Top 10 Fight Scenes of All Time | A CineFix Movie List

In 2014 we tackled the Top 10 Fight Scenes of All Time, and you know what? A lot’s changed! There have been some great new fight scenes that deserve recognition, but more than that, the way we look at movies has changed a lot too. So we thought the greatest fight scenes of all time deserves another look. Do we still like the picks we made back then? Or the categories we broke them down into? Here is our first CineFix Re-Listing, the Top 10 Fight Scenes of All Time!
We first look at the sweet science, the organized fights of Boxing movies like Rocky or MMA films like Tom Hardy in Warrior, before moving on to the knives, swords and sabres of Hero, Kill Bill and The Princess Bride, two on one fights like the ones in Kiss of the Dragon or Keanu Reeves in the Man of Tai Chi, one vs. many brawls like those you find in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, or Tony Jaa in The Protector. Tonally we go all the way from the grittier, realistic end of the fight spectrum like Atomic Blonde, the Bourne movies or the most wonderfully crotch kneeing alleyway fight of all time in They Live, to the opposite, more fun end with the comedic fight scenes in Scott Pilgrim, Pirates of the Caribbean and Kung Fu Hustle.

So glad to see 'The Raid Redemption' here. i started the movie like "meh, a generic action movie i guess" and ended it like "This is the best action movie ever".

@@ajbahlam The Raid: Redemption is the first movie which includes the two on one fight with Mad Dog finale. The Raid 2: Berandal is the sequel with the one on one kitchen fight with the karambit (curved Silat knife) finale.

I saw the Raid on a whim when it had its original release thinking the same thing. I left physically exhausted and wanted to see it again but I was at the last show of the day! It was truly one of those theater experiences where I felt I saw something new.

It really works for this one because the original list didn't have the categories that they are know for now. It was more of a usual top 10 then a top 10 by categories.

That one is easy: The end fight in Sword of the Stranger by a long long loong shot. Second place is harder to pick but I'd go with Knocking on Heavens Door. :)

Legend Of The Drunken Master is chock full of some of the best choreographed fights ever put on film. The sword and spear fight under the train was a brilliant start and the movie just kept giving. It is my pick for the number one fight movies of all time. 🤘

There's only ONE big omission, and that's the legendary gritty ultralong fistfight of Keith David vs Roddy Piper in They Live. Everything else I had in mind (Zhang Yimou, The Raid movies etc.) you included, so I salute you.

Maybe it could replace the Saving Private Ryan fight. It may not be as gut-wrenching, but it's more classic and memorable, I would say. Also I'm not even sure if there's ever been a longer fistfight in cinema.

It really is a fantastic scene. I just love the moment when Roddy Piper's character takes a swing at Keith David with a 2X4, misses, then immediately realises he's gone too far and apologises. You can tell they had a ton of fun shooting it.

Watching a CineFix list like this is like consuming a nice parfait of facts, witty observations, and lots of fun. You know, sometimes you might not fully agree with some parts or maybe you think one layer should've gotten higher or lower, but in the end, it's all there, you're enjoying it, and you sometimes get exposed to new and novel things that make you decide to try more of it.

Legit such a hard one to watch. I can watch gory brutal fights no problem but the stab in that scene is still one of the reasons I rarely watch that incredible movie

One I always enjoyed was Sherlock Holmes vs Moriarty in “A Game of Shadows”. The set up the whole movie where Holmes is able to defeat several opponents by seeing the whole fight play out ahead of time, only to have someone equal in that ability was amazing. When you first hear Moriarty during the fight sequence I got goosebumps.

It's a good fight, but if we consider the fight in the context of the "fight in the imagination", then Hero definitely takes it out for the same space.

Love the list. Would love to see more Tony Jaa… such a unique take on Kung fu mixed with Muay Thai. his involvement in the final fight in Kill Zone 2 is just incredible all 3 actors put on a MASTERPIECE in that one IMO

A very recent one is the duel to the death from The Last Duel. When it's finally shown in full glory I was so invested that my heart was pounding notably due to the stakes. It has been a while since this was achieved by a fight scene. Plus Ridley Scott just knows how to orchestrate such a fight

Honorable mention to Brawl in Cell Block 99's final fight scene with Vince Vaughn literally mopping the floor with Eleazar and his henchmen. Brutal and realistic it has stuck with me for a long time. S. Craig Zahler puts you right into the scene with no music and sound effects so real it hurts.

I absolutely love "Kill Zone" and "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon". Fantastic to see both films get a spot here. But in the "comedy" section, one bizarre fight scene from a movie that's otherwise nothing to do with fighting is Colin Firth vs Hugh Grant in "Bridget Jones' Diary". Honestly could be the funniest fight scene of all time, it has so many standout moments - the waiters from the Indian restaurant across the street watching slack-jawed going "It's a REAL FIGHT!", to Hugh Grant sucker-punching Colin Firth with a dustbin lid, every single moment of this fight is absolute comedy gold. And the fact that it's basically the only action scene in a romantic comedy doesn't detract from just how awesome this one scene is.

