The list was challenging to put together, and we've already decided to do a part 2 next month. These artists have not only redefined the limits of art but have also challenged the way we view race, identity, and representation.

Hey everyone! My name is Moriah Alise and I'm the founder of Alise Art Group, a visual arts management company that's all about helping artists build sustainable careers. As a friend, a sounding board, and an advice giver to many prominent art collectors, I also love introducing and guiding collectors in building their art collections. I've had many different experiences in this field and as I continue to learn, I feel a passion to share my knowledge with others.

I am also a blak artist and I think it is important to show up for now. There is a real change but the art world still remain a white thing this must change as we Black people are de facto artistically skilled. I wish you the best for 2024.

I had the extraordinary privilege of being a docent for Amoako Boafo’s show at the Seattle Art Museum. Viewers were dazzled and moved by the presence he created for his subjects. I am forever changed by his compassion and sensitivity in ‘elevating and celebrating’ each subject.

Please do the second part ,but make sure you do a deep research about artists who are not "market stars," but their work is or has been as good as those. It's a pity that only artists living or working in the USA and England are the ones who get recognized. Despite all that, this is a good and serious video, and I thank you for that.

This first top 10 was so hard to make! Of course Kehende should be on a list like this. But I thought it was important to balance the list with artist who don’t recieve the recognition they should as well as women. Kehinde will be on the next top 10. 🤍

I agree 100%. El Anatsui, too. I am pleased to see Mark Bradford and Rashid Johnson here, as they should be. I know that portraiture and narrative work is the bread & butter of the black art world, and that abstract does not appeal to such a wide swath of art collectors, but I would love for Moriah to cover more black abstract artists. Pamela Joyner is the only big collector of black abstract artists that I am aware of..... other than myself (on a very small scale)! All that said, Moriah is doing a great job on educating and keeping us up on what's happening in the black art world..... I love this channel and am grateful for her contribution.

because its a lot of pressure on black artist to be BLACK artist, i went to art school and white professors kept pushing me to be blacker. i think a lot of artist feel like that's what gets them in the door. kerry james marshall is the o.g and the innovator but a lot of newer black artist it feels forced to me.

"An artist's duty, as far as I'm concerned, is to reflect the times." -Nina Simone. Depending on your perspective, understanding or knowledge and experience with race- race is connected to power and identity and a source of not only history and storytelling but joy, imagination and possibilities. It’s a profound and intellectual yet practical subject that is a privilege and responsibility to explore if you seek to create art that inspires one to be human in a world that attempts to steal your humanity. Also- outside of the art world, you are punished, attacked, ignored, persecuted and even killed for centering race so art has always been a space and opportunity to process a construct that shapes American life

I struggle with this same subject. I’ve been abstract from day one. Have never painted one human figure in my work. I’m black. But until people see my face they don’t think a black person painted it. I won’t change. We are not a monolith. Must fill all the lanes. Not just one.

@@DearGlorywithMoriahAlise They're all Black, which is why they're on your list. By focusing solely on their skin color, you're diminishing their artistic identity. These individuals are not African; they're American. Only one person on your list is actually from Africa. How sad to be called a black artist or a woman artist rather than an artist. Americans always love to divide and make issues where there is none. Sad.
