+John Watson allow me to present my argument. have you read order of the phoenix and half blood prince? you wouldn't be supporting yates of you had. secondly, I agree DH 1 and 2 are good movies but it lacked the depth of relationship of harry ron and hermione. all movies yates directed lacked the bond the trio shared in the books. he basically killed the spirit of the books, omitted so much goood stuff from ootp and hbp and added irrelevant stuff. I could write an entire article on why yates is a horrible director tbh but lets just agree to disagree if you still think he did good job

Tyler Blankenship actually the only reason why they didnt do that was because they loved Shia LaBeouf in the role, but didnt think itd be healthy for him to go through that body change. They were actually planning on having him gain and lose the weight.

I agree! It's one of the best book to movie adaptations and it was a really great movie in its own right. The only real change was not making Stanley big in the movie at the start, and that was because it would be super hard on any actor to gain and then lose so much weight over the course of filming in the way he does in the book. But honestly, that's totally acceptable to me, as it's putting an actor's health and safety first. :3

+Reiden Lightman for the usual treatment hollywood gives books, it was pretty faithful. No major plot points were changed, if you compare with happened to other book adaptations. But yeah, i feel you, I didn't liked the way they adapted it either, but I understand why is in the list.
@FAN1TDI

The first two movies were criticized a bit for being too faithful, and surprisingly, the third movie, which variated and omitted more details than the first two, was critically aclaimed. I would agree that David Yates' movies omitted so many subplots and good moments, but did a good job at adapting the largest books into 2 hours movies.

+Myrest Harry destroyed the wand, the changing staircases were made for the film, catching the snitch didn't result in winning (it gave the team 150 points and ended the game), there was no Peeves the Poltergeist, Pettigrew doesn't die, and Ron doesn't step on feet all the time. Just a few differences without looking at a book or website.

No, the HP movies were not faithful to the books. It couldn't be, there's no way they could have fit all the parts on the screen. They'd be better adapted as miniseries. But the unforgivable change is removing Dobby from movies 3-6. Dobby appears in almost all the books. It's all that backstory that gives an event in Deathly Hallows its kick. In the movies, Harry and the others haven't seen Dobby since Chamber of Secrets, so the kick doesn't make as much sense.

Let's not forget about how there's no explanation for Harry having that mirror fragment, and how it DIDN'T just come from the mirror that Aberforth had, *_which still doesn't even explain how he got it_*.

Dobby wasn't in the third book, but yeah that was one of the less forgiving changes. Personally, I hate most how they never explained several things properly. Do you realize that the entirety of the major prophecy was never mentioned in any of the movies?

Hey guys. Wanna feel a little better about Harry Potter? Daniel was originally going to wear green contacts. You're entitled to your opinion, but you're wrong. There is no logical reason for the governments of earth to hope to oppose Dr Manhattan or think that he would cause cities to explode. Also, ozy destroyed all evidence of any thing related to the creation of the squid in the comic. In the movie, the machine that blew up the cities was public knowledge. Someone could easily connect those dots.

@Oyajitchi 8 жыл бұрын
+shane55pwnt The only difference wasn't just the ending though. For one, the characters were made to seem more action-y and unbelievable. One thing I liked about the comic was even though it had science fiction based characters and whatnot, like Dr.Manhattan, it had a lot of realism behind it; making you relate more to the characters rather than a comic book character that can fly or have super speed. Dr.Manhattan was also a contrast to the normality of the other characters. There is more that I find wrong with the movie adaptation, but that is just one thing that bothered me imo.

regina simpson I agree, while the material isn't great on either side this. Twilight is one of the only movie adaptations I've ever seen where I understood changes they made and the things they left out like I never felt like anything was needlessly done...which is pretty impressive for what they had to work with. They did their damn best and what's really sad about it is how much better they did then people who GREAT stuff to work with. It's crazy to think about the juxtaposition of it...the people with a garbage book that could have used massive changes did a really great true to the book adaption while people with wonderful books that are amazing on their own do garbage adaptions that couldn't be any damn further from the book. Like How does this happen?????

