John, based on the above, I dipped my toe into Imperium: Classics. Played 4 games, won 2, lost 2. Although the mechanics look complicated, I though they were a lot easier than expected. The AI works smoothly, but I still haven't bottomed out the deck management. I thought I was doing well in my 2nd outing and got hammered, the wins have been close whilst I thought I was hammering the bot. Probably well balanced then. Have fun, stay safe

Beautiful list. I'm more convinced now to invest on some of the title that I kind of doubt or was super surprised that they cater well for brilliant solo gaming such as 1862, Spirit Island, Tekhenu and Gaia Project. Also, I think Vital Lacerda programmed his games best at 3 players, the sweetest spot mostly for his titles, but what Kanban EV shines foe soloing is thanks ro David Turczi himself. I'm even glad he did the solo version for Weather Machine. No surprisw there other David Turczi titles in your list too 😄. Larely I've been very conscious of buying board games. I always ensure that they have solo experience as my back up plan because I can't always invite people to play. I'm glad you felt the same for Fields of Arle. That game just had a special place in my heart. I still have yet to get A Feast for Odin though 😅. Mage Knigt still is the best, but I wouldn't label as "essential" solo board game in my collection. LOTR LCG is behind it as well but then again not essential. Marvel Champions is way accessible, hence essential for anyone ensuring a solo board gaming experience. Thanks for the list! Subscribed ❤.

1862 Railway Mania is so good. I've played it 6 times so far, and my highest score was $8787 - so close to the 'winning' $9k, and yet so far! It's one of the few games where I can play for 3-4 hours and just don't feel the time going by at all. Excellent, under-appreciated gem in my opinion.

Hi John. Chris of Carpo Farm here. I am collecting a set of games to play for the remainder of my retirement, which may be 25 years! I seem to like heavier games, and solo at least optional is a must. Space/scifi is nearly a must. So far: Gaia Project, Anachrony, This War of Mine, ISS Vanguard, Stars of Akarios, Frostpunk, Hadrians Wall, Warp's Edge, Under Falling Skies, Star Wars: Outer Rim, Pulsar 2849. Solar 175, and Leaving Earth. I have come close to my limit, and all games include the expansions with only a few KS components missing. Rubble Die. as an example. I have room for one more and future expansions for the games I have. Suggestion? Note that I looked at Stellar Horizons and High Frontier 4 All but the rulebooks sound iffy.
@JohnLaRuffa
@JohnLaRuffa Жыл бұрын
High Frontier 4 All is a very dense game to learn and is probably like playing Leaving Earth on steroids but with some random elements in the way the cards come up. It is great, but you should read the rules first before buying it if you are tempted to go that way. And by read, I mean skim them and see if you are willing to study them and watch playthrough videos for several hours before embarking on your first game. I still have it in my collection because it truly is a unique and interesting experience, but not one that works “4 all” as it says. Have you looked at Skymines (if you like Eurogames) or Star Trek: Frontiers if you want a Mage Knight experience in space which is slightly more forgiving than Mage Knight? Space Alert also presents a very strong real-time challenge solo. Finally, Black Angel is very good from a solo perspective. You ask a tough question, but I hope a couple of these recommendations may fit the bill. Good luck and let me know what you decide. P.S. You might also like SpaceCorp with the Ventures expansion tossed in for asymmetric powers.

Very interested in Legacy of Yu as well. Sadly missed the campaign which was stupid. A lot on my plate lately with the kids and the house and my health. Just slipped through the cracks. I like Viticulture a lot. Even though it has it's mean moments (a bit similar to those in Dune: Imperium), it plays so nice and calm and pretty. Just a really nice game that's requires just enough brains to master but without the sweat and the tears, without malice and spite. Beautiful.

First time watcher of the channel here. I enjoyed you list very much. In terms of my collection there is some similarity although you are more on the euro-y part of the spectrum with limited dice (my favourite games are Too Many Bones and Core Space). For example I have Eldritch Horror rather than Arkham, my Turczi is Excavation Earth, my LCG is LotR:LCG, Spirit Island and Gaia Project are much played, and 1862 sits on the shelf. I would note that almost all of your essentials are longer games (although I haven't played Tekhenu), and it would be great to get a top 10 games played in less than an hour.

Core Space is a fantastic game that sadly way too few people know. Love it. It's not for everyone. Some find it too "tabletopy". I wish I could play it more often. Haven't played First Born yet. I really like Excavation Earth. Don't know why some don't. It's not your typical Turczi, but that doesn't bother me in the least. Imperium wasn't what we were used to by Turczi either and it is still great. Try Tekhenu. It will melt your brain in the first game, but when the rules and mechanisms have settled in, it's awesome.

