These mistakes are keeping the villains from getting what they want and its probably better this way. For example: Duma from Fire Emblem Echoes is not an evil dragon just one who has been corrupted by his own dragon powers after centuries of living while Jedah is a twisted faithful servant of Duma who has Alm on the ropes when he makes Celica sell her soul to Duma and use her to kill Alm. But when Alm pulls out the Falchion and uses it to kill Celica only for Mila to use the last of her power bring Celica back to life and back to normal, Jedah's cocky attitude combined with his blind faith and his unwillingness to accept a Valentia without gods leads to Duma being saved and Jedah, along with the rest of the Duma Faithful, wiped out.

Speaking from experience; it's very difficult to write a compelling villain. Though I would argue that the villain making mistakes humanizes them. The real key to remember is that nobody is the bad guy in their own story. Having a bad guy that the audience can say "That could happen to me," makes them interesting and sympathetic. Without that they are alien and unrelatable. A villain who gets up in the morning and says "Time to be an evil dick!" is much less compelling than a bad guy forced into doing bad things for what he believes are good reasons.

There's a card game by James Earnest, originally called "Before I Kill You, Mr. Bond", re-released as "James Earnest's Totally Renamed Card Game" that hangs a HUGE lampshade on these tropes. In the game, you play as an evil mastermind who is building a convoluted base of operations. Players capture spies, which they can immediately dispatch OR keep alive longer for higher rewards by using basically every item on this video. It's a lot of fun and perfectly captures the feel of either being incredibly elaborate or pragmatic as a villain.

Number 11: Wardrobe Choices. Sometimes being flamboyant and flashy is appropriate, just not when you're a (super)villain. Sure, there may be benefits to dressing up in the most gaudy outfit on the planet, but if you have trouble performing even the smallest of tasks because of it, you probably need to rethink your appearance. If you simply choose your outfit wisely and make it suit your needs for your dastardly evil plans, recognition and reputation will follow suit. Edna said it, and Syndrome lived it: No capes.

I knew what number one was as soon as I read the title. It must be as old as the movies themselves and the best and most obvious example I can think of is that of Tuco in TGTBTU, when he shoots the guy who has come to shoot him while taking a bath and who starts explaining why he is doing it and then Tuco says his famous line:" If you gonna shoot, shoot, don't talk".

You know, even if a Villain manages to avoid all of those mistakes, they can still lose. Case and point: Shan Yu from Mulan Shan Yu literally manages to avoid every single one of those classic mistakes. You can't even argue that he underestimated his enemies because he dared China to send him their strongest armies and he went after Mulan with no hesitation or mercy. In the end, Mulan won because she was smarter and had the skill to pull off her plans which is made more impressive by the fact that Shan Yu was also highly intelligent and skilled. The point I'm making is if the Villain avoids these classic mistakes, it can make the Hero's victory even more significant

#2 was my personal #1. That being said, the second biggest mistake I see in my personal favorite action stories is when the villain either doesn't adhere to the heroes warnings at the beginning or midpoint, or when the villain decides to get back up after a hero allows them to surrender.

Bad choice using Ozymandius in #1. He explained his plan after it had succeeded. There was no chance to use his information to stop him

Thanos spent years understanding and planning, he knew exactly what he was doing when he had those stones, his comprehension was pretty good. He spent years on his plan

I wonder what the first ever movie/ tv show/play to use the "I should've liked you when I had the chance" line lol... bc I believe I hear thwart line in about half of all action movies I've ever seen in my life! lol

This pretty much goes along with telling the villain the plan. I’ve pretty much noticed if they wouldn’t even tell the hero they are there at all it would work out. An example would be Avengers age of Ultron. If when Ukraine was born or created if he had just killed Jarvis and then high tailed it out if there he probably could have completed his plan. If he hadn’t went after the mind stone the Avengers probably wouldn’t have realized he was around until someone noticed Jarvis wasn’t working or even at all. And also Vision wouldn’t have been created so he wouldn’t have been blocked out if the internet by him.

Megaton once realized the problem with talking too much in Beast Wats, but it unfortunately never stuck and he continued to gloat throughout his career.

My favorite mistake is number 8, 5, 4, 3 and 2 for example: Zouken and Shinji always underestimate Shirou and always abused Sakura. This come to bite them in the ass, especially in the Heaven's feel route, where their smug attitude causes them to be killed by Sakura who has become a Yandere for Shirou.

I remember in the movie Return to Oz Mombi actually pointed out a mistake that the Nome King made. He was having Dorothy and her friends guess which object is the Scarecrow. They only had three guesses each. If they failed they were transformed into objects. Mombi asks, "Why didn't you transform them right away?" The Nome King replies, "It's more fun this way." While it was more exciting in the movie Mombi was right. Had the Nome King actually transformed them into objects right away none of them would've had any chance to rescue the Scarecrow. And Princess Ozma would've been imprisoned in the mirror forever.

#6, #2 and #1 are the ones I many times have complained/pondered about. I like when the hero(es) wins, but still if they win because of 6, 2 and/or 1, I'm not entirely satisfied about the story...

This is why Master Xehanort and Ozymandias rock as villains. They fulfilled their carefully laid out plans to the point where no one could stop him, THEN gloated to the heroes! The final battle of KHIII was honestly just a toss-up at that point. An artificial χ-blade vs. the power of friendship, no other variables allowed. As for Ozy, he just thought of freaking EVERYTHING! The methodology really isn't rocket science.