+Fernando Acosta Dracula in the original Stoker novel was closer to an animalistic predator and a rapist, In the novel he has about as much sentiment towards Mina and Lucy as a cat has towards a mouse that he's playing with in his paws just before he kills it. +SawBlood45 Well not exactly. Stanley started out portly, and thinned out after the months of harsh labor. Also, Kate was tortured by Trout Walker, she didn't kill herself with a lizard. But these were changed for very good reasons. The director was not going to make an actor starve themselves so drastically for the roll. He also wasn't going to throw a torture scene into a kids' movie.

+mrdoe97 no no and no they forgot MADGE !! They totally left her out of the movie! She was the one who literally GAVE Katniss the mocking jay pin but they literally opted out for an old woman who gives it to her in a flee market. Minor thing but they messed up how the cornucopia was too, they where on the opposite side in the book (minor but gOd). Also since they left Madge out we didn't get to see the despair in her face when she comes back home and finds that Madge is dead or how Madge visits her before she goes off to the hunger games. AND DONT LET ME GET STARTED WITH THE AVOX GIRL PLOT THEY LEFT OUT. There was no reaping fish soup, no goat cheese bread Prim saves for her sister, no the Mellark cookies, no crescent bread delivered from District 11 which was supposedly meant for little Rue (a completely gutting moment), and of course, no lamb stew! Katniss does not open up to Peeta and reveal the sweet story of her sister's goat. Nor do they share a silver parachuted feast together. Inside the cave is where Katniess truly begins to care for Peeta. So much so that she tricks him with a special broth (also sent by a sponsor) so she can retrieve his medicine. While we're all aware the movie can't be three hours long, we would have liked to see Katniss at least attempt to warm up to the boy with the bread. That makes her eventual exploitation of his love (in the end) even more bittersweet. THE MUTTS WERENT FALLEN TRIBUTES WHICH IS ALSO WHAT THEY WERE SUPPOSED TO BE! PEETA DIDN'T LOSE HIS LEG! PEETA WAS SUPPOSED TO LOSE HIS LEG?! The first movie was not faithful at all.

+AlmostLikeHuman The pirate story and the ending. the pirate story and subplot with the boy and Newspaper salesman are removed and the ending is vastly different. It gets the same effect and ends the story the same way I guess but changes means not faithful. Changing the ending actually changed a lot of the story too. The octopus was gone, the whole genetics thing was gone, the origins of Bubastis were gone, the crazy bloody scene in the city was gone. Did it do the book justice? Yes. Was it faithful? Not really.
@AlmostLikeHuman
@AlmostLikeHuman 8 жыл бұрын
Lucas Spurrell Well, the pirate story is included in the extended cut of the movie, but had to be cut from the theatrical release due to the running time. The genetics thing is not really explained, but it's hinted at. The origins of Bubastis are gone, and that makes her sacrifice have little to no value in the movie, you are right about that. You are also correct about the squid-thingy, but as you said, the story basically reaches the same conclusion and tackles the same morality questions. That being said, I would still call it a faithful adaptation. At least worthy of a mention.

+Russell Luc They left out several plot strings. For example the Hobbits came through a dark forrest with living trees before they met Tom Bombadil and his wife. The scene of the Extended Edition when Marry and Pipin got trapped by the tree, usually takes place then and Tom Bombadil comes and rescues them with his singing and not Treebeard, like it is in the movie. After Tom Bombadil they come to Ancient Graves and get caught by Ghost Knights and get rescued by Tom Bombadil again before they reach Bree. And this is just one example. ;) Several quotes got put into the mouths of other characters, scenes got shortened just to expand the battle scenes, etc etc. Oh and not to mention that the Hobbits, when they come back home, have to rescue the Shire from Saruman, who did not die in the book by falling from the tower and conquered the Shire with his Orcs. That is what Sam sees when he looks into Galadriel's mirror and he also gets seed as gift from Galadriel to replant the Shire again. That is what is usually in the box, which is so important for Sam when it fell of the cliff and not salt from the Shire. ^^ The Hobbit.... well let's just say: Legolas is not in the book! The Spiders get not slaughtered! There is no love story between an elve and a dwarf and most important: It is not said that the Necromancer is Sauron!!! They just talk about the old fiend and it is left to the reader to make his own guesses. Etc etc.... the adaptation was horrible.