This was the first video of yours that I have seen and it was well done. You should offer your services to Dice tower, that should give you pretty good publicity. I liked this list because most "solo games" lists I see are solo only games or 15 minutes games. This list is full of very deep games and I love that. Gaia is my favorite solo game ever, but not a lot of people recognize that.
@JohnLaRuffa
@JohnLaRuffa Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the suggestion. I know the Dice Tower has a couple of people who do solo only reviews, so I never approached them. I would Ike the publicity, but I am happy doing my own thing because I am straight and to the point. No music, intros, fancy stuff. Just straight solo talk. That helps me make videos much more frequently and gets my points across fast. As for the list, I made it just for that reason. Some folks have asked for a solo list of shorter, lighter games and I will put that video together very soon. But for this list, I looked right into my heart and said what do I love best about this hobby for solo purposes. After spending probably too much time thinking about it, I came up with these 10. Hi! Visiting your channel for the first time. Took the time to read the comments as well, as you probably noticed. Great video, nice list. I really like all the games you are talking about here (except 1862, haven't experienced that one yet. In my defence, I'm not that into train themed games and I wouldn't even know where to buy this game where I live). You're making a lot of great points. How many hours I've spend hovering over the board of Fields of Arle. Many of the Rosenberg Euro games. If I had to choose between Agricola, Caverna, Fields of Arle, Nusfjord, Glass Road, Hallertau, A Feast For Odin, Le Havre... all those tasty Rosenberg Euros sitting on the shelves behind me.... I'd probably choose Agricola for the sentimental value. Was my first Rosenberg. If I had to make a list like that, the first three would probably be Mage Knight, Mage Knight and.... Mage Knight. ;) And Robinson Crusoe would definitely be on my list, as it was the first heavier game I learned to play solo before I played it with others. A lot of hours some years ago went into that game. Spirit Island and Imperium (Legends/Classics) are games one could play solo for a year and still learn and discover new things, combinations, winning tactics... Just amazing to me, how a designer can come up with a game like that. Btw, the game you were looking for, the predecessor to Gaia Project: Terra Mystica. And good news for you, in case you didn't know yet: There is an Automa Solo Box out now for Terra Mystica. It's quite expensive but it's said to be really well made and really good.

Uh, and I almost forgot, I really enjoy good (solo) Crawlers or Skirmishers. Be it Sword & Sorcery, Cthulhu: Death May Die, Core Space or Nemesis. Love em. And not to be underestimated are the solo modes of Yedo and Everdell. They work really well. Clinic works very well and is fun solo, too, but sadly very limited compared to multi player. But some of my best solo experiences ever were with Dawn of the Zeds. If you can stomach the theme (zombies overrunning a small town), this is an incredible game. You lose far more often than you win, but it's so mean and messy and funny, sometimes it's so very close or so thrilling and sometimes you just get overrun, a masterpiece of cinematic board gaming. After every game, you have a story to tell. It's not an easy game, there are lot of rules and components, but once it flows, it's a beast.

So much to comment on with your comments above. I totally agree with your points on some of the great games you point out. All of them I have played in many of them are in my collection. It took me so long to make the top 10 video because I really had a tough time making the choices I did. That being said, the only one that I struggle with on your list is Mage Knight because of how difficult it is to remember how to play that game over a longer period of time. While I do not have a video on games for younger kids of that age, I do have plenty of experience in teaching games to my kids as they went through that of their life. Some games I would recommend depend on the types of things, your son, and you like in playing a game. I have found that my family has really enjoyed a variety of role and right games out there, which are fairly easy to understand, and easy to play. For instance, Railroad Ink is a family favorite, as is Ganz Von Clever (spelling ?). Ticket to Ride people like for that age. Sansuci (spelling again?) is another tile laying game that is perfect for that age group. Finally some cooperative games like Forbidden Sands and Pandemic: The Cure were a big hit. I hope that helps!

