Tapestry - I traded it away because I didn't like the randomness of the Tapestry cards. If you start with a bad hand of cards, it was tough to get going. Reluctantly played it again at a friends place and it played better with the expansion and some errata on the civs. May look into acquiring it again.

I think I have only one regret. It's Civilization: New Dawn. I thought base game was good, but it was lacking things. I was hoping for expansion, but none was coming so I sold it. And what do you know, a couple of months after I sold it, they announced expansion.

House on the hill is so unique, in that, the story scenarios end up being super broken/one sided half the time... but it's ruleset is digestible enough to make the game very accessible and quick to teach, and a game usually ends up with a memorable story that usually ends up getting recanted.

I definitely want to try Inis! I actually enjoy the feeling of someone at the table saying "I'm about to win, try and stop me." It means you have to maneuver your positioning in such a way that you can't be stopped. Love it! Usually makes for some tense gameplay

This was a fun video. Star Realms was one of the very first games I bought when I got into the hobby. It is a great game - and takes up no shelf space (it is in a drawer with other card games). You should definitely pick it up at your FLGS. Ethnos is also a favorite - but I can see how it might drag at larger player counts (I have only played it with two). A couple of times you mentioned a game being out of print. Something that has struck me as I have learned about the hobby is how quickly some games go out of print, which is one reason I am reluctant to part with anything because if I change my mind, I might not be able to track it down again. BTW, the roast beef story was excellent - I can completely sympathize as I am the one who plays food-and-drink cop in my house.

Great video! Thanks! I would recommend playing Inis again with the expansion. I find it an fun game, and working out card and turn management strategies to assure a win, even with an early in the round pretender token draw, can be part of the fun. Also, a person does not have to take a token just because they have a win condition, but must to win. So managing that tension can be an addition to game play. Hope you enjoy it!!

I'm with you on the roast beef guy, Naveen. We were playing Stone Age with friends when one of them spilled her ice tea all over the board. We scrambled quickly to clean it up, drying the board, cards, etc. Needless to say the game ended prematurely, but we tried again later with no food or drinks on the table. Recently saw these friends again and one of them commented how particular I am about my games. What!?! Who likes the ice tea covered version of Stone Age?! Thanks for your story and the list.

I'm a bit late in watching this video, but I hope you guys got a chance to revisit Inis. I adore that game. Naveen mentioned that he wants to feel clever in his games, and counter to his point, I have seen some of the most clever, surprising plays in Inis. The fact that you have to "announce" your impending victory doesn't necessarily mean you can't do anything sneaky. I've seen several games, for example, where players have (through keen drafting and timing of card play) won the game as the last player in a round after all other players were out of cards. I also love how you are encouraged to cooperate with other players, but only one person can win. Kingmaking doesn't bother me at all, but I can understand how people might disagree with me.

I love Oh My Goods, I definitely recommend also picking up the Longsdale expansion for it, it makes the game even better. You switch from having the number of buildings built be the timer to having an event deck be the timer, there's a bunch of new buildings, and the events are a good edition to it. Oh man, I would never get rid of Star Realms, that's such a fantastic deckbuilder, I would definitely recommend adding events (just a fun randomizer to throw in), missions (gives alternate win conditions to players) and cosmic gambit (gives player asymetric starting bonuses) and potentially looking into the command decks for asymetric player powers. I can't say I have much regret in terms of getting rid of games, there are definitely good games that have left the collection, but looking through the list of 200+ games I have let go over the years, I still find my reasoning for letting them go to remain solid. Either I wasn't prioritising them (meaning there were too many other games I'd rather play) or I swapped them out for app version or a different game that did the job better.

Fun list guys, the sandwich story was hilarious! Please no food at the table! I have a few regrets of my own during my culls. I try to keep my collection at 50 games or less. As a result some tough decisions come up from time to time. My biggest regret was getting rid of my copy of Forbidden Stars. No longer in print...I wish I kept that one. It was a wonderful game, and I remember I got rid of it because the box was too big, and it was only getting played a few times a year. I really do miss those couple games a year though.

I really love Ethnos. It is easy to learn and teach, and the battle for control of the board really becomes tense, especially as the dragons start coming out. My experience is that with 4+ players the rounds become faster and faster as the game goes -- at times, we forget whose turn it is because we are all struggling with which band to play, should I keep waiting or act now with what I have while trying to watch the board and the cards on the table. To me, that tension and tactical play is very enjoyable.

Great video guys I related a lot to this list, we are a board gaming couple too, my partner is Emma. We have Quantum, but it's in the "cupboard" not on the shelf, I agree it is a good game and needs to come out of the cupboard! Camel Up is in the cupboard too but we never want to play this as 2 player so that's why its there. It's a good family game though, good fun. Inis is such a great game! I have no problems with kingmaking in the case of Inis. With careful planning and clever tactics, you can outsmart the other players I think, putting them in a tough situation in which their kingmaking attempts simply won't succeed. It's pretty rewarding :P

My favourite play in Inis, which I found by accident, is to set someone else up to win next turn early in a turn and then after the rest of the players have knocked them down, using up their best cards to do so, activate your own win condition.

