The coolest thing about Misunderstood is how the solo was made. John Petrucci wrote the solo, played it, then reversed the recording. He then learned how to play it backwards and recorded himself playing it backwards. He then reversed that recording again and put that final distorted version into the song. The final product was the original solo, but it sounds so weird and distorted because of all of the reversing.

@animal1439
@animal1439 5 жыл бұрын
@@ls02011 The self-titled is under-rated in general, I personally far prefer Illumination Theory over Octavarium. I just feel like Octavarium goes too far with the atmospheric spaces which makes certain parts of the song feel empty. Furthermore, due to these "empty spaces" the song always fails to grab my attention so I always feel completely disengaged when listening to it for the entire 24 minute runtime. But to each their own I guess.

Octavarium’s my favorite song of all time. It’s the whole reason why I wanted to become a musician and study music to the point where my main objective is to write a song that makes me feel the same way that all the movements in Octavarium made me feel. Just an all round awesome song. 5- The Glass Prison: One of the heavier dream theater songs, sounds fantastic. 4- On the Backs of Angels: A masterpiece, cream of the crop when it comes to song writing. 3- Under a Glass Moon: a classic, one of the best dream theater solos period. 2- Panic Attack: Definitely one of my favourite songs, a total classic that captures the essence of a panic attack.... Oh and with a kick ass solo. 1- Octavarium: Self explanatory, incredible song.

Metropolis pt 1, I like the instumental sections. 4. In The Presence of The Enemy, it has Castlevania vibe! Love it. 3. Learning to Live, this song sum up how I see the world around me and my position within the world itself, "I look at the world but see no understanding... I begging you from a bottom of my heart to shows me understanding." 2. Octavarium, a masterpiece but for me the magic is wear off if I listening to it daily. 1. Mad respect for including The Best of Times. It’s arguably the most emotional song in their entire catalog. Very cool list. Maybe I'll give mine. - 10. The Glass Prison My favorite song from the Twelve Step Suite. I think it's a great opener and the bass intro is one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard. 9. The Ministry of Lost Souls I agree with you on pretty much every point. The chorus is really cool. 8. The Spirit Carries On I'm a member of the church of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints and I think this song perfectly describes my idea of the afterlife. Also I can play most of it which I can't say for every DT song lol 7. Illumination Theory This song has such a cool name tbh. It's not my favorite epic by the band, but it has some really cool stuff. I love the grit LaBrie adds to his voice on this one. 6. The Count of Tuscany This has my favorite DT chorus on it. Also the outro is super cool. 5. Panic Attack That bass. Need I say more? Also this was the first DT song I heard. 4. On The Backs Of Angels Pull Me Under 2 but it's better this time 3. Pale Blue Dot This song has the atmosphere I thought of when I thought of Dream Theater, at least before I got into them. That solo/Interlude after the choruses is one of my favorite Petrucci guitar parts. 2. Metropolis: Pt 1, The Miracle and the Sleeper This was my favorite for a while. Vocals are spot on. Amazing performance by the rest of the band too. 1. Octavarium It's cliche, I know. I just love this song. It builds so beautifully. Probably my favorite song, just ever. - Honorable Mentions 20. The Root of All Evil 19. The Enemy Inside 18. In The Name of God 17. Overture 1928/Strang Deja Vu 16. Home 15. As I Am 14. Lost Not Forgotten 13. Bridges In The Sky 12. 6:00 11. The Dance Of Eternity

I'd say Voices is my favorite DT song. My dad would talk about Awake ad nauseam, and for good reason. This is one of many albums I grew up listening to and, to this day, Voices remains one of my all-time favorite songs. The dynamics within the song create an amazing atmosphere, the vocals are fantastic, some of James' best in terms of expression, the synths sound much better than on their later work (it's a huge gripe of mine with Metropolis Pt. 2, though I still love that album to death), the lyrics (while definitely jarring) are super fucking awesome. My dad would drive around with me and my brother and he'd explain lyrics in songs and have us think about what they mean. He did this with Operation: Mindcrime and Awake, and it helped me tremendously in appreciating great writing, especially within songs. Voices in particular is a song that I've never stopped listening to. I somehow still find something new in it that makes me love it even more after hearing it for almost all my life (for context, my earliest memory of this song is when I was 5, and I'm now 20). This song still gives me chills, and remains to be my favorite from DT. Thank you for coming to my TedTalk.

In the Name of God 1. In the name of God ok but being serious the way the verse riff just hits like a ten ton truck straight to the face every time it kicks in, that badass, lurching bass buildup into the fucking insane harmony section, the overall eastern sound and vibe just are about as close as possible to perfection as we are getting. at least for me. also the fact the song, despite being a 14 minute epic, keeps this consistent momentum without ever feeling like a drag is just a perfect display of songwriting mastery

I've had this idea in my mind for awhile, didn't know where it came from but it was there, and I liked it a lot. I didnt listen to a dramatic turn of events much, just a few times when I first found out about them (partially because of you!). That idea actually turns out to be on the backs of Angel's intro, I had never even given a thought to that being this song, but oh my god I now realise just how much I LOVE it! I think that has gotten me even more into DT. Dont get me wrong, I fucking love DT but I thought I had heard all good there was to hear with the universally accepted "good" albums but I'll definitely have to give some of the underdogs a listen again. Thank you for getting me more into prog, it's an amazing place to be. I see how much you love opeth, so I've been trying to listen to that too. I originally was turned off by the more guttural vocals but I think I've come more to just appreciate the music and the nuance now. They are all extremely good musicians and I certainly will listen to more. Thank you Mike, you've broadened my horizons multiple times now and hopefully more in the future. Rock on dude 🤘

Yep. I feel you right there. It's so hard to choose. That's why I don't have a Top 10 DT songs list (and I don't even know if that's a bad thing). It's because everytime I hear some DT songs, my emotions and my conclusions go different every day, even right now. I always listen to any DT albums, from start to finish, and at the end of the day, I still get to feel that kind of satisfaction. So my epic conclusion is, Dream Theater is one of the greatest bands, for me, that exist today, not only because of the technical or emotional aspects of their songs, but because of their 'colorful' (if you may) catalogue that you can dive into. 😊

I love that you named Misunderstood in this list. I don't find a lot of people who appreciate this song the way I do. I've never considered a top 10 of my favorite DT songs, so I'm not sure if it would end up on there, but I love the shit out of that song. Perhaps more surprising, however, is how many of their later albums you've picked from. Seems a lot of people are stuck on a select few older ones.

Imho the intro to Octavarium could not be any shorter. It sets up many different melodies that happen to consist of long notes and long phrases, and it also needs to do that in kind of a sneaky way, as you almost don't realize that many melodies throughout the piece have already been presented - they just click right into place for you and you don't really understand why. Plus, it needs to fade in from silence, so I think it's actually just the right length.

Man, my own list would be vastly different, in no small part because I have not listened to much of what DT released after Octavarium. I definitely will have to rectify that and fill in these gaps. Guess this list is a good place to start. :) I'd definitely have Endless Sacrifice somewhere in my top 3 (despite it going a little overboard with the wankery lol) but that's because it's a very personal song to me.

Also, I wanted to point out how you included Metropolis and Outcry, which according to the side by side analysis of IAW and ADTOE, are each other's counterparts in the same way that On the Backs of Angels is to Pull Me Under. Also, it'd be cool to have a video of your opinion on that whole fiasco, the similarities between ADTOE and IAW, and how each song is structured and how they mirror each other.
