That's the beauty with most Guns N' Roses song. They often bridged together 2 separate songs, such as Rocket Queen, where the rock n' roll would turn into an emotional bluesy track. Sweet Child O' Mine has at least 2 distinct themes inside. Same with November Rain. Not to mention Coma and Estranged.

The fact that Smells Like Teen Spirit accomplished so much with four chords is incredible, every single part of the song is great and no matter how many times you listen to it you can't help but smile. And don't even get me stared on Kurt's voice only he can produce that kind of sound, and I've never heard anyone play the song as well as Nirvana. I think it deserves to be overrated.
@hamitcampos4989

Yeah I had heard Smells Like Teen Spirit quite a bit in the 90s. Never was a fan of the hook cause of the screaming. But that's not just a dig at cobain. I'm not a fan of that kinda screaming period. Nor am I a fan of that rough what ever kinda voice metal guys do. I only liked Metalica's The Unforgiven cause the guitar, and because of how James sings the hook. I guess if Cobain had sang Smells Like Teen spirit like he did when they screw it up on purpose I perhaps would've liked it more. Cause of course in that vid they screw it up to have fun with how people mis hear it. But I like how he sang it. There's more emotion to it. It's more melodic.

Imagine listening to Octavarium (in Fm) in 30 different keys. "I never wanted to become someone like him So secure content to live each day just like the last I was sure I knew that this was not for me And I wanted so much more Far beyond what I could see So I swore that I'd Never be someone like him So many years have passed Since I proclaimed my independence My mission My aim And my vision So secure content to live each day like it's my last It's wonderful to know that I could be Something more than what I dreamed Far beyond what I could see Still I swear that I'm Missing out this time As far as I could tell There's nothing more I need But still I ask myself Could this be everything? Then all I swore That I would never be was now So suddenly The only thing I wanted To become To be someone just like him A doctor sitting next to me He asks me how I feel Not sure I understand his questioning He says I've been away a while But thinks he has cured me From a state of catatonic sleep For 30 years where have I been Eyes open but not getting through to me Medicate me, infiltrate me Side effects appear As my conscience slips away Medicate me, science failing Conscience fading fast Can't you stop what's happening A higher dosage he prescribes But there's no guarantee I feel it starting to take over me I tell him not to be ashamed There's no one who's to blame A second shot, a brief awakening I feel the relapse, can't break free Eyes open but not getting through to me Medicate me, infiltrate me Side effects appear As my conscience slips away Medicate me, science failing Conscience fading fast Can't you stop what's happening? Sailing on the seven, seize the day, tripper diem's ready Jack the ripper, Owens Wilson, Phillips and my supper's ready Lucy in the sky with diamond Dave's not here, I come to save the day for nightmare Cinema show me the way to get back home again Spinning round and round (Looking outward, reaching in) Scream without a sound (Leaning over, crawling up) Stumbling all around (Losing my place only to) Find I've come full circle Flying off the handle With careful with that axe Eugene gene the dance machine Messiah light my fire gabba gabba Hey hey, my my generation's home again Spinning round and round (Looking outward, reaching in) Scream without a sound (Leaning over, crawling up) Stumbling all around (Losing my place only to) Find I've come full circle Our deadly sins feel his mortal wrath Remove all obstacles from our path Asking questions, search for clues The answer's been right in front of you Try to break through, long to connect Fall on deaf ears and failed muted breath Loyalty, trust, faith and desire Carries love through each darkest fire Tortured insanity, a smothering hell Try to escape but to no avail The calls of admirers who claim they adore Drain all your lifeblood while begging for more Innocent victims of merciless crimes Fall prey to some madmen's impulsive designs Step after step we try controlling our fate When we finally start living it's become too late Trapped inside this Octavarium Trapped inside this Octavarium Trapped inside this Octavarium Trapped inside this Octavarium We move in circles Balanced all the while On a gleaming razor's edge A perfect sphere Colliding with our fate This story ends where it began" But in 30 different keys.

