Had the opportunity to play this course today - speechless at not just the course, but the Wonderfull staff that blew me away. From the gentlemen who run you from the putting green to the club house by golf cart to the friendly and helpful marshals, and the fantastic caddies that really make the experience. It was windy and challenging, but you wouldn't have it any other way.

@@TheYorkie72 I rate Tiger as the best for two reasons. Jack stated himself that Tiger goes up against a lot more players who can win then he did, and Jack also stated that Tiger has the best short game ever, even better than Jacks. Oh, Jack also stated if Tiger did not have those injuries, he would have surpassed him. Plus Jack has 73 PGA wins and Tiger has 82 PGA Wins and a few more years yet.

What dig? Because he said you want to be a player who will truly be remembered, you have to win at St. Andrews? If you think he meant that as a dig, then how do you know it wasn't directed at Ben Hogan or Walter Hagen, neither of whom won there either. There was no dig, ridiculous assertion.

@@jonburrows8602 I think it's a jab at Watson more than Palmer. But In 1960, where Palmer won the Masters and US Open and was going for the 3rd major win but he came in second.That was played at the old course St Andrew's. As great as these guys are, they could never win the PGA championship in their career. Hogan is a career grand slam winner and won on his first and only try at the Open. How many Pros can say that?. Walter Hagen was the first American born winner, so I don't think it's those guys.

Mr sanders missing the putt to win is unfortunately the most memorable and iconic moment at St. Andrews. I can understand why they didn’t put it #1. All golf courses, whether their architects realise it or not, are to some degree imitation of St Andrews, and almost none of them come anywhere near it.
@JamesSmith-qr7be
@JamesSmith-qr7be 3 жыл бұрын
Almost all are imitations? Really? I can see that with say augusta or even Oakmount. Pebble beach not so much.
@ysgol3
@ysgol3 3 жыл бұрын
@@JamesSmith-qr7be When Jones helped design Augusta, he ensured that the last (not the monster it is now!) was relatively straightforward, hence no water, following the example of the easy (in theory!) 18th at St Andrews. Same principle with the 18th at Pebble in this sense - it is (or should be), despite the water, a straightforward 5 for someone who needs a 5 to win.
@JamesSmith-qr7be
@JamesSmith-qr7be 3 жыл бұрын
@@ysgol3 pebble beach has water down the entire left hand side of the 18th literally from tee to green. Sure a straight forward par for a pro but personally I would find the 18th at St Andrews miles easier than both 18s at augusta and pebble. In fact 18 at augusta isnt that straight forward at all. Pebble if you get your tee shot right isnt too bad. St Andrews you have OB right bjt if you have a slice like I do you could literally aim left of the 1st tee block and you have miles and miles of fairway to work with and its short! St Andrews 18th is a different league of easy compared to Pebble and Augustas 18th. St Andrews 1st and 18th tee shots are potentially the two easiest tee shots on the tour
@ysgol3
@ysgol3 3 жыл бұрын
@@JamesSmith-qr7be I was referring to the original 18th at Augusta, not the very hard much longer hole it's become. Re Pebble, well, everyone's view is different - for a good player on the verge of winning, an 'arms block' 3 wood to the right, then a mid iron to the fairway before it narrows, then a short iron - job done. Tom Watson played it like that to win the 1982 US Open. As for St Andrews, like I say, it influenced Jones 100% for Augusta. Of course even the easiest holes can provide disaster - Doug Sanders in the 1970 Open being of course the prime example.
@JamesSmith-qr7be
@JamesSmith-qr7be 3 жыл бұрын
@@ysgol3 I agree re augusta as you said Jones said he based it on st andrews I just don't agree when it comes to all courses. And lets be honest most holes on thr pga tour that are par 5s are easy pars for those guys. Not that many hard par 5s to par maybe the 14th at pebble would be one of the tougher ones to par. St Andrews 18th is rediculously easy but if the pin is in a tricky spot then obviously you still gotta make the putts. The 17th at St Andrews would have one of the hardest approach shots in golf would rival the 12th at augusta. If I played the 17th I would lay up haha no way would i take that green on.
