A great video, one of the things I've always liked about Wheel of Time is that you're lucky if all you face is an 8 ft tall genetically engineered killing machine. I would say you were pretty spot on with the list too, figured Gholam wound top the list; those things are insane.

When reading the books, I felt that the Golam had the opposite of plot armor. It was an enemy so powerful that the plot had to limit it for reasons that don't really make sense. It's afraid of crowds or being seen for... REASONS. It's also following the only person in the world that, as far as we know, possesses the means to injure it. Why didn't they just send it to the white tower? None of the Aes Sedai or warders would have had any chance of stopping it. It could literally kill everyone there. Or send it to assassinate various world leaders. Or just send it into battle against literally anything. It's almost a plot hole.

Well... no. Gholam are unstoppable for individuals, but large amounts of people will still be able to negate it. Weapons can't hurt it permanently, but they can still hack it to pieces and keep hacking and hacking forever. Anybody who can throw let's say one hundred men on the problem will be able to stop the Gholam forever. And yes, it could do a lot of damage, but that damage is irrelevant. The only person on the whole planet who truly matters for the Shadow is Rand. Nobody else can allow it to win. That's why the Gholam is coming after Mat - to hurt Rand. Killing several dozen random Aes Sedai wouldn't even register with him.

In the Eye of the World the worms are "afraid of what lives in the high passes". I want to know what those things in the high passes are. I always pictured someone that could fly, maybe a jumara with wings?

My personal theory was alwqys that the worms, livibg beneath the surface, are afraid of the soöid rock of the mountains and not being able to dig themselves up mqkes them, relativly, vulnerable. So they are afarid of the normal shdowspawn there, because they lose their largest advantage.

Great video! I'm loving watching these. My one comment: I don't know exactly where I would put it, but I would put the Draghkar higher. I get that you're dealing with book content. But I've always felt that in the books the Draghkar were underplayed and characters got lucky with them, very unrealistically. You have a creature that can swoop in from the air near-silently, and all it has to do is make a sound and if no one else is around that didn't hear that sound to help you, you are 100% worse than dead. That's a horrifying creature. Personally, I feel like Jordan realized he made something way too powerful so he just threw them into situations where characters got lucky and then mentioned them less.

Are you planning on doing a video on Mashidar? He was one of the more fascinating creatures we encountered in the series. I had a theory that he was at one point a Gholam who had survived the War of Power and the Breaking. He was described as having similar characteristics to a Gholam but different enough that I figured he was, like a jumera, an evolution of the larval Gholam.

As recently as a few years ago, I learned that a gray man is a real thing. In the prepper world, a gray man is someone who can move through crowds without drawing attention to themselves. It’s basically a good skill to have after “the shit hits the fan” as the preppers say. It’s good to be able to move through a town without making the people suspicious. I tried to research it to figure out where the idea originated

Exactly. The “gray man” is just another term for camouflage in a crowd. Think “human cloaking device” - achieved through slowish, non-threatening movements, nondescript clothing, lack of eye contact and an overall ability to blend in. Per itstactical: “The gray man is the person who moves around the periphery of our awareness without creating any stimulus. This makes that person invisible for all practical purposes.”

Plus, are all the other shadowspawn just waiting at shaol ghul or are they created for each purpose the forsaken had for them.... i.e. samael and the dark hounds.

@4rtifex
@4rtifex 5 жыл бұрын
While searching for Sakarnen in Shara, Demandred encountered an adult jumara at Rai'lair, The Hearttomb. Somehow the creature had found the ancient cavern as a juvenile, and had matured to adulthood inside. The resulting creature had been too large to fit back out through the mouth of the cave, and so it had made the cavern its home, eating anything that entered. It was described by Demandred as being easily 100 feet long. Demandred only just barely managed to slay the creature, and afterwards commented to himself that had he not known exactly what it had been and how to go about killing it, he would not have survived the encounter.

I totally forgot about number 2 (Honestly, I have to look them up because I don't recall when they are introduced in the books. It's been a while since I read that...). The gholam which continuously hunted Matt was actually ordered to hunt down all three of Matt, Perrin, and Rand. It just happened to come across Matt first. Also, there are some mild hints that the gholam had somewhat given up on Matt after being harmed by the foxhead medallion, and was tracking down Rand instead. Matt became the hunter, and as he pursued the gholam, it seemed to lead him more and more in the direction of where Rand was at those times. Of course, whenever Matt got close, the gholam would return to its efforts against him.

