The Duchess of Windsor Collection reached the highest world record for a single-owner Jewelry sale ever conducted. This royal assemblage on the List of Famous Collections was originally sold in 1987, by Sotheby's in Geneva for the record price of $53.5 million. The Wallis Simpson Jewelry Collection consisted of 214 pieces.
The Duchess of Windsor Jewels were unique, not only because of the record price they fetched but also due to the fact that these pieces immortalise the most controversial love story of modern times. The Jewels that comprise of the Duchess of Windsor Collection, which King Edward VIII of the British Royal Family, lavished on Wallis Warfield Simpson were only part of the love story though.

Very nice video, stayed focused on the jewels and not the politics. It reminds me of a section from Agatha Christie's "Death on the Nile." Simon did not like Lynette because she was bossy. But, he did like the thought of her money. Wallis may have found the duke vapid and tedious to be with, but she did like the status of being with him and the jewels he gave her. If you have to be trapped, you might as well be trapped in the best of surroundings.

The comment i made in deference to commonality of situation between the present heir apparent and HRH the Duke of Windsor had absolutely Nothing to do with money. Get your brains out of your pocket and THINK about what I commented on. I don't happen to give a DAMN about money of the Crown. That simply was not at all my point. Enough is said.

I was lucky enough to see the Persian Empire Jewels, when I was visiting my dad for the summer in Tehran in 1966. It was truly astonishing to go into the vaults...rooms and rooms and rooms of them. It made the British Empire Jewels somewhat puny. He was on loan as a consultant to Iran Air, from Pan American Airways. We were so blessed to have visited some of the most wonderful places, during the Golden Age of Flying. Such stunningly beautiful women, dressed in Western clothes back then in Iran. No words. Tragic how it all ended.

@@tobyhoff5158 Toby, it was such an amazing life, while it lasted. My brother and I are very blessed. During that summer visit, I turned 16. My dad arranged a birthday party for me with their friends, at the Tehran Hilton. Eight waiters in tux's, came out holding two flaming shish kebabs each for dinner, with Persian dancing music playing. It was spectacular. Belly dancer came out later in the evening for entertainment. Nothing topped that birthday! P.S. Talk about a different world. I flew to Tehran from NYC by myself. Even got myself home from JFK to Staten Island all by myself.

@@malamutmadre4930 He didn’t have a lot of money by the 1960s. He mostly wore the same clothes he had been wearing for decades. And the Duchess who did wear the newest fashions, was mostly given clothes by designers. She was a style icon and got a lot of publicity about what she wore. She had dementia the last 10 years of her life and spent it in their Paris home. I’ve seen interviews with their domestic servants and they took care of her. She didn’t even have a Nurse or trained caregiver to look after her. When she died, Mohammed El Fayed bought the house. And had it restored to be exactly how it was when the Duke and Duchess were alive and well. The Duke might have gotten a small amount of money from the Crown, but certainly not enough to support him in the manner he was accustomed to. But he and the Duchess still lived like they were wealthy. And they weren’t.

Edward never wanted to be king, so the idea to run off with Wallace was relatively easy to make. Love on her part was questionable. The night he died, she was out partying with her friends. He died with his nurse in attendance and was begging the nurse to find Wallace. He was dead for hours when she finally came home. The Wales brooch was bought by Prince Charles from the Taylor auction. When Taylor bought the piece, the bidder against her was Prince Charles. He claimed that he wasn't going to lose it again.

The jewels were absolutely stunning but this was not a great love affair. Wallis never wanted Edward to abdicate nor did she want to matty him. She felt very trapped. Wallis loved her husband but they played the game to long. They were in it for the favors, social standing & money. Mr. Simpson did made a great deal of money from contracts and business deals thrown his way by Edward. Basically he pimped Wallis out. Wallis was planning to leave Edward after the coronation but he had a complete breakdown and she was forced to stay. Letters found a few years ago prove it. They were written by Wallis to her husband. She writes of how much she lives and misses him. How all she wants is to be his wife again. She also explains how upset & devasted she was that their hope for a future together were destroyed when Edward foolishly abdicated. Wallis felt like she had no choice but to marry Edward. I believe she at times was cruel towards him because she was full of regret. Edward acted more of a child then a man and no woman wants to be married to a child. I would have thought that after all those years of having to be the strong one and constantly reassuring edward and babying him she would have come to hate him a great deal.

