1) A (generally) decent person portraying a good person isn't much of a change - It's not 'alien'. (ie. doesn't require method acting to understand what makes a good person good) 2) People only need to justify poor behaviour - No-one even asks if someone starts acting nicer but they'll immediately challenge and condemn when someone is acting like an arsehole.

I have my serious doubts about this people being actors. What they are maybe fearing is... not being one. They go into this "method" thing as a "sure" thing to success and loose themselves. Here's some that I'm surprised weren't even honorable mentions: - Leonardo DiCaprio in The Revenant: Although the director made working conditions hard enough, DiCaprio willingly ate a raw bison liver instead of the fake one he was given (and he's a vegetarian, too). - Russell Crowe in Master and Commander: He demanded that everyone call him "captain" even while off-camera, and he went so far as to demand that everyone wear color-coded clothes according to their characters' ranks. - Daniel Day-Lewis in The Crucible: He never bathed for the entire duration of filming, and he insisted on building his own house himself (which was used in the movie) - Benedict Cumberbatch in The Power of the Dog: His character was a chainsmoker, so he actually smoked excessively during filming to the point where got nicotine poisoning three times.

amazing how that story changes and gets embellished every time its told, and none of it at all is true. Hoffman stayed up for 1 night, but not because his character was supposed to have had no sleep. Hoffman said years later, it was just irresponsible,but I was young. I went to a party the night before, up all night, and straight to set that morning. Hoffman did dose off at one point, Olivier said something to him, and Hoffman said he was out all night. And they both laughed. Both of them years later confirmed that. well I studied method with strasberg, and use a lot of it. Media and the general public has bastardized what MEthod acting is. If you're a Method actor you would know that. Nowadays if anyone is out of line, rude, go too far they say they're method acting. ThAT'S not what it is. For one, Carrey, Shia Lebouf are not method actors. If you see what lebouf has been saying recently, he has problems. That's personal. That has nothing to do with method . It's funny how they only mention the ones that may go too far, instead of the method actors that do not i.e. Paul Muni, Eli Wallach, Monty Clift, James Dean, Paul Newman, Joanne Woodward, Julie Harris, Jane Fonda, Meryl Streep, Ellen Burstyn, Matthew McConaughey, Sally Field, Kim Hunter, Gerladine Page, Shelly Winters...... this vid and others are irresponsible. No one should have videos like this or talk about method unless they've studied it so they know what they're talking about.

I've not read all of the comments, but I thought that when Dustin Hoffman's name was mentioned, there was going to be a discussion of the lengths the actor took during Marathon Man . The following excerpt is from The Guardian article "Method acting can go too far - just ask Dustin Hoffman" written by Michael Simkins: Dustin Hoffman has long been known as one of method acting’s most earnest exponents. A showbiz story involves his collaboration with Laurence Olivier on the 1976 film Marathon Man. Upon being asked by his co-star how a previous scene had gone, one in which Hoffmann’s [sic] character had supposedly stayed up for three days, Hoffmann admitted that he too had not slept for 72 hours to achieve emotional verisimilitude. “My dear boy,” replied Olivier smoothly, “why don’t you just try acting?”
@johnmarengo3988
@johnmarengo3988 Жыл бұрын
that story is a complete lie. Both actors verified it isn't true, yet still is being told. Hoffman stayed up one night. It had nothing to do with his character having been up all night. He said he was young and irresponsible, and went to an all night party and then straight to set in the morning. At one point he was dozing off, and Olivier asked if he was ok. He said he stupidly was up all night at a party. Both just laughed. Olivier never said just try acting. None of that story is true. Media and public has exploited what method acting is, and using these stories about abuse , rudeness ,etc on set, when none of that is what Method acting is

@@johnmarengo3988 Shame on The Guardian for perpetuating a lie. I was also dismayed to learn that Mark Twain did not actually say “Politicians and diapers must be changed often, and for the same reason.” Oh well: “Get your facts first, and then you can distort them as much as you please,” is one of my favorite quotes from Twain--he did say that I hope....

This bugs me a lot because "method" isn't about transgression. It's simply a system taken from Stanislavski's "An Actor Prepares" and subsequent books by those who believe in naturalized performance and his observations on how emotionally grounded performers work.