@Gunleaver
@Gunleaver 5 жыл бұрын
I only watched this, because there are not 10 Shadowspawn and I wanted to see what the list was. Now I see it's because there are three non-Shadowspawn on it. The forgers are clearly made with the power specific to the Shadow, but the zomara are not definitively known to be so. They might be an ordinary construct like the Nym. In any event, they aren't really shadowpawn like the others. You might as well put the Myrdraal swords on the list. And Grey Men are not shadowspawn. If they are on the list, the Forsaken should be as well. Both are ordinary humans, spawned by testicles and uteruses, who make a deal with the Dark One. So really, this is the top 7 list, which was only achieved by breaking the initial rules by including the worms and jumara, who never appear in the main sequence books and are cheating to split one creature into two different entries. Also, Draghkar are not incredible assassins. We only ever see them succeed outdoors and at night, there is no especially about it. Grey Men, on the other hand, can penetrate incredible levels of security, and can strike at people both indoors and out of doors. No one loses a fight to a draghkar, so it's not like their inhuman talents make them all that effective. Draining someone's soul is also a far more time-consuming process, which is not exactly ideal for an assassin. For the record, the Wheel of Time Companion names jumara and worms as the same creature, does not list the zomara as Shadowspawn or a creature of the Dark One, as it does Trollocs, Darkhounds, Myrdraal & Draghkar.

@rawdawg3234
@rawdawg3234 5 жыл бұрын
I disagree. The gray men had to go through a process to become gray men. They're more than just dark friends. The forsaken are high ranking dark friends. But you could make the argument that once resurrected they are then shadowspawn. The worms were created by Aginor along with the other shadowspawn and are featured in the books. Doesn't Fain kill one easily?
@Gunleaver
@Gunleaver 5 жыл бұрын
@@rawdawg3234 Fain might have in the Sanderson books, but Sanderson's command of the world-building details is not perfect. At any event, at that point Fain was close to some sort of apotheosis and we really can't infer anything about the relative abilities of things he kills. Anyway, my argument was that the worms & jumara are the same thing and should not occupy 2 different slots on the list. It would be like saying "my top 5 list of amphibians is: newts, salamanders, frogs, toads & tadpoles". You only reach the number by doubling up. As regards Forsaken & grey men, the Forsaken have something done to them which connects them to the Dark One, enables them to channel the True Power, compels shadowspawn to obey them & protects the males from the taint on saidin. Rand figures this out and cuts Asmodean off from the Dark One. As to whether or not it is similar in kind or degree to what is done to the Gray Men, they are still humans, spawned by other humans. If they belong on a list of shadowspawn, than so do channels who are turned by 13×13.
@Unlitedsoul
@Unlitedsoul 5 жыл бұрын
@@rawdawg3234 Shadowspawn and shadow-twisted are two different things. One is entirely a creation of the shadow via magic. The other is something natural that has been twisted by the shadow via magic. While the end result is somewhat the same, there is a sharp distinction. I would state that gray men and the forsaken are shadow-twisted. Fain does not kill an adult jumara, but merely a worm. There are no adult jumaras in the main books, as the worms in the Blight cannot transform. There are no other accounts of them in other regions of "Rand Land". However, there are apparently adult jumaras in Shara, and might even be in portions of the Three Fold Land.
@Unlitedsoul
@Unlitedsoul 5 жыл бұрын
@@Gunleaver I get your point, and I agree with you on the gray men. However, the worms in the Blight are not the same as those in other regions which can transform into adulthood as the insectoid jumara. First off, they cannot transform within nor escape the Blight. Secondly, they may be larger and more powerful than the worms of other regions due to this. The difference here would be like comparing maggots. The first is a normal maggot that eventually becomes a fly after a few days. It retains a normal size and strength before it has eaten enough rotted bacteria to energize its transformation. The second is a maggot that has been modified genetically that continuously eats, grows, and learns because it cannot transform... yet still gorges itself in order to do so. It remains a maggot, but an evolved maggot that is much larger and more powerful than its ilk, and as such... hunts larger meals. Also, the worms in the Blight are known to work in packs, while jumara in other regions are thought to work alone. It's a minor distinction, perhaps, but a distinction nevertheless and can be used as justification for listing both. Personally, I think he should have probably stuck to a top 5 list here.