The fact that most of these songs are overplayed is what hurts the enjoyability of them for me. "Bohemian Rhapsody", "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and "Sweet Child O' Mine" are all legendary songs, but I can't help but yawn any time they play because I've heard each of them a billion times before! I don't think I've heard "Dance Monkey" before, but if it's as bad as you describe it to be, I'm glad to have avoided it. "Happy Birthday to You" is more of a cliché than an actual overrated song, but overused nonetheless. I'd rather hear "Birthday" by the Beatles, because that's a song actually worth celebrating to.

Great list, but I've got a few more overplayed/overrated to add here: 1) Black Sabbath - Paranoid Everyone and their mother had to play it in their bands at least once. 2) Metallica - Nothing Else Matters Every time a random person takes the guitar they start playing the 4 open strings saying "see, I can play Metallica" 3) CCR - Fortunate Son Every Vietnam movie/game/end credits/whatever had this song. It's great but overplayed to the full limit. 4) Europe - Final Countdown In the VH1 days, every countdown had to end with Final Countdown. Not counting the million other occasions you have to sit through it. The synth line went from epic, to meme, to triggered. 5) The White Stripes - Seven Nation Army Damn, it even ended as a football chant, what more can you say? 6) Deep Purple - Smoke On The Water 0-3-5 7) Whitney Houston - I Will Always Love You Even the memes got worn out with this one. 8) George Michael - Careless Whisper Maybe it's just me, but I just can't stand this sax line any more… But maybe it's just me, lol 9) Rednex - Cotton Eye Joe no comments here 10) Darude - Sandstorm It was a hit, it got too much radio time, then it was a meme.

The song is very very simple and how the band plays it has nothing to do with how it sound at the end, not even the solo is hard to play. About how the cover sound, I´ve never heard "smell" covers, but it might be due to production and mixing rather than the musicans playing it "too clean", if you play on the time you are supossed to then it comes up to how you want the thing to sound, producing it and mixing it too dirty would not really work as you would be straight copying Nirvana. Example: Metallica could emulate the tone and sound of the multiple covers they play on their b sides and stuff, do they? Nope; Why? Then how you know is Metallica covering BOC? Is not supossed to be a exact replica.

Stairway for me never gets old, because it was my great uncle’s favorite song, he was robbed of his life at 19 (1978) when in a pro flat track race, he crashed and was run over 3 times, he was paralyzed from the waist down and his fingers were forever disabled to an extent, He passed in 2007 a little over a year after I was born, I have no memory of him that I can remember but stairway to heaven is the only thing I have of him,

All are overrated in a sense: peooke treat them as the epithome of rock (Bohemian, Stairway) or as the best-or-only-good-song from the band (Teen Spirit, Believing, Sweet Child). The fact that that ain't true makes them overrated.
@vgcreviews8277

@@rodrigoodonsalcedocisneros9266 I get your point, but Nirvana and Guns n Roses have many other songs that are popular. I will go as far to say that almost every song that has become a staple is to an extent overrated. Bohemian Rhapsody is the biggest offender in my opinion. Since the film, you can't get away from that song. I love rock music (Deep Purple are my favourites), and people will play this song at a party, and be like "I love rock music". I'm not the biggest fan of Queen, but they have a few tracks I like, and those people wouldn't know that one or wouldn't be able to list a DP song other than Smoke on the Water. There's a lot of music out there, as good as some of these staples, but they aren't remembered for one reason or another. With that, I'll end saying that songs are remembered for no particular reason. A song will be remembered because it was played in a film people liked, or it will blow up on Tik Tok for no reason (Fleetwood Mac), or some other reason unrelated to the quality of the song itself.