The Gross Pointe Blank lockers scene. Brilliant because it’s intense with both fighters going for the jugular and it’s over before you know it. It’s a brilliant and funny film, but I remember the whole audience coming over with shocked silence. Benny Urquidez and John Cusack

The Muay Thai fights in 'A Prayer Before Dawn' are some of my favourite fight scenes. Usually done in one take, they really capture the suffocating nature of being in a gruelling fight and the choreography doesn't edit out the more sloppy/chaotic moments of the matches, making it feel all the more real

Oh man, the night comes for us' final fight scene does such a good job of balancing some insanity with grittiness. I thought that was so well done. And that one scene with the boxcutter. Got me on all the levels. So damn fun

I've this just behind the fight by Rowdy Piper amd Keith David in They Live. Love this one too. Everyone I introduce the movie to loves it. And also wish they'd included scenes from Zatoichi The Blind Swordsman with Takeshi Kitano. Great music choreography with great fight scenes too...

True Romance‘s Alabama vs James Gandolfini is worth a mention. The sheer brutality and against all odds nature of the scene plus the emotional intensity to me is overwhelming.

That movie surprised me so much. I love that right before that final fight Riggs and Murtaugh both talk about that it isn't worth it and they're too old to fight him, yet do it anyway

How about Top X best 'duels' of all time? About intellectual, verbal , strategic, combat, sport and so on stand offs between 2 characters where it is not necessarily about physical prowess or skill but the core principles and ideas the characters represent. From Catch me if you can, through Rocky IV, Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows, Deluge and more

Bruce Lee is like the Stradivarius of fighters. There may be modern fighters who are technically better than him. But he will always be the one the others will be compared to, or aspire to be.

I’d love to see the addition of an animated fight scene. It opens a whole jar of story telling, flow and possibility when the characters can be animated to do anything, anywhere at anytime.

@zerototalchaos Sword of the Stranger is very good. Kinetics, environment usage, cinematography - it risks the top spot in my mind largely due to some missing storytelling elements. Naruto vs Sasuke's final several-episode-long grudge match is a master class in several lessons: ultra-hype superpower fights, storytelling fight scenes, culmination/climactic fight scenes, and grueling endurance matches. For raw hype, it's a close match between One Punch Man vs Boros, and Naruto & Sasuke vs Momoshiki, though One Punch has the same gaps as Sword of the Stranger. Cowboy Bebop has some incredible fights, particularly in the film, with the broom fight, the train fight, and the tower fight. Let's also not forget the beauty and emotional intensity of the fights in Ghibli's masterpiece, Mononoke Hime. In the West, Avatar: The Last Airbender has two of the most beautiful fights put to paper in Aang vs Ozai, and even more beautifully but succinctly in the last Agni Kai between Zuko and Azula The stylised beauty of Genndy Tartakovsky is highlighted best in Samurai Jack's black & white fight vs the Ninja or in the Clone Wars animations I'm not sure that Animation should be one slot. It should be a whole list.

6:22 - "The Princess Bride" should have won this spot. Their fight also tells a story... of athleticism, respect, skill, learning, and sportsmanship, all of which have the underlying need for Inigo to stop the Man in Black, while the latter needs to continue his chase for Buttercup.

Jackie vs Jet: the legend, well, at least according to Jet himself, was Jackie wants to have more realistic fight scene so he asks Jet to not held back. Donnie vs Jing: they have improvised partial fights, not the whole shoot. The part that you can tell improvised was the one they back off from each others and looking for a space to strike.

My favorite one vs. many fight is in one of Jackie Chan's earlier movies "Spiritual Kung Fu" where he has to fight through 18 people who all have bo-staffs. The choreography is just great and it feels throughout like one inch off throughout the entire thing and someone's getting really hurt. It's awesome.

I love the bathroom fight in The World's End too for its choreography, humor and the way it escalates the story from 5 childhood friends drinking together in their hometown to an alien invasion movie so seemlesly

I want to mention my favorite superhero fight - David Dunn vs the orange man from Unbreakable. It's very simple, with no flashiness or even any fighting moves, but it's how a hero should fight. He's totally unselfish, just doing what needs to be done, and persevering until the threat is gone. The best comic book movie isn't even based on a comic!

Great list with lots of great scenes. Glad the sword fight in CTHD got it's props. Would have loved to see Brandon Lee on the list. His laundry room fight in Rapid Fire still holds up today.

If there was ever a subcategory of 'fight scenes in non-fighting movies', Grosse Pointe Blank's would surely be one of the top ones. Also I'm a huge fan of the fist-fight between Bond and Trevelyan in the cradle in Goldeneye.

I still like Jackie Chan vs jet li in the forbidden kingdom is still one of my favorite fights I have ever seen. Also sword battle I'd give it to the part in the great race film.

Jet Li's Unleashed's final fight sequence comes to mind as well. Great character development in terms of fighting style over the course of the movie. Very memorable.