I personally believe that since this is possible, and that they are born about as often as channelling humans are... coupled with the fact that myrddraal are human "throw backs", that they could possibly have been channellers if born human. It hasn't been proven, of course, but I do think it's a valid theory. As for their actual powers, those are all provided either by the Dark One, the forsaken, or by the weapons they wield. The shadow powers you mention were theorized on by their creator Aginor. He suggests that they might be out of phase with time and reality, but this theory was never proven. Wait, 5% of Trollocs become Myrddraal? That doesn't seem right... There isn't nearly enough Myrddraal for the number of Trollocs we see. While reading, I always had the impression that there was about one Myrddraal per 200-300 Trollocs. I know that not all of them would be with Trollocs, but I don't think it would compensate all the difference.
@Unlitedsoul
@Unlitedsoul 5 жыл бұрын
Ummm... 1 out of 200 is 0.5%. 5% would be 10 out of 200. So, if anything, 5% means far more Myrddraal than you were thinking (by ten times as many). That does seem right, as most bands of trollocs have 1 Myrddraal for every 50 or so unless a particularly strong Myrddraal is leading them (there are ranging accounts from bands as small as 10 to as large as 500 being lead by a sigle Myrdraal, but most tend to be in the 30-50 range). These are only the Myrddraal battle leaders, and not counting those used for other means such as hunting channellers, aiding the foresaken, and patrolling Shayol Ghul, Trakan'dar, the Town, and that region of the Blight. If there are 2 million trollocs as suggested in the video (not entirely certain where that number comes from, but it seems somewhat accurate), 5% would mean that there are 100,000 Myrddraal. Your rate of 1 per 200 (the higher rate of your estimate) would be only 10,000 Myrddraal.

SPOILERS***************** If gholam are so fast, then how did a wounded Mat scare off one in Ebou Dar? I know he had a necklace, but still. He didn't it use for a large portion of the fight, he has no superhuman speed (unlike a gholam), he has no superhuman strength (unlike a gholam). This is the problem with creating overpowered enemies for our heroes. On one hand, you want them to be powerful, so they can be an obstacle for our heroes. On the other hand, our heroes must somehow survive/defeat them. And in this case, well, Mat should be dead and buried.

piotr jurkowski Spoilers The gholam had orders to avoid being seen, and Mat was able to get near a crowd of people. The first time they fought, it didn’t understand how Mat could hurt it bc it had never been injured before.

@@rossj4755 In their first fight there is a pretty long time (long in a fight) when Mat doesn't use his necklace and the gholam is not hurt at all. Which means gholam is not scared/surprised by being hurt in that time. The only explanation I can think of (other than obvious plot armor aka luck factor) is gholam toying with Mat for a time.

@@errtu123 Is it actually a long time? I thought it was like 15 seconds. But also, Mat is extremely lucky, so basically anything that can luckily happen to keep him alive was going to happen during that fight haha

the title of this video is "Top 10 Most Dangerous Shadowspawn", not the most powerful. Thus, I don't think the Zomara even deserve the #10 slot; they're harmless.

That's the most funny thing about fantasy casting! Most of these actors would never sign off for a (pretty minor, at first) tv show.

I would have put the Jumara before the Gholam. The Gholam is more of an assassin. While he is pretty much unstoppable and could have killed the entirety of the white tower, so could the Jumara. And it would have been faster, bloodier and more destructive. If you wanted to defeat an army and you had the choose either one of them, I would want the Jumara by my side. I would have loved to, idk, see Demandred ride it during the Last Battle or something. Other than that, great list. But, uhm, why didn't you put the swarms on the list instead of the Somara?
@Unlitedsoul
@Unlitedsoul 5 жыл бұрын
Theoretically, a jumara can be killed using conventional weapons if one is skilled enough to do so (as was the case with Demandred). A gholam cannot. In fact, the only reason Matt was finally able to destroy the one hunting him was with a group of items that was not supposed to exist and came to be only due to his surviving the game with the Finn. Also, if sent to do so, a gholam would most likely destroy a jumara quite easily, considering that a jumara would have no means of harming one... but a gholam can harm a jumara. As for you prefering to have a jumara at your side, even Aginor could not control them. How would you do so, when its creator could not? Even Demandred would not have been able to do this, as you suggest, else why would he have had to kill the one he faced. A gholam can be controlled, as long as you are understood to be its master. I think I'd rather have the stronger creature that I can control, than the slightly weaker creature which could turn on me at any instant. Finally, "swarms" are not shadowspawn.

I would be very interested in your thoughts of the most powerful users of Tel'aran'rhiod. I've had several debates with myself on who the strongest would be in that realm. I think the top 2 would be a toss up between Perrin or Egwene. Thoughts?

Slayer told once that he could kill the Chosen. Maybe he was bluffing but the main weapon of the people who enters the realm is the Power and it means nothing to Slayer, Elyas and Perrin.

Lanfear was clearly very strong there, and she claimed to be the best of the forsaken there. Also egwene was completely overshadowed by Perrin and is probably well behind Perrin, Slayer, lanfear, hopper and maybe some others too.