In additon, Stanislavski's method was bastardized by Lee Strasberg. This is why I like Classical Actors better. Howvever, I honor and respect Daniel Day Lewis who's a Method Actor.
@johnmarengo3988
@johnmarengo3988 Жыл бұрын
glad to hear someone else seeing that. It really bugs me big time. I've studied many approaches, starting in the 70s. I studied Method with Lee Strasberg. Over the decades I've also taught acting, and I use a lot of Method/Strasberg, Stanislavski, Hagen,etc. Media and the general public has totally exploited what Method acting is. It's none of what they say in this vid and other ones. All of them, Hagen, Strasberg, Stanislvasky , said there is no one way. There is no 'one' system or method. It's exploring the character, trying different things. And none of them said to try drugs if playing a drug addict, or gain unhealthy weight. All Method said is know what happens to ones body, emotions,etc when gaining weight, doing drugs,etc. It is about being truthful in imaginary circumstances. So it's being aware of both the realism/truth and the imaginary. I always see 'naturalized' as playing oneself. It is more about finding the character in you. Strasberg was asked many times to write a book on Method acting. He was always apprehensive, as he said, then it feels like the actors bible, this is the way to do it, and there isn't 'a way'. I'm constantly trying new and different things. Stanislavsky was the same, and kept on changing, trying new ways. Stanislavsky would always start his beginning classes saying during this class I'm going to give you many different techniques, exercises, etc to help in creating a great performance. The point is not being stuck with one system. Use what works for you, every actor should take many acting courses, and then create their own method. And all this came about because Stanislavsky was frustrated as an actor. He didn't feel he was good, and he wondered how many of the great Russian actors of that time were able to give consistently brilliant performances. So he set out talking to, watching, looking at the notes in actors scripts , and saw they all did specific things that created great performances. That was the beginning of it. Some actors were doing it before stanislavsky

Sir Lawrence Olivier's advice to Dustin Hoffman was "Why don't you try acting ... it's much easier?" In Humphrey Bogart's day, method acting hadn't reached the extremes common today. Bogie defined it as "Scratch your ass and mumble."

I can tell you the person you spoke to, and this vid is full of crap. Honestly! I've studied Method with many teachers, including Strasberg. None of this is what Method acting is. 'Going too far' has never been taught in Method acting. If one is playing a drug addict, it's about doing research finding out what happens to ones body, physiology, mental state,emotions, never has any method instructor said try heroin so you know how it feels. That some actors go to this extreme, does not make them a method actor. Most of the ones in this vid are not method actors. Carrey isn't, quite a few of the others are not. So if you want to be an actor go for whatever feels right to you. Method acting is profound and produces many great actors. It teaches a 'craft'. All method teachers like strasberg, stanislavsky always said theres no one way, no one technique,exercise or system. You try different ways.

To be honest, I never got the "method" thing - it sounds good, but does it make an actor great? A really great one - in my opinion, but what do I know right? - can switch his character on and off in a second without making a fuss about it.
@btsarmyforever3816
@btsarmyforever3816 Жыл бұрын
It's best you don't give these opinions without knowing what goes on behind the scenes. You cannot switch on and off easily when u deliver intense emotions. If the character's mom has died, how fast do u think the actor is gonna come out of that role? Take responsibility for what you say. FOE should not be misused. Cause if u wish to give such an opinion, you have to be an example first. You can't say "A great bread can be baked in a second in my opinion". You have to prove this opinion first.

I still enjoy Jared Leto's performance as "The Joker" to this day! Having to play a character that was dominated by famous actors like Jack Nicholson, Mark Hamill, Cesar Romero, and Health Ledger is no easy task. To Leto's credit, he made it is own character, didn't feel copied by any of the other Jokers we have seen, and felt more like a "comic book" version of the joker if he was a "mob boss" The fact that Zack Snyder brought him back to play the Joker in his version of "The Justice League" says a lot about Leto's performance.

I can name over the last hundred years of film, how many primadonna's, elitists, egotists, difficult actors/actresses there have been, and yet not method actors. I would only acknowledge method acting,or anything for that matter from someone who has studied it, knows it well. I can tell you from having studied with Lee Strasberg, none of this is true. Media and public need to separate ones acting approach with actors who are just assholes , and that's from any approach or method. Jim Carrey, Shia Lebouf, Heath Ledger and more are not Method actors

In regards to the Joker, I feel like Jared Leto tried TOO hard in Suicide Squad. I don't think he was a bad choice of actor for the role, I just think he went about the whole thing the wrong way. Almost like he didn't truly understand the character. However, I do think his performance as Joker in the Knightmare scene of Zack Snyder's Justice League was leaps and bounds better than anything he did in Suicide Squad. It felt less like a Juggalo turned mod boss and more like THE Joker.

The thing with method acting is: The film crew should be ready for it. If they want the best, they gotta work for it/ endure it. The actor is the one doing all the extreme physical and emotional acting. Their mind is in a deep and unstable place just so they can deliver good acting. Their co-stars also gotta understand this. Everything should be discussed prior hand. Method acting is very serious as they don't allow characters to bleed through easily. The downside is the actor is depressed for months to come out fo character. I feel a therapist should be on set and visit their home during after the entirety of the filming. And the ppl working with the actor should be tolerant. You can't say this actor is an a-hole when literally he is method acting as an a-hole. After he comes out of the role, he will feel worse than he already feels. Most importantly, the co-stars need to feel safe. Cause they may choose to not method act.