Arboretum's original box is a fascinating case, because it's not like Quantum where people still sell it but make sure to double the price - it's instead so popular that people won't part with their copies at all, to the point that price never comes into play. That's the sign of a truly universally beloved classic. Both are games that I luckily held onto.

Quantum is so good! And tough to find now. Its funny playing a space game where your ships are just big chunky dice but they different layouts make the game highly re-playable. I don't own it but loved it when I played it. Ethnos is also one of my favorites, scales great anywhere from 2-6 players. I hope they make a 2nd edition with a new look and some more area control elements that occur on the map. I need to cull my collection as well. I like the quickness of Star Realms, and the low setup time. It’s great for me to bring to my students. What I prefer in Dominion is that it isn’t as nasty … you don’t have to win by eliminating your opponents. I also prefer the creativity of Dominion, because in Star Realms you already know exactly what cards work well with each other (because of the factions), but in Dominion you have no idea what cards will pop up and therefore what will work together well, so you have to come up with a new strategy every game. I quite like that! As for Arboretum, I’ve never seen the old art before but it does look beautiful! Have you played Songbirds? I feel like Songbirds is to Arboretum as Star Realms is to Dominion … Songbirds is the quick and simple little sibling, with many of the same mechanics, including creating a tableau of adjacent cards (only one in Songbirds, though), set collection, and needing to keep high-numbered cards of a suit in order to benefit from the scoring. I think I prefer Arboretum, but if you’re that level of fan of Arboretum, you might like Songbirds. It’s definitely more intense and much more rides on a single decision, so it lacks the sort of grace that Arboretum has, but it’s great for the quick, simple adrenaline rush and brain-burn.

@@BeforeYouPlay If you haven't tried it I highly recommend Shards of Infinity. It plays almost identically to Star Realms but it has a level up mechanism called Mastery that unlocks new powers on cards in your deck. This gives it a new layer compared to Star Realms without over complicating the quick and satisfying gameplay. Plus it has an expansion that turns it into a co-op game for a different experience. I haven't tried the co-op mode but Jamey Stegmaier from Stonemaier Games raves about it.

The Inis expansion doesn't change the way the pretender tokens work or having to declare you are about to win, it just help decide ties so that you don't have multiple rounds of players tied to win. I think the reason declaring you are about to win works in the game is that there are multiple paths to victory and simultaneous victory can be very common, so it's not necessarily bashing the 'leading player' since there may be three players vying for the same title. Also, I think it's very thematically fitting since each player is a chieftain trying to become the high king/queen of the Celts ruling over the other clans, so it's realistic that a chieftain would publicly nominate himself while displaying he had what it takes to rule.

I have Inis (+ expansion) and would gladly play it with you guys if you want :) I'm pretty sure we live fairly close to each other.

I think I would have been enraged with roast beef person, probably just stopping the game altogether. Great video, keep up the great work! You bring an air of freshness to the scene which I do appreciate.

Fun list! I have had a long interest in Quantum but never had the right opportunity to play it or purchase it. Love the unique dice pip/ship ability mechanic, but an leery of it's ultimately very abstract, chess-like game play. Star Realms will never leave my collection, it's fast, fun and a classic entry level deck builder. Ethnos has been a near-miss for me; thanks for helping me feel better about not getting it. I think I regret culling Smallworld the most, but not really. The art and box organizer are great, but the inevitable decline of your fantasy hoardes always sours the game play for me.

Nice vid as usual. Two thoughts: my friends and I enjoy Star Realms more on the computer than the hard copy cards. If someone was thinking about that title, would encourage them to check out the online version. And..... Betrayal.... ugh, I SO want to like that game. And the opening of the game (pre-Haunt) is wonderful. But.... so often we have run into issues where the person who cracked and has to now act alone is unsure what they have to do once they go off and read their new directive. Even the rest who have their own rules to read, they are often too briefly written with ambiguous plot and rules holes! It can be thoroughly frustrating. I so wish they would have created a game with 12 longer, better-composed, more descriptive, tight, clear storys, instead of 25 that often lead to confusion and rules arguments.

5 overlaps, so you've picked some great ones. Don't think I will ever forget your roast beef story. 😂

Betrayal at the house on the hill is amazing - sadly I had so much difficulties playing it with people who don't have a very good grasp of english as a language; played it 3 times, loved it but everyone was "meh"... so sad to trade it away.

Betrayal is one of my favorites! I don’t play it as much since Legacy came out but I can’t bring myself to get rid of it.

I also culled Inis before giving it a proper chance and before the expansion was out, I want to give to give that one another chance. Other ones I regret are Grand Austria Hotel and Concordia.

Cartographers has some expansions coming out later this year, might be a good reason to pick it up again.

I’ve always been on the fence about Cartographers because I do have other roll n writes but I might have to take another look at it.

Naveen will be hooked at Star Realms. At really dislike very confrontational head-to-head games, but Star Realms is different. It holds a sweet spot in my heart.
