I am fortunate to live in Dunolly, Victoria, Australia. This is about ten km from where the Welcome Stranger was found. Earlier this year I had the opportunity to hold a recently discovered nugget weighing a shade over 23 Kilograms. I detect for gold most days and my largest nugget to date is 5.7 troy ounces.

I recently ran across an old publication online that talked about the most famous gold nuggets in history along with all the stories of who found them and when. Some were found in areas already worked over. The most insane stories obviously from Australia. But most of the larger nuggets were found within a few feet of the surface. Most were eventually sold to the British. Makes you wonder what your steppin on out there!

I detected the Golden Triangle Victoria Australia from 1996-2014 part time on and off. I enjoyed every minute of it. Such an exciting hobby. I found around 25~30 oz. The largest was 3/4 oz found at Tarnagulla. I sold a lot of it during the 90s for around $350 per oz. Today it's worth around $2000 per oz. Dems the brakes .

Ty was your uncle? This the same nugget found in the El Paso Mountains with a metal detector that came in at 13 pounds? If so I got to hold it when it was stashed at a ranch east of Clovis California before it was sold. Got to hold the piece the broke off when it was found also. Lots of 1 pounders came out of area also. Dry washers would've had a fit if they had known what they left behind.

The biggest single mass of gold (not specimen) that I am aware of was found as a gold slab at the Jundee underground mine in Western Australia (6.7 million ounces production total) weighing in at over 280,000 ounces; 1 metre x 5cm x 15 metres. Over 8.7 metric tons. The Holtermann from NSW was a huge specimen that was part of a reef they hacked out with axes due to its richness. Tiny in comparison.

When I used to live in Africa,Ghana , before moving to Canada, I remember my parents decided to kind of like fill up our lawn with just sand and stones,and honestly no one actually knew where they got the sand and stones from and the guys never told us.... But I remember I used to play with the stones and I swear I dugged up a red-yellowish sparkly stone just like the #8 Brazilian Red lady one time but I was like 5yrs old I didnt know what it was so I left it back in the sand..... When I was 6 they covered the sand with concrete pavements.....Now im 18 and every once a while that stone crosses my mind I dont know why

We have a mine we're rehabbing right now to open her back up. Its why I haven't posted many videos lately. The overburden we have to dig out to reach the buried portal is full of gold. Felix Pedro found the first discovery of gold in Alaska. He started the gold rush of 1898. The nugget is mounted under glass in the lobby of the First National Bank downtown Fairbanks. Can't miss it and its guarded by the largest griz you ever saw. The nugget has the basic shape of a football but is jagged. Very historic nugget.

@SaltwaterServr6 жыл бұрын
Gold prospectors and gold miners generally refer to their gold in grams. Assays come back in ounces per ton, and gold mining companies report in ounces per ton produced. Those same major and super majors will also refer to the value of their ore in grams per ton.

Liberty Cave not really. Out of the thousands of prospectors and miners I've spoken with, only a few ever mentioned pennyweights or dimeweights. That runs the gammut from retired miners who worked for one of the super majors like Freeport or BHP-Billiton to the occassional weekend drywasher.
