Nah, it already takes talent to play death metal. A lot are pretty known and ofc skilled. But if they were to be tiered into categories then most aren't gonna fall under that. Lord Marco, John Longstreth and Jamie Saint Merat are some of the ones to definitely make it tho ;)

Pete "The Commando" Sandval is just an honorable mention?? He is THE godfather of death metal drumming...The biggest influence of all etreme metal drummers. Pete Sandoval,Gene Hoglan and Sean Reinert (Rest in Peace,Sean...) They are the holy trinity of Death Metal drumming.

EXACTLY!!! PETE SANDOVAL WAS AND STILL IS THE SHIT!!

The accident that destroyed the original Decapitated was so tragic. They were literal children when their first album came out. It'd be insane to think how far they'd push death metal if they were able to develop their sound and techniques. That being said, Hoglan will always be my top 1. The work he did with Death and SYL can't be understated, and the fact that he's still blasting eardrums today is testament to his longevity and timelessness.
@dreammachine864 жыл бұрын
Damn what John Longstreth said at the end about respecting the technique choices other players use because what makes playing music interesting is that we all do it a bit differently is hugely inspirational to me. I'm a drummer who's been playing for 10 years now and just started trying to learn guitar also but I still see myself at the start of my journey on drums too as there is so much to learn, and experience to get - in techniques and with playing in a live setting which isn't something I have much experience in, at least on a traditional drum kit. I can spend hours on KZfaq watching so many other drummers that are far better and skilled than I am, some almost half my age which can be disillusioning especially with genres like metal where technical playing is really admired. But hearing a successful pro musician saying that it's OK, whatever your doing it's your unique way of doing it that makes it interesting really inspires me to keep going, learning, practicing and writing music and hopefully one day I can be in that position to inspire someone else.
@papalazzzaru4 жыл бұрын
35 years in and I learn stuff I'd never heard of every day! It's a lifelong journey and I totally get where the top musicians are coming from when they humbly admit they don't consider themselves as masters of anything. I still consider myself a beginner!
@enkienkieaea2 жыл бұрын
That is so true, for a metal or rock musician is very important to listen to all or other type of music, so you can get and bring more and new ideas to your music and playing

It’s beyond mind blowing to see him play, it’s like watching a super human, I’m sure if you play drums you can comprehend it better. To be honest, I don't think Paoli is the best drummer in the bands that he has been a part of. Fleshgod and Hour of Penance came up together and to me, Mauro Mercurio was the most interesting of the bunch. Paoli did vocals while Mauro did drums on "Paradogma", which was the best album between those bands.

Jaime Saint Merat deserves more than just a honorable mention. He approach drum work as a kind of poetry (while keeping extreme, of course). So good you talked about Longstreth - a perfect example of a musician who most of time have to be a drum machine, but still keeps his talent alive. Well, he said the exact thing here.

Very cool. Hoglan and Reinert always hold up high on my list because of what Death meant to me. I saw Archspire open for Origin in a club in NJ, in front of an audience of like 10 people plus the other opening bands a couple years ago. Jamie St. Merat of Ulcerate should absolutely have a spot in these videos. His drumming is so unique and really adds this incredible dimension to Ulcerate’s sound. His speed and technicality are in the same league as most of these guys, but his cymbal work and tom fills are unbelievable. For me, he is one of those musicians where you can instantly recognize their style. Mike Portnoy is a great example of that. He developed this sound with Dream Theater that was so iconic. That is more important to me than anything having to do with technical prowess. Does that make sense to anybody? It seems a little convoluted as I thinking about it more.
@pnigalion56754 жыл бұрын
Jordan Calixto I absolutely agree, he should have gotten a spot, because I think he’s the best drummer in the whole genre

Yup. 100% agree. I got to see them play in Los Angeles 3 years ago. I've been a drummer for 20 years and it takes a lot for a drummer to really impress me. His level of dynamics, cymbal work, creativity, feeling, intensity, speed etc really make him such a great musical drummer. He plays with a lot of passion. And his drums and choices of cymbals sound incredible. Very warm natural sounding drums which is often lacking in this genre.

“Simply put him way above any death Metal Drummer, period.” You must not be a musician to say something like that. John Longstreth, Lord Marco, Spencer Prewitt, Dave McGraw, etc can play anything Sean can, PERIOD. Music isn’t a competition and people like you are so irritating who try to make it that. It’s music so just stfu and listen to it. There is a reason John got #1 is because the stuff John plays is very very hard to replicate especially what he does in Origin. I’ve been playing drums for 27 years and Sean’s material isn’t that difficult but Johns material, Holy Mountain Lion 💩 is it tough. His technicality is amazing. Sean was a great inspirational drummer who I have mad respect for but his material technically compared to Johns is on a different level. Both are awesome though. Im a big fan of both.

Paul Bostaph from Slayer, and Nick Barker from Dimmu Borgir, cradle of filth, Gorboroth and Immortal too, but its imposible to mention just one there are many old and new that are great, some of them for one thing other's for another. To play death metal professionally, you have to be a great drummer, be in good health, practice a lot, and exercise a lot. This music is very exhausting and demanding when you do it as your profession. But I agree with your list in a way. I only think you should put Pete Sandoval in your main list. He was the inspiration for most of the younger drummers, for speed, technique, acuracy and creativity. He was one, if not the best death metal drummer. Most of the drummers at that time, tried to copy and learn his own style. Igor Cavalera, kind of was missing here too. But great job! 1 of the best tops of musicians I have seen...
