I think that John Lennon saying that the Beatles were more popular than Jesus should have been in at least honorable mentions because everyone burned Beatles records and radio stations banned the Beatles. Queen releasing the video for their song I want to break free should have been on here because it got banned by MTV for being offensive because they were dressed in drag.

Pherhaps not a top ten, but I'd give a mention to when the sex pistols chartered a boat, sailed down the river, and disturbed the queens anniversary by playing "God save the queen" (Not a song exactly praising the queen if you listen to the lyrics). They got stopped by the police after a few songs, and their manager got beat up for yelling "fascists" or something if I remember corectly. A very successful publicity stunt.

Commonly known as "Disco Demolition Night" at the then Comiskey Park. July 12, 1979. Steve Dahl was fired from his previous disc jockey post because they switched to Disco music, so he joined WLUP "the Loop" and was selected to promote the destruction of disco records in between games of a doubleheader. The rest is alot to try to shorten but basically thousands rushed the field, destroyed it, and it became known as the night disco died. For more info i'll post the wiki page about it. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disco_Demolition_Night

How do the Stones make number 1 with Altamont, but the Sex Pistols' 'God Save the Queen' during the Queens Jubilee, that resulted in their sailing gig down the Thames being stopped n boarded and the band being arrested - with calls for their being tried and hanged at Traitors Gate - doesn't? When it comes to Woodstock 99, a large contributing factor to the riot, and looting of vendor booths was a lack of water. The entire weekend of the event saw temperatures in the 90's with Sunday afternoon hitting 100 degrees. Now this wouldn't have been a problem initially as there were free water fountains set up at many locations throughout the event. The big problem started when a certain subgroup of attendants, the so called "Mud People" couldn't play in the mud like their parents did during the first Woodstock, due to lack of rain, so they decided to make their own... BY SMASHING THE WATER FOUNTAINS, as well as tipping over a few portable toilets just for good measure. This happened Friday afternoon, and seeing the sudden shortage of clean drinking water, many vendors started price gouging people for the bottled water they had in stock, in some cases charging as much as $10 for a 1 liter bottle. After 3 days of this most of the crowd were both thirsty, and angry.

Dixie chicks vs the president , the Beatles take on Jesus, the nightclub fire, the shooting of dime bag (I know you said no deaths but he was shot on stage. Kinda puts him in a dif category) Britney and Christina kiss madonna, The Who stampede (cmon that was awful) more recently the shooting in Paris during a concert (while most had never heard of the band the members are pretty well known). The premiere of MTV , the burning of disco albums, the Beatles break up, madonnas erotica (even more controversial than like a prayer could only be played after midnight), what's his name sitting on top of the building and freaking everyone out at the vmas. So many moments you left out. You could have even added the first Grammy winner , the time a musical score swept the academy awards, prince at the Super Bowl, even go way back and mention the crazy concert of Beethoven. B.B. King and the fire and the story of Lucille. All music didn't just start in the 80s.

The Metallica/Guns N'Roses show on August 8, 1992, at Montreal's Olympic Stadium. James Hetfield is critically injured by a mistimed pyrotechnic and has to be rushed to the ER. GNR, asked to fill the remaining time, causes a riot when Axl quits after only one or two songs. The audience, already pissed about the long delay in getting GNR on stage, went nuts. The ensuing riot caused millions in damages and nearly caused the Quebec government to call out the army.

Mostly right. They absurdly asked Guns to go on early, the reason Metallica opened these shows was because they knew they could do their show and get on with their lives and then it was up to Guns. So Guns was asked to go on early, went on later than even they were supposed to without the accident, then peaced after 55 minutes, not one or two songs. Then the riot happened.

I'm a big fan of Garth Brooks, and it frustrates me to no end that he doesn't do streaming services or Itunes, but that being said: every single time he releases anything, he ensures that it's a low price that is affordable by all this fans. Even his concert tickets were all priced the same, no matter the seat. He's arguably the biggest/most famous country music singer living today, and I only paid about $75 after fees to go see him in concert, with great seats for a 3+ hour concert. I honestly don't think it's greed, but more because he wants direct control over how his music is packaged and sold. He'd likely make more money by selling to big companies like Itunes and Spotify.

Funny thing about "Payola" is that's how modern radio works. You hear the same 10 songs in rotation because stations are all owned by big companies getting paid to play popular music. The music is only popular because it's constantly played and people think that because of how much it's played, it's obviously good so it's all an illusion.

I mean is Lars wrong? I have every single Metallica song on my Galaxy s7 including their brand new one, Hardwired, and I didn't pay a cent. How's that fair to the Artists

I don't blame people for not wanting the U2 album downloaded to their phone, but the problem was that you couldn't delete it- not that they gave a free album away. It was supposed to just stay in the cloud, but Apple messed up. That was Apple's fault, U2 just made the music

Honorable mention has to be the GNR/Metallica show where James got burned, and Axl stopped the show early because a guy snuck in a camera. Which caused a riot.

To be fair though the media took John's comment of that completely out of context. Still controversial to those who heard it.