I tend to stay away from longer games, especially ones where a few poor early decisions means that you have 2-3 hours of minimising the size of your loss. I found that Spirit Island is a pure logic game which once you've unlocked the puzzle becomes routine. In my opinion you have to have the Branch and Claw expansion which adds variability to give the game replayability. I've played SI 10 times, I've played SI with B&C over 150 times solo. I've also ditched the physical version and do it via the app. Interested to try Imperium: Classics or Legends. Good suggestion, thanks, good job it is relatively cheap. I've tended to stay away from games that have a large footprint and/or have long setup times. Tried Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion, can't understand what all the fuss is about, too long to setup and just plain boring as a solo experience. Would never want the overhead of it's bigger brother. Kanban EV looked at it but decided that the mechanics just looked like following a whole host of instructions. Have Friday but find it is too repetitive, once you have sussed the optimised win process it is just a card draw. So where do I spend my time in solo. Under Falling Skies, a campaign game that can easily be replayed and a monthly challenge on BGG. Century: Golem Edition, fan expansion solo game. Merchants Cove plays well solo but you need Secret Stash to give it longevity ( has a huge footprint but games packaging makes it easy to setup). Pandemic again does well solo, based on Forbidden Island which ironically I detest. Tiny Epic Galaxies - Blast Off works well with a small footprint and easy to carry around and easy as a multiplayer game. With a larger footprint Viscounts of the West Kingdom does well (has a specially designed solo AI), haven't found the need to add the expansions in yet, always a good sign for replayability. It's sibling Architects of the West Kingdom gets less love from me but still ok. 7 Wonder Duel with the official solo print and play expansion (it was free during Covid) gets a lot of love from me. In search of Planet X is a pure logic game that if I'm in the mood I'll play but I don't find it that engaging. It is better as a competitive experience. If I think I'm going to spend 30 minutes on my own somewhere I'll take 7 Wonders/ Tiny Epic Galaxies/ Century Golem just to setup and run through. As an off the wall and not really a board game but as a solo minaitures RPG, Five Parsecs from Home (Mordiphius) occupies a lot of my time. I have become invested on the crew of the Gillibrand (their ship) and their travels through the Ereran System as they work for various corporations picking up enemies on the way. Great game that needs standees or miniatures and some imagination. Needs space and time (two things I moaned about earlier but I found this is worth it!!) I'm interested if you do a short solo games top 10. Thanks for the vid

@@JohnLaRuffa No, within their genre Tekhenu and Teotihuacan are quite different, I agree. And in my opinion, Tekhenu is the superior game. Carnegie is a very different animal again. Carnegie is what I imagine Euro Games could look like if they had been invented by an American designer (even though Georges is from Belgium). I really like it. It's less stiff and dusty as many other Euros but at the same time holds dear many of the typical principles (for example the need to choose your expertise because you just couldn't possibly manage to optimize everything in the time given). Even though it is a breath of fresh air, it still gives you this beautiful old school Euro Game feeling of "Can't I please please please have two more rounds? Marvel plays similar to Arkham minus the map, acts, sanity, chaos bag, and flavor text. Your hero fights the boss, he hits you for damage, you hit him for damage. You draw encounter cards like in Arkham which bring out minions, add threat (similar to doom) to the scenario, or hurt you in other ways. If you get low on health you can switch to your alter ego to heal and the boss doesn't hit you for damage anymore, but he adds more threat (doom) to the scenario instead. So it's basically a balancing act of removing threat before it builds up, chipping away at the bosses health, and staying alive. I like the theme, but I would say I prefer Arkham to Marvel for the narrative.

@@mistletoemonkey Thank you! From what you explain, I doubt I'll like Marvel since it seems to focus on the mechanics without an immersive story (the alter ego thing is a nice touch though), and the narrative it's the only thing that made Arkham a lot better than LoTR for me. But I'll still watch a playthrough.

@@mistletoemonkey I own Marvel Champions as well as the Arkham Horror LCG and I'd say about the same thing. One is immersive storytelling, the other one is a boss battler. Both very very good in their own right, but very different games even though they are both LCGs.

If I have Eldritch with a couple of expansions, would Arkham 3rd provide enough of a different experience?
@JohnLaRuffa
@JohnLaRuffa Жыл бұрын
Yes and no. It depends how much different you want. The encounters, narrative, skill checks, characters and items are all the same. However, the scenarios are tighter, the monsters are much more unavoidable and the board is tighter and a bit more predictable by design as to what you get from each space.

@@JohnLaRuffa It's OK that why this list is different than my 😊 Essentiall in my opinion is a list that contains the most solo basic games maybe Onirim, Friday, marvel champions, etc could fit to that 🤷 As for roll and write - no, hate that too... Just hate chasing after vp in general give me a puzzle or boss to beat instead 😉

I understand mabos555's point here, but I am still with John on this one. I like the basic ones like Onirim, Fire!, Friday etc. Those are nice little games and very old school in the true solo department. And I've played them all and liked them. But they are fillers. Ok, kids are out of the house, dishes are washed, dryer is running... I got 30 minutes. But that's it. For the full experience, I'd rather go with Gaia Project. ;)
