I miss 2 mistakes: The first is not reading good art books. The second is drawing only from the imagination

I think that reading quality art books, and studying quality resources would likely fall under studying the fundamentals. I'm an artist who generally draws from imagination most of the time, But you're right... Failing to find and use quality references is a good one.

The first one is definitely something that affects me. I desperately long to be around other artists. I post in a couple of communities online with minimal activity, but I don't have any friends irl that are into art like I am. It can be tough to continue drawing and trying to improve when you have very little engagement with other artists and very little feedback besides family telling you, "good job."

Hanging out in art live streams on KZfaq and twitch can be beneficial, but it depends on the artist that's streaming. Yeah, the close family and friends "oh that's great" comments tend to sound pretty hollow when you're looking for real feedback.

My neighbours and I get together once a week to paint, since mid March. None of us are very accomplished. How did it start? I asked one of my friends if I could come over and bring art supplies so we could paint. She said she couldn't paint in front of other people. So I said I'll bring the supplies, regardless and if you want to, fine and if not, no big deal. Long story short, she did try painting that day and she got interested and excited. So we invited a mutual friend who was game to try. The three of us know we aren't the best, but we are doing what makes us feel happy and we are determined. Anyone who is willing to try art and to learn and practice, would be welcomed by you, I am sure. Find people who are willing to work at art. Even if they are not accomplished nor knowledgable. Make a small, private Facebook group. Make it fun.

Regarding to no. 9, I've never sold my work, but recently looking into it as a way to fund my going to University in September. I am in NO way a professional, and basically have no artistic skill without someone elses work in front of me to reference from. I've only watched 2 of your videos just now and I had no idea how much I still need to learn. It's very refreshing to know that I'll always have a goal to work towards, I thought I was going to be stuck just referencing from other people forever. Thank you.

Great vid! It's a shame that this vid doesn't have more views. There is some really great advice in here. I do get intimidated by how much there is to learn about art. There is just so much to learn. I see a video on youtube and I'm like "oh I need to learn about that, let me watch that" and then I watch another one and another one, and pretty soon my head is spinning with so much info. Also, you talked about the ratio of good art to bad art. If you are working on something and you realize it's becoming bad art, should you quit on the piece entirely or fix what is wrong? I guess it would depend on how far along you are and how much needs to be changed, hu? I would think that if not too much needs to be changed, you should fix it and continue going along with it. There have been times when I'm working on something and then I'm like "Oh I should have done it a completely different way." At that point, should I start over with something else, or just continue the current piece and just remember the better way for the next piece?

With choosing to re draw or just finish, that will probably vary quite a bit from artist to artist and from piece to piece, but I think if you're honest with yourself about how you feel about it, you'll find the correct answer. It's mainly important to make sure fear or anxiety isn't influencing your decision. Thanks so much for your comment!

Glad to see your activity. I don't remember if I said that already but you've got a nice workplace setting for your videos. You don't seem to be shy in front of the camera. So if you just upload regularly you'll get a big audience. Maybe also speak faster. Not at once, just practice bit by bit into it. It's same as art - mileage is everything. I don't know if your YT channel means a lot to you. As I said, you've got it all set so well it feels like a waste if you don't give it enough time. All famous art bloggers started small. Sycra was mute, then he was shy, then he had like a thousand videos... It was a long way. I can totally see you getting just as high. Would be lovely. You're doing great, Galen. Just keep swimming. =) I mean, come on, follow your own advice from here. ;)

ive got a question about pen tablet. I have this paranoia where i have to make sure my table,chair screen and pen tablet are aligned in the ame exact position everytime i draw/paint because i feel like if they are positioned slightly different eveyrtime my hand skill will not improve properly since what is a straight line today might be 10 degrees off tomorrow.... does the brain adjust to this? am i being too paranoid or is this a real thing?

the main thing I'd be worried about with that is potentially causing yourself back pain. I don't think that it will have any real effect on your art unless the difference in angle is very extreme. And even if it did cause any differences, you would notice it as soon as you viewed the work from another angle. This can be checked by flipping your canvas horizontally/vertically during your drawing process in order to give yourself a different perspective on your work. Hope that helps! Thanks for your comment. :)

Brilliant advice, number 6. I procrastinate working on a piece of artwork because I don't want to fail. Which I know is stupid.
@ArtbyGalen
@ArtbyGalen 5 жыл бұрын
It's something we've all done in some capacity or another. I think it would only be stupid to come to that realization and then continue letting it control us. I read a beautiful quote the other day... "you can fix or edit a bad page... but you can't fix/edit a blank page." So, regardless of how you're thinking or feeling, get after it!

Great video and sexy pie animation ♥ Question from someone who has trouble making other art friends & collaborating on stuff; any personal advice on how to find peers? Classes can be expensive, and finding a creative job to make friends would be easy if it wasn't for the find part

Doing things like interacting on people's art posts that you like, art streams are great for it as well, and joining discord servers geared around art can all be great ways to meet and interact with artists. Being shy can be a difficult hurdle to get over, but a lot of artists will be able to relate to that.
