vampire-demon, left us on almost full HP and with most of our spells, but the wisps killed our paladin and almost killed my character(a fighter variant) too :D :D :D You just ... can't ... hit ... these things *#%^@ !!! You just can't! :D It was fun :D :D :D

long time since i've played ADD and it was the second edition, so here some memories from the lost ages from planescape, basically any yugoloth, tana'ri or baatezu, with there ability to teleport without error at will, then usually a large battery of spell and the intelligence to make them work. And the gate ability....oooohohohh, the gate ability....... The succubus was one of them. the aasimon solar was the best of all (the extraplanar creatures), with the ability to cast wish on a daily or weekly basis; one of my favorite, his bow was able to shoot arrows of slaying and the solar was choosing which type of creature it will slay, why choose when you can do everything hé ;) . The good news was he is with the nice side, the bad news: they could be insane or a little too fanatic.... And if i am correct, the solar was also able to cast the sixth lvl priest spell heal each round, unlimited number of use. To be honest he was considered as an entity on the doorstep to demigod or god ascension. from dark sun: the undead which were all unique, so players were never able to predict what will happening. the dragon of tyr.... designed to be the threat of an entire continent, sorcer-kings include: regen, mag resist, insane damage, two action per round (two cast, melee plus spell, spell plus psionic etc) , mag/ psy lvl 30, special spell combining psionic and magic, each time he cast a spell it was damaging player (not counting the spell effect), it was 1d6 perlevel of spell cast i think etc etc... The rampaging brute and he was not your friend.

Tangled with a flame skull and an oni in one of my campaigns. The DM cut us some slack on the flame skull and weakened it saying it was newly formed from an evil wizard we had recently killed and thus didn’t have its full abilities. With the oni, we made our own luck by conning its orc allies into turning on it. It slaughtered all but one of them while they party finished it off from a distance. We then befriended the surviving orc.

You know, I can't disagree with any of the choices, but it seems odd that Beholder was excluded. I suppose it's had its place in so many Top 10 Lists already that it didn't necessarily *need* to be here, especially since by the time PCs will be facing one, they should have enough tools at their disposal to not be completely demolished.

Ran into a group of 3 flameskulls in a recent dungeon. Party hadn't fought any before, and we thought "They're just a bunch of flying skulls, can't be that bad" Well, we still kept our wits about. They rolled low into initiative, and my party killed one of them on turn one. My monk hit another one with stunning strike. The final flameskull proceeded to cast fireball, which one-shot 3 members of the party. My DM is currently using the wonky (and very unforgiving) D100 death chart instead of the death saves, and my character lost all fingers on the right hand. Thank god we had a druid with greater restoration.

Version 3.0/3.5: Shadow Dragon. Toss in the Epic Handbook for the PCs. Use dragon age advancement for an appropriate CR. The party leader was a multiclass, quite (over-)confident, but had rather earned it, having earned his way up from 5th to 28th, and successfully leading his small but powerful band to victory after victory. On the other side, I used the *original* style breath weapon of the Monster Manual 2 Shadow Dragon, *increased* by it's advancement. At first the party could only sense that something was nearby; then they heard small sounds--rustles in the wind [over its wings], etc. It used its shadow & illusion magics to enhance the tension. They *almost* saw it too late--just 2 dim gray orbs in the darkness. The group was attacked from the darkness with multiple spells--only the leader had seen the eyes--and their defenses faltered; then the leader openly challenged the dragon, and as it turned to face him, used an item to cast a Prismatic Sphere around himself! He did not know just how good a defense this was, as a light-based spell. After a couple of rounds he stuck his head out [caster unharmed by own Sphere]...and the patiently waiting dragon...*breathed*. What followed was ever-increasing panic: for those who don't know the original breath weapon did *HD/LEVEL* DAMAGE! Normally 1d4 (bad enough), but with the advancement 2d8!! The first hit took 3 levels--ouch!, but not horrible, still 25th effective level. While trying to figure out how to get out of his safe *prison* , stuck his head out again to attack [missiles don't pass through the Sphere, nor do spells], and was rewarded with...*7 MORE LEVELS OF DAMAGE!!!* The now (temporarily) *18th* level character fled at full speed, barely gathering the tattered remnants of his desperately concealed party, and upon eventually returning to the general area, avoided that specific location like a deadly plague.

And? One thing I sure would do if running a game as a DM, would be to sprinkle changes into how the monsters work. At least a tiny bit. Why? For I would not like that people use their knowledge from other games, injecting it into the characters who would not know these things. "Oh its fine for me to get turned into a statue if it means that we win this battle. We got time, and I will turn back in a day. I will take this one for the team" Well... >.> First if someone said anything like that, or just acted. I would ask them to roll a d20. If they get a good score, perhaps they would have heard. If not... well now you would have to find some way to turn people back if it is even possible. Or that character is lost. >.> I see the base stuff as advice and suggestions. And if it may very well be worth while to change things up. Are you in the base d&d world? Or one that you GM made? At the very least if its something they made. This is a different world. Why would the monsters be exactly the same?

I once nearly wiped out an entire party of high level characters by using a simple team up of one banshee and one ghost. Both used their fear abilities and caused more than half of 8 person party failed by rolling a total of 6 on one or both of the abilities. Those that didn’t run away we’re having trouble hitting the undead, due to their immunity to nonmagical damage. Even the level 18 bard ran away and was out of sight so he couldn’t hear the party members. Even after the Paladin caused the ghost to flee due to turn undead, she fell soon after to the wail of the banshee.

so i know just how deadly oni can be, i was playing a 12th level 5e campain and there were not one but 5-6 in one area; keep in mind there were four players we had a fighter, a warlock, a ranger, and my character (whom was a lvl 10 rouge[assassin], a level 1 druid, and a level one cleric as ironiclly i designed this character so they could speak any language and still be useful in combat) the only one who was not hit/damaged was me as i had hid behind a door and used sneak attack on every attack i could i should also state we had quite a few magic items due to how are designed this campain he point is it took a party of 12 level characters almost an entire session to take out 4 oni granted half way through a magi oni showed up

A lich is deadly, but not in the way these creatures are. These creatures have a relatively low CR, but can easily kill a PC.
