CarlosSpungenMoss But Maria Callas was a worldwide superstar in the 50s, as one of the most talented lyric singers ever and as the wife of Aristote Onassis. Forgetting her is like forgetting Rita Hayworth in a top 10 of female singers-actors in the 40s.

Karen Carpenter's beautiful voice was so smooth, pure, and crystal clear, no other singer can match the beautifuil qualities in her voice she has no equal. No one can sing anything like Karen Carpenter that is why she is so great and unforgetable. She's the best.

Guys, everyone here is legendary, even the honorable mentions and ones they missed. The 50's through 70s! How could you just pick 10! I think they did a great job with their order, honorable mention means your just as honorable as those on the list. Etta James? Ella Fitzgerald? Cmon! Who could beat them! Iconic! But also Billie Holiday and Barbra Streisand. Epic. Overall an Epic list of Epic hisotrical figures whos voices, if your not moved by them, you just dont have a soul truthfully. Lol

Frida Lyngstad and Agnetha Faltskog should be in this list. They are the godmothers of modern pop in many ways. People are still rediscovering Abba songs that weren´t even hits at the time like. When I Kissed The Teacher, Head over Heels, Under Attack, Happy New Year, Soldiers etc. True evergreens that people haven´t heard. 100 percent timeless.

Very good list, but I think you could have broken it down into three separate lists covering each decade and still have an impressive lineup for each one. That way you could have included Wanda Jackson rocking in the Fifties, Grace Slick wailing in the Sixties, and Poly Styrene knocking it out in the Seventies.

This list is a complete joke; the only person's spot you got correct is Aretha's. Someone like Barbra Streisand should be top 3 at least, girl won 2 academy awards and is a Broadway/music icon. Also Carole King and Carly Simon are not even an honorable mentions? Blue from Joni Mitchell and Tapestry from Carole King are considered the two greatest albums by women ever according to Rolling Stone. Diana Ross should've been so much higher up, she paved the way for so many, she is a true pop icon. Cher is still relevant to this day, yet she's not on this list. Karen Carpenter deserved better than an honorable mention. Sorry, but this list shows that Ms Mojo knows nothing about music.

Though chosen by a "bigger picture" on the impact on female artists and the recording industry, many of the the "honorable mentions" were more gifted vocalists (with voices as an instrument) than some of the top 10. All in all, a great video to remind me of the truly gifted women in music from that era!

Considering some of the other "iconic female singers" lists this one at least makes some sense. By "iconic" I think they mean female singers who have had such an impact on popular culture that they can't be ignored: They literally changed the way people listened to music. If we go by that definition then I'd make a few changes. Instead of Dolly Parton I'd choose Patsy Cline, (who pretty much invented the modern day female country singer), Nina Simone for Tina Turner (Simone's impact on black music and black nationalism in the late 50's and 60's was unparalleled, while Tina Turner only became truly influential in the 80's) and I'd switch Ella Fitzgerald for Barbara Streisand. Ella is untouchable, but her relevance as a singer was chiefly in the 40's and 50's with her famous songbooks of Gershwin and Cole Porter. Streisand's popularity as a singer and actress, along with her extraordinary voice, is hard to overlook. Though she was never as "hip" as Joni Mitchell or Janis Joplin, she was nevertheless a major influence on 60's and 70's popular culture. As for the rest of the list, I'd say it's pretty much on target. Cher is a pop icon to be sure, but musically she was never taken as seriously by the public. "I Got You Babe" was great, but "Half-Breed, Gypsy, Tramps and Thieves? She certainly remains more popular than some of the other artists on the list (she has the distinction of having a top 40 hit in almost every decade) but she has had only 4 # 1 records in the U.S. As for Donna Summer, she continues to be an underrated singer, but that's due to the straight jacket of disco.

The runners up are better known here in the Philippines than the top 7 to 10, they are better too esp Barbra, Donna Summer and Karen Carpenters.
