I've only read the first four you name in this video! Uprooted: Enemies-to-lovers is hard to pull off, but I thought Novik did a reasonable job on this one. I'm with you though; I personally liked Spinning Silver more but it was hilarious seeing another friend read it because she went off on a rant on Spinning Silver towards the end. The Fall of Babel: I think the shift from single POV to multi-POV for the series is what I've seen readers get bummed out about re: "Senlin feeling like a side character in his own story". I personally enjoyed that shift quite a lot and Bancroft does his multi-POV structures in separate parts where each different POV effectively "rewinds" to a particular event instead of interweaving them which I thought was a neat way of handling the split and the issue of the different storylines not lining up neatly when interleaved. What really got me was the ending-I laughed so hard when I realized that the whole thing was basically a real game of Sid Meier's Civilization so yeah, I'm not expecting a follow-up series. The Traitor Baru Cormorant: This is one of my all-time favorite books by one of my all-time favorite authors that I personally believe to be as near-flawless as you can write a debut so I had my heart in my throat wondering why you rated it a 1-star (assuming that thumbnail is accurate). Glad to hear the reason was you simply didn't vibe with Dickinson's prose style! I personally love his prose; it's so restrained and understated and full of subtext. He's also using a very deliberate style for these books and wrote a really great essay called "Let's Hurt Sentences" on the subject that I always refer back to before I do line edits on my own books. Baru 4 is with his publisher I believe but he's got a sci-fi standalone, Exordia, which is coming out early next year and I'm super psyched to see what he does with it. (And I wonder whether he'll use a different prose style for it.) Defending Elysium: This was one of the free short stories he posted on his website years ago so if anyone reading this comment wants to try it, you can still read it for free on Sanderson's website, as well as the accompanying annotation that goes into the circumstances in which he wrote it. IIRC, when his Apocalypse Guard YA novels weren't working out, he remembered that he had this setting plus the "instead of a boy and his dragon, it's a girl and her spaceship" pitch and turned it into Skyward.

1. Yeah, I'm really not a fan of the romance in Uprooted. I did not think it was pull off nicely. Spinning Silver, on the other hand, is on an entirely different level. Everything about that book works. 2. Senlin being sidelined into a side character is really the worst part of The Fall of Babel. And as you said, the ending was just... urgh yeah I'm not a fan of all the revelations in that, too. 3. Exactly. The thumbnail is accurate. You can see my review of it on Goodreads. I can certainly recognize the complexity and details of the book, but at the end of the day, the writing is really the issue. I couldn't connect with the writing style at all. For the reasons you mentioned. Restrained and understated.

On that Brandon Sanderson novella, it's always tough when people say you should have read this or that book. Unless the novella leaves it clearly to the reader, as in having a guide inside saying "this novella is prequel or sequel and should be read in this order", it still is the author's work to make it satisfying as its own piece of writing. Having people tell you to read other books so you can read the novella, can make it feel like you're reading the other book out of obligation, as if you were preparing for a test.
@PetrikLeo
@PetrikLeo 11 ай бұрын
I get what you mean. I usually don't mind because there is a reading order to a universe. But in the case of Defending Elysium, this was published before Skyward was released. It was written before Elantris was first published. It is odd that we have to read a book written and published last year first before we read Defending Elysium.

Cedric acknowledging what is and isn't a healthy relationship, and rebuilding his friendship with Alize i really enjoyed and was emotionally involved with. Plus all the Dragon and rain wild outcasts flourishing into healthy dragons and Elderlings was satisfying too. But I know many people did not enjoy it and struggled with how teenagery the teens were. Uprooted: DNF. I actually got through at least half. While far from good, it held my attention for a while. It just wasn't enough to bother finishing the book Defending Elysium: Hard Disagree. I love this story. I like it better than Skyward, I read it long before it was published when it was only available on Brandon Sanderson's webpage and long before the Skyward series was written. In fact, it was this book that convinced me to try Skyward. It definitely does not have the polish of many of his other books, but that is because it was more of a writing exercise than a book. That is except for books I cannot stand, of which I can instantly recall two (one is a favourite of yours [very big 😜]). 10:50 - lol I can see how that can be annoying - for me it was City of Dragons and Blood of dragons where I was so annoyed and did not care about the sex politics. In Dragon Haven i enjoyed it, as it was exploring civilisation, inventing new rules and laws, who gets to make them. Don't get me wrong it was gross - but i got so angry with the idea of "mating/ breeding" and possession and rites of a person. I thought it explored the reason for rules that was not first apparent and pulled out alot of feminist issues around respect, owning your body, people are people not things and you don't own other people, but you need to take responsibility for your actions. I think this could have been explored more by having the rainwild and tattooed politics, fitting in, claiming part of the community and integration as well. Looking more at societal rules, who gets to decide and judge and how do they get put in place. 💜📚

i didn't 1star Uprooted, but i agree that it was overhyped. Like, somewhere in there is a good story, but it felt disorganized in how it was told, and the romance come out of nowhere (i think i would have been happier if they just became friends over her time spent) I really wanted to like it cause so many of my friends liked it, but yeah... just wasn't my cup of tea. I thought I was alone in my not-clicking with Seth Dickinson's writing. I am such a huge fan of Dorothy Dunnett's House of Niccolo so the premise of The Traitor immediately hooked me. And sure, Baru's economic maneuvering is mild compared to Basso or Nicholas de Fleury, but the thing that broke me was just how exasperated i was with character development. You know, not liking a book by your favourite author is not at all weird imho. When you like someone's writings so much, it doesn't take a big step down to feel disappointed, because you hold them to a pretty high standard. It happened to me with Beren and Luthien, but then again, it was not really a story that JRR Tolkien published in that form, so I kind of understand where the dissonance comes from. It was a frankenstein cobbled together from notes and fragments and many many much earlier versions of middle earth tales (way before the hobbit was even written) The point is, the more you enjoy an author or a series, the easier it is to get disappointed when not everything aligns as we feel like we wanted.

Great works of literature, especially fantasy can be Brilliant without obtrusive sexual desires. JRR Tolkien can be a great example. However if done right, such as George RR Martin. It can work, clearly as these books you have picked do not work well in that type of writing style. As a aspiring author myself, it is hard to distinguish proper from adventurous behavior sometimes.

Probably my most unpopular opinion is I think The Six of Crows Duology is very overrated. I can understand latching onto the characters, but the plot is mediocre. I think the author could have been way more creative with the heist plotline. I can see why it's popular for its target demographic but don't understand the love from adult fantasy readers. I probably just read them when I was too old so I don't get the hype. Also, I hate Vicious, which is an incredibly unpopular opinion.