He wanted to continue on as he had when he was younger. He loved and wanted all the perks but he didn't want the responsibility. He was eager to give up the crown. Even after abdicating he expected to keep all those perks. He even expected the crown to give Wallace a title after they were married. Of course they refused.

@Nancy Fox Probably. I can't imagine being married to a man that sees you as mommy and throws constant jewels your way as is a sign of insecurity. It's not that I don't like jewelry.... I love jewelry, but hers were attached like a leash. I did read she still loved her husband and they wrote letters back and forth even after she married Edward. What a betrail. I think she just couldn't be faithful to one man..That must have drove Edward into jealous obsession. I also read she couldn't have children - something about her female or not so female organs....

There's a huge difference between Harry & Edward. Edward wanted to escape his responsibilities, Harry was forced to leave an intolerable situation. Wallis was actually very selfish and never loved Edward. Her letters to her ex-husband prove that. All she wanted was to get back together with him and get away from Edward but his endless neediness had her trapped. Meghan loves Harry and gave up her life in America to be with him. Unfortunately the "royal" family & the brit people did not want a half black woman nor any of their mixed race children in the "royal" family tree. I know people like to compare the two couples but they share nothing but a name.

My father worked for American Export Lines in the orchestra in the 1950's. Back then air travel was still not that common, so people got on cruise ships - (The Independence, the SS America, The United States, and the Constitution) ...especially to the Mediterranean. The world's 'most famous dinner guests' as the Windsors were called, traveled with a full entourage, trunks galore, the Duke always carrying their little doggies....and embroidered 'HRH' linen. They would bring their own bedsheets with the royal crest on them. My father said the Duke often looked like he had swallowed something disagreeable. During one especially tough Atlantic crossing, the ocean pitched and rolled, and the band instruments were rolling all over the dance floor; people locked themselves in their cabins. Dad came out to check on things, and the piano rolled and skidded across the floor, slamming him into a wall....Just then the Duke appeared in the doorway, evidently out on a stroll, for a smoke break. He looked at my Dad, then sniffed, "Pity we couldn't dance," he said. My father said he wanted to pitch the SOB over the railing, and might well have done so, were it not for his broken hand.

The Duchess of Windsor had one of the greatest jewelry collections of any woman. I wish I could afford the Flamingo Brooch. For some reason, that one piece has always intrigued me so. Whether The Duchess loved The Duke or not, they stayed together for the rest of their lives. She begged him not to abdicate and threatened to leave him but he said, "I will slit my throat". He was not interested in being a King. I just wish certain people would stop putting all the blame on Wallis. We are reliving this tale, today, through The Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

The Great Mughal is now renamed and is in the sceptre if the Russian Crown Jewels.

This proves that you can be stylish if you have enough money. Someone else can design it but you wear it. The emerald ring was a thing of beauty.

The jewels are absolutely stunning. But I always thought he looked a rather sad man after he got married. I remember the Edward R. Murrow interview with them. He looked so sad and never smiled once during the interview. She smiled a lot.

I’m still wondering how he could afford to commission all this jewellery unless he brought his own gems which suggests he raided the royal jewels before he left!

Cali Kiwi. That's exactly what he did. It was reckoned that he took over one million pounds of jewels, and that's at 1936 value. All the money from selling the royal jewels stayed in France. What a surprise.

Cartier and VC&A is where most of the jewelry comes from. They probably gifted the jewelry to them for the advertisement.

Excellent video very informative. Who has the jewelry today ? Were some given to the Royal Family ? Many pieces were bought when he was still king meaning the money came partly from tax payers. Just sickening, to an undeserving woman. Thank you if anyone is aware of.

Hi Andrew, missed this along the way. I read a bio of the Duchess, not very flattering, accused her of being a spy for the Chinese early on, sd she did not want Edward to give up the throne but to hold out to have that and her marriage to him. Didnt happen, claimed she was ever after rather disrespectful to him privately, on & on, quite bad. The rubies early on are quite amazing, that engagement ring, whew, the cats are ofc fabulous, as are the huge diamonds at the end. Have you been too busy to make videos these days, I suspect so. Hope you are always well my friend, I await new dreams from you. Much love, many blessings to you! ~~Chanel

The firs one of the lot: A gold, diamond rather, digger from the rank of the master class. "They sacrificed everything for each other?" Really? Friends, you're looking at a one-way street through and through which inevitably led to Place Vendome, where all the "joailliers" made sure to call the idiot "Roi."
