I could choose a stack of Enya songs that are more hauntingly beautiful than Only Time... and I'm kinda burned out on her stuff. I never could abide that song. It was overplayed when it came out and the lyrics never struck me as profound. They sound like something a middle schooler would write for a poetry assignment trying to sound clever. Phrases like "who can say" and "only time" add up to lazy philosophical songwriting. I always wished she had sung it in Irish. Then I never would have known how vapid it was and might have liked it better.

I remember reading somewhere about Reznor's reaction when he first heard Cash's remake. He said it was like watching someone have sex with your high-school girlfriend it hit him so hard. He said the more he listened to it, the more he realized that he didn't write that song for himself. That the song was meant for Johnny Cash the whole time. He just got to use it for a little while. Even now, Trent Reznor refers to it as a Johnny Cash song, not his own.

Even more astounding is that Trent Resner loves his rendition of it too. Maybe more than his own!

@Theresa Love's You Tube his dad wrote that song but I think he was so much more evocative than his father musically with the hairraising and ethereal tone of his vibrato it's like even if Jeff managed to get past the "27 club" of Cobain, Winehouse, so many others..., It was by only a few brief years and I listen to GRACE now, it's just like Whoa, it's so charged... Electrifying.. how could I not have known that one was already on loan to us more than most... He's going between the two worlds on this record acrobatically and it's just, wow... Incredible. Jeff managed to so this spectral dance between world's and he had a voice that "haunting" but it's because I believe he was there somewhere in the elbow crook of the moon in the middle of a song, he was very intense but he himself wasn't a haunted man, but just taking the cover of the Leonard Cohen song Hallelujah, he went that place to which I was just referring.
