That's because it's an e-bike, a pedal bike with a motor. It's not an electric motorcycle. Why? You don't need a license or insurance etc. It's just a standard pedal bike. Despite this, they can usually do more than double that speed. They're simply limited to comply with regulations.

Now certainly seems like the time when e-motorbikes are starting to address the mass market. The closest yet to matching product to market would have to be Zero. A lot of the bikes shown here are styled on the current look of conventional sports ICE bikes. I thing the next 18 months will prove the market demand for e-motorcycles made with the standard seat posture can go 100 miles / 160 kms on a single charge has LED lights (Zeros don’t yet!) and has a base price point around $4500 and with extras up to $6000 (£5000 or €5500). Meanwhile I’ll wait and keep watching - as I continue to get about town on my 2000watt hub motor e-mountain-bike - top speed 36 mph range 10 to 16 miles - cost 3 years ago £1500.

I wonder how much it would cost if I was to just take this old blown up GSXR and put a fork truck motor on it with a couple deep cycle dry cell marine batteries? The Yale fork truck weighs 5000 lbs compared to a 600 lb GSXR and the fork truck would go 20 mph forward and reverse. You could do a lot with gearing the chain and sprockets.

Price and range are the main concerns for me. Top speed doesn't have to be massive- I don't want to exceed the speed limit on a bike. If it maxes out at 65 or 70 I'm good, I just want to be able to cruise comfortably at 45 or 55 most of the time while having the capability to go a little faster if need be. The range needs to be over 100 miles for sure, 200 would be the long term goal, and the price needs to be less than 10k in order to interest me. I could go with less speed and range up to a point if the price is more like 5k. If you look at something like the Harley electric bike, that is a well put together machine that already has the type of performance I'm looking for- but I won't spend 30k on it. No way. It's coming along though, and at some point there's going to be a breakthrough model that performs well and is priced within the range that I'm willing to pay.
