For me, the #1 song for this category has to be “Exile” by Enya. The track is from her second studio album “Watermark”. It was included in the soundtrack of Steve Martin’s “LA Story” and the video for the song features scenes from that movie. Notwithstanding this, the song is truly beautiful, and stands out as an exemplar for this category.

Enya deserved an actual spot on the list, not merely an honorable mention. However, as gorgeous and haunting as "Only Time" is, there is one song from her library that eclipses it: "Exile" from the Watermark album. It's a song about loneliness and fear, and yearning to reunite with a lost loved one. Enya's voice is at its purest, the subdued melody helps to highlight the singer's isolation, and the song itself just grips the heartstrings even if you don't follow the lyrics.
@BeeWhistler
@BeeWhistler 7 жыл бұрын
I could choose a stack of Enya songs that are more hauntingly beautiful than Only Time... and I'm kinda burned out on her stuff. I never could abide that song. It was overplayed when it came out and the lyrics never struck me as profound. They sound like something a middle schooler would write for a poetry assignment trying to sound clever. Phrases like "who can say" and "only time" add up to lazy philosophical songwriting. I always wished she had sung it in Irish. Then I never would have known how vapid it was and might have liked it better.

"These Are the Days of Our Lives" Queen For me, this will always be the most haunting song to ever hear or watch. The deeply reflective lyrics second to the fact that it's one of the most beloved performers and singers ever and he's in the late stages of dying from something people knew close to nothing about. And still finds the strength to look directly into the eyes of and sing a heartfelt song to his fans as an honest and heartfelt goodbye. That'll always top lists for me.

Yeah, gotta agree with you on Mazzy Star there. A few others, too. Like, it's become a bit of a cliche, but "Sweet Jane" should be there, any version will do. And what the hell "Fade Into You" rips off "Knockin' On Heavin's Door" ?!!!?!?!?!?! That could the worst claim about song ripoff I've ever heard. They barely have any congruence at all. What, they were both recorded on Earth? Both by humans? Oh, I know, they both are set to lyrics and both feature musical intervals. Yeah, ripoff.

I remember reading somewhere about Reznor's reaction when he first heard Cash's remake. He said it was like watching someone have sex with your high-school girlfriend it hit him so hard. He said the more he listened to it, the more he realized that he didn't write that song for himself. That the song was meant for Johnny Cash the whole time. He just got to use it for a little while. Even now, Trent Reznor refers to it as a Johnny Cash song, not his own.

@Theresa Love's You Tube his dad wrote that song but I think he was so much more evocative than his father musically with the hairraising and ethereal tone of his vibrato it's like even if Jeff managed to get past the "27 club" of Cobain, Winehouse, so many others..., It was by only a few brief years and I listen to GRACE now, it's just like Whoa, it's so charged... Electrifying.. how could I not have known that one was already on loan to us more than most... He's going between the two worlds on this record acrobatically and it's just, wow... Incredible. I would like to say that it's "timeless" except that it moves beyond that to the place where I believe songs come from, as a songwriter myself, and timelessness is different, in whatever way I can make sense of it, I just know it's a feeling that I can only say lives outside of time/space, it has not even gotten a chance to take you to the place where you already are because it's already something you can remember before we had time, I guess, I think it's like trying to explain classiness: you can read it across the room, across the street and it is not for sale and can not be bought anyways because it's priceless, but you know it. Jeff managed to so this spectral dance between world's and he had a voice that "haunting" but it's because I believe he was there somewhere in the elbow crook of the moon in the middle of a song, he was very intense but he himself wasn't a haunted man, but just taking the cover of the Leonard Cohen song Hallelujah, he went that place to which I was just referring. The place where songs are born I call it the keep. It's exits outside timespace.

Disappointed, I thought that I was going to hear hauntingly beautiful music but it was ruined by the constant talking.

It's literally the saddest song on the planet. A lot of depth without over the top dramatics.

We don't want to hear the essays you have written on these songs. Please state your opinions in 1 or 2 sentences and play the song. Thank you.

So write them down and buy them later. and Why say anything about her talking you get the jest of it. enough to listen to the whole thing on another device or Download it like i did. No need to talk trash about Ms Mojo . She Picks you interest so find another way to listen to the whole song. Easy she it giving details about the song.

If by chance you've never heard Pentatonix sing Hallelujah, find a quiet place where you will not be disturbed (ear buds or good speakers are best) and listen to it as soon as you get the chance. It's unbelievable.