But because they didn't make him lose a leg in the first movie like he does in the book, every time he's seen as "weak" or "puny" in the later movies, mostly catching fire, it's because they kept it true that he would have a disadvantage but without the actuality of why. I'm on the fence about LOTR as far as this list goes. To be sure, they had a huge book to put on film and the visuals, acting, effects, costumes, creatures, sets, music... all were absolutely stunning. And the fans were thrilled beyond words when we heard about it and just as thrilled in the theaters. And some cuts make sense, like parts of the story that just take you completely off course and drag the story. I do get that. What I don't get is why they had to change actions and motivations of principal characters, or change scenes for no reason I can fathom. Aragorn was not conflicted about being king. Frodo never told Sam to leave and never trusted Gollum more than Sam. Denethor willingly signaled to Rohan for aid. Rohan willingly marched to aid them. Elrond didn't try to send his daughter to the Grey Havens and there were no elves in Helm's Deep! The Ents chose to march on Isengard after a meeting, not because Treebeard up and hollered at them! He would never be so hasty... Aragorn told them to light a fire on Weathertop. Sam wasn't comfortable with it. And Frodo did not squeak like a baby wraith after he got stabbed, he was talking for crying out loud! And I don't consider this splitting hairs or nitpicking... I overlook the little stuff, or the things needed to make it into a movie. Changes like these are either cosmetic and silly or beg the question... if you thought it was so great that you wanted to make it into a movie, why did you turn around and decide to change so many important scenes and characters? Some of these are bad enough to make me reluctant to watch the films again and it's a bummer because they are good movies. It's just a shame to see a great adaptation made less great but superimposing modern "relatable" motivations onto the characters. We kinda liked the fact that it wasn't like our day so much, and really they aren't as hard to relate to as all that in the book. Nerd rant done. :P
@FranzFerdinand76
@FranzFerdinand76 7 жыл бұрын
I agree that Aragorn being conflicted about being King and Frodo trusting in Gollum more than Sam are both awful because they don't match the characters' personality in the book. Those are both shitty "Han shot second" alterations to the characters that shouldn't have happened. However, the rest of the things you pointed out are pretty nitpicky. Those things are added for cinematic dramatic effect and don't necessarily undermine the integrity of the characters as they are protrayed in the book.
@daniellawson8702
@daniellawson8702 7 жыл бұрын
small changes are to be expected, however, the change they made in the second movie completely and irreversible changed the ending and feel of the third movie and also changed the characters completely, saruman was not meant to die atop his tower, period. by changing that they changed everything, the hobbits were meant to come home and find their village over run by villians and their village enslaved, they were meant to draw upon the strength and courage that they had found and devleloped to use their new knowledge and fighting skills to fight their very own battle for their people, their land, their lives, then saruman dies and the hobbits rebuild thus rounding out their experiences and giving even more meaning to the trials they underwent. i was disgusted when that scene came up in the second movie, he could have kept true and in the third movie done the exact same ending then in the special bluray edition he could have a 30 to 40 min scene that you could watch as a stand alone or incorporate into the movie that would have shown their fight fr their village, i would have loved that and so would have just about ever fan out there

@Benjamin Thiemann - that in a nutshell is my biggest beef with the film - what they did to Faramir was terrible. And having Frodo & Sam at Osgiliath - buggered the whole timeline & geography. Can agree with most of the changes to gain a bit of brevity. Leaving Tom Bombadil out is totally understandable. Even Tolkien said Bombadil added nothing to the book - he just put the charachter in to keep his niece happy.

François Truffaut's 1966 "Fahrenheit 451" is fairly faithful if I recall. It's an amazing film.

