I realize that "Little Women" is the "in-thing" right now, but on the list for historically accurate costumes? Get real. Even Laura Dern's hairstyle was extremely questionable. How in the hell did "Elizabeth" make this list because of ONE COSTUME? One costume? This list needs serious revamping.

I can’t believe you included Little Women 2019 on your list. It was atrocious in historical costumes. If you wanted to include Little Women specifically it should have been the 1994 version. I don’t care that it got “Best Costumes” those idiots at the academy know nothing about fashion history or the source material because the March girls did wear corsets and bonnets for crying out loud.

How you dare put Anna Karenina (in which the designs were a mix between 1870s and 1950s fashion for narrative purposes, aka not really accurate), The great Gatbsy (which took modern gowns partially based on 1920s fashion with push up bras) and little women (that isn't really that accurate as other adaptations) in a video called Top 10 Most Historically ACCURATE Costumes in Movies? ...Why does every entry here start with "creative liberties were taken"? That means it's not accurate. Sure, it can mean it's acurate-ish, and effective as costumes, doing what it should do, but it certainly doesn't place anything on this list. And a bodice is not the same as a corset!!! Absolutely every woman in that movie wore bodices! Unless they were dressed only in a shift or chemise or something. And corsets would have been worn by everyone historically, they are necessary boob support, not "oppressive cages" or whatever propaganda people believe these days. The recent Anna Karenina was absolutely horrid for accurate costume design. Stylized and old-fashioned versions of modern clothing it did achieve, but this spot on the list should go to the older Anna Karenina, which actually gave a clear and accurate idea of the era. Atonement's dress was super inaccurate for the period (the holes were cut into it with lasers, they certainly didn't do that back then), but it's striking and beautiful and memorable, so it achieves exactly what it needs to in the context of the movie. But it's not accurate. Great Gatsby using styles that were popular a decade later and not flattening women's chests means it's not accurate. Marie Antoinette does a great job at using stylized costumes effectively to show the over-the-top-ness of the setting, but it's stylized and not accurate!

PLEASE HELP US MEME MOM ASAP!!! Why is this video titled historically accurate when only a select few of the choices are ACTUALLY accurate? So upset to see Great Gatsby in the list, specially in top 3, because it is an abomination to 1920's. The dresses were TOO short, TOO tight, too sparkly and reflected the "steriotypical" image of the decade as supposed to the actual fashions. Stilettoes, sh*t load of makeup, cigarette holders and bare knees? God help me please. Did you guys literally include Little Women? No one is practically wearing correct hour glass corsets or crinolines, and the actual silhouettes look like mid 16th century spanish farthingales rather than mid Victorian era bell shaped crinolines. Anna Karenina is a horrible example too, because it is not accurate for ANY period. Anna herself is a mish mash of 1950's Dior's new look from waist up and mid 1860's crinoline skirts from waist down. Back ground characters like Alicia Vikander and Michelle Dockery are wearing 18th century panniers, where as one lady (Anna's lover's mom) is wearing Second bustle era dress with a very prominent shelf like bustle on her posterior. Very accurate indeed lol. Marie Antoinette is good overall, but the color pallette has again taken "artistic liberty". I dont blame this video for anything, but most of these choices were not "accurate costumes". Just because they won Oscars, it does not mean that they are really accurate. I think that movies like Titanic, Pride and Prejudice (1995), To Walk Invisible and Gone With The Wind should have been included, since they were indeed accurate. Edit: I know that this comment is going to annoy many people, but I do not intend to hurt anyone. My intention is purely for educational purposes.

1920's dresses usually ended at the knee or lower! You would never show your knees unless you were a dancer, you would wear a bandeau bra and a slip or Cami-knickers (Camisole and tap pants combinations) to hide female curves, also fringe was expensive, so dresses generally didn't have a lot of fringe, Tassels or feathers flicked upwards as you danced in a speakeasy (hence the Flappers moniker)! In the early 1920s, Robes de Style invented by Jeanne Lavin had full skirts helped with petticoats and mini panniers, were quite popular! Also mention Downton Abbey! Those costumes were amazingly accurate and showed the evolution from 1912 Edwardian fashion to 1920's Flapper fashion, quite beautifully!

Winning an award for best costume design only means it was recognized for it's DESIGN, not it's historical accuracy. My career, and my years of education, center around fashions and material culture of the mid-19th century..... This version of Little Women, is far from "accurate" in it's costumes, as well as the behavior of it's characters. Movies like this, winning awards like it did, and then absorbed by the masses as "historically accurate" are what make my job incredibly difficult from time to time. It really wouldn't cost hollywood any more to get it right, than it does to get it so very wrong. I'll never understand why designers go so far out of their way to re-invent the fashions of an earlier time....fashions that were amazingly interesting in the first place. It seems to be a little insulting to the people who lived those lives many years ago.

It seems to me that they based this list on award nominations/wins then on historical accuracy. It was lazy on MsMojos part and it shows for how mad people are in the comment section. I agree with those that have suggested it should have been named “Top 10 Most Beautiful/Creative historically INSPIRED Designs” or something like that. Don’t mess with those of us who are into historical costuming on KZfaq. We will eat you if you dare say something is historically accurate that we can prove isn’t with historical evidence. Bonnet films are for us and we will be the final judge on what is and isn’t historically accurate costumes...not the academy.

Disagree on Little Women. They might be accurate for the time but some choices were inaccurate for the characters. All of the girls turned up with expensive brand spanking new dresses at the beach. They were a poorish family on a limited income no way that they could afford several dresses each and all to have new dresses.

alice johnson And the hairstyles... I swear, not one character in the recent Little Women wore period accurate hairstyles. And the film sequences that aren’t flashbacks are supposed to take place in the 1870’s, yet everyone is still wearing Civil War attire (except for Amy)?! Like, there’s such a stark difference between the fashion of the Secession War and the fashion that came afterwards. No one should be wearing hopp skirts (without even any hoops *cough* Emma Watson *cough*) in the present day narrative of the movie. And the Marches, an abolitionist Northern family in the middle of the Civil War, should NOT be wearing any cotton.

Even though the costumes of Little Women were nice, multiple Fashion historians have talked about how many of the elements were totally inaccurate. The costumes of Little Women, whilst it had modern elements, did not accentuate the defining silhouettes or elements of the set period, making the line between modern and historical sloppy, instead of cohesive. Compared to Marie Antoinette, the creative liberties of the director and costume design not only more accurately depict the character's personality, but trends and expectations of the era. The use of colour palette is not exactly accurate, but still serves the purpose of a costume and implies important details about the characters and personalities. The other details, whilst slightly modernised in some respects, still honed in on the main features of the era, such as large hair and extremely wide and rectangular skirts. When making modern changes to a costume, the parts that define the era of the setting should be unmistakeably present, even when attempting to appeal to a modern audience.

The Elizabeth costumes are so beautiful in both films. The Elizabeth films alongside with Marie Antoinette and The Duchess, were the ones that made me fall in love with historical costumes. They aren't the most accurate, but the early elizabethan shape is there for the most part as far as I can see,and some of them are a very creative take on this shape.I am not the one for strict historical reproduction in movies and shows, especially for the Tudor era where they'll all end up with the same dress in different colours. On the other hand,I am not a fan of what they did in Reign either, using 100% modern dresses in a 16th century setting is a no.