Alienart actually it is not a very faithful adaption but that was because of technological limitations of the time the film was made. The book depicted big screen tvs and bluetooth speakers over 40 and 50 years before they existed.

A lot of people planned Enders Game, but I found it to be pretty faithful. Naturally there were parts missing due to time and pacing, but it was really well adapted

Harry Potter movies as faithful adaptations? Bwahahahahahaaa. I admit they are more or less good movies (especially the first 3 and maybe 7/1 and 7/2), and they got some things right, but faithful? Nah.

Francisco Pardo Just barely, yes, Disney bought out Miramax in 1993. They also own Touchstone and use it as a source to release films of a more mature nature that they do not want people to associate with the Disney name and in recent years purchased Marvel Studios (and the comic book company) as well as Lucas Film (and all related Lucas owned subsidiaries). Disney owns a lot of stuff. Including ABC and all it's spin off networks. Warner Brothers owns the other half of a lot of stuff :)

Despite its reviews, the 2009 Disney adaption of Dickens' Christmas Carol was incredibly accurate. They literally kept every single line of every single scene the same, neither adding nor removing anything (save a few bits of action). It portrays every single character exactly as they are described in the book, and it's the only adaptation I've seen of the story that properly portrays the Ghost of Christmas Past. As a long-time fan of the book, I was stunned as to how well they adapted it.

Putting Lord of the Rings on this list is absolutely fallacious. I take it no one at watchmojo has read the books then? The movies missed the central theme of the books, you cannot miss the CENTRAL THEME of a book and be considered "faithful."Awful.

What theme do you think the movies missed?
@JonathanMartin884
@JonathanMartin884 8 жыл бұрын
The sad part is you have no idea what the central theme to the story is because they totally missed it. I should just say, "go read the books" and be done with it, but unfortunately you would probably say something like, "you are just making things up, see you don't even know," or something to that effect. So I will tell you, but honestly just read the books, they are a 1000 times better than the crappy movies. The central theme to the LOTR is that the time of Elves and Dwarves and all other races is at an end, and the time of Men has begun. This whole point is ruined if Men, led by Aragorn, do not win the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, and that is exactly how it happens in the movies. The ghosts winning the battle (and don't even get me started on how stupid that is, these ghosts are what, more powerful than Ringwraiths, please) takes the whole story and throws into the toilet. There are a lot of other issues in general but the film makers lack of recognition of this central point led them to a lot of problematic concepts that don't fit with the narrative which caused the themes in the movies to be simplistic and misguided.

Jonathan Martin I've read Lord of the Rings and the Silmarillion. I was just asking what you thought the movies left out. I personally think the movies were about as good as it gets for capturing the gist of the novels. Obviously there's bound to be misreads and things lost in translation (would've enjoyed seeing Bombadil) but that's just the way of things. I think Tolkien fans should be open to the movies; they've made Tolkien more accessible and beloved by the world. My only complaint about the movies is that a few characters were left out and the ones that weren't were sometimes misrepresented. The minor relationships in the story were somewhat neglected, but the major relationships to a large degreee were well captured.
@JonathanMartin884
@JonathanMartin884 8 жыл бұрын
So then, as a reader of the books, do you not agree with my assessment? I have issues with characters being left out and combined with other characters, but I can get over that. It is bound to happen in huge story like this with a huge cast of characters. I am less upset about good ol' Tom as I am about Glorfindel, Eladan, Elrohir, and the entire Grey Company being left out of the movies. As to your statement that Tolkien fans should be more open to the movies and that the movies generated more interest for the story and books in general. I agree with the latter part more than with the former. I love that the movies opened up the story to more people, but to say these movies (as watchmojo did) are faithful adaptations is just wrong on so many levels.

No Jurassic Park? Or Jaws? I recently read Jaws and was pleasantly surprised at how faithful the movie was. In fact, I'd say the movie was BETTER than the book since it cut out some unnecessary love triangle shit and changed the ending.