My daughter is slightly autistic. (Autism is a spectrum, she's very low on the spectrum) One of the ways we determined she was ON the spectrum was Every. Single. Birthday at our house she would start screaming hysterically every time we sang "Happy Birthday". Something- she's 25 and to this day we don't know what- but SOMETHING about it drove her absolutely apeshit. As I said, she's 25 now and has learned to cope with "Happy Birthday", but I'm ok with its inclusion on the list. 🎉

Hi, autist here. I also struggle with this song. My family never sings it to me on my birthday, but every time I overhear it in public I just feel uncomfortable. Not to the point where I start screaming hysterically, but my mind would get overstimulated and maybe I would shed a tear or two. (Like you said, autism is a spectrum and different autists have different reactions.) I think this is because of the general loudness and obnoxiousness that this song usually is: people usually sing it loudly and unintentionally off-key so it creates dissonance and is overstimulating for most autistic people. I also think it is because of the huge amount of attention that you are given when this song is sung to you. Some autists don't like that much attention. I hope this helps you figure out what the problem is.

6:53 Dust in the Wind by Kansas, was also a finger exercise, that was turned into an epic song. From Wikipedia: Kerry Livgren devised what would be the guitar line for "Dust in the Wind" [from] a finger exercise for learning fingerpicking. His wife, Vicci, heard what he was doing, remarked that the melody was nice, and encouraged him to write lyrics for it. The rest, as they say, is history.

Sweet Child o’mine is more overplayed than overrated. In a time when “Every Rose Has It’s Thorn” and “More Than Words” was the basic formulaic ballad every hair band had to have to catch the female audience, at least Gn’R’s ballad has a kick ass bridge (that the shitty commercial radio stations cut out, to Stevie’s point) that still rocked your face off. Their whole debut album was a bit of a fcuk you to the radio establishment and arguably the greatest debut album ever, even with the majority of the songs a little too edgy for the radio stations. Overplayed sure but that solo is pure gold and you can take that one to heart!

I loved "Every rose...". We had "work week" at school where we were asked to work somewhere for free for a week as part of our schooling. I managed to get a spot at our local radio. The Radio boss told me that I had to be careful about what music I played, as the daytime music was mostly for "housewives at home dancing with their broom". At the time I was more into hard rock, so that posed a problem to me. I didn't know much music apart from hard rock and everything else that I hated. I understood that I had to play something softer, so the "Power Ballads" and "More power ballads" compilation albums were life savers for me. When I think back on that time, I an't help feel sorry for everybody involved: myself, the dancing housewives and the boss of the radio. I would have had a much better background to do the same thing now...

Dude, he wasn't dissing your band, why you gotta piss on someone else's? So you like GNR, good for you, but the other ballads you mentioned hold a special place for someone else. Personally never dug any of them. I am sure if I dug through the realms of rock (from the same time period,) I'd find some songs(ballads, as per year take,) that were just as complex as GNR's "Sweet Child." So because it moves you, that's awesome. Does everyone hold your opinion? Probably not. You should crank it up as much as you like though.

@@rodrigoodonsalcedocisneros9266 bullshit, it is not a ethnic difference, it is generational, everyone knew Led Zeppelin before 2000. what happened was that pop took over in the 80s, so classic rock began to be flushed out. By the 90s those bands became tributes of themselves, so by the 2000s everyone saw led zeppelin as old white man music like you described.

The trick to writing the "most catchy song" or "1 hit wonder", is to make it as simple, repetitive, drilling as possible & dont forget the same 3-4 notes for 2-3 minutes.🤢🤢 Kurt's an idol of mine, though he claimed to hate mainstream, yet wanted to make "more pop style music", maybe that was him playing with us also haha But he said this in an interview in the 1st year of nirvana, like 1989 just after they had Dave show them his immense drumming power Bohemian Rhapsody, even to this day from the 1st time hearing it, sends shivers down me timbers. So much power & true depth of emotion, that so many new artists will never even fathom. Freddie knew his time was cut short, this song was his release. Oh yea & the video took i think a few months to record some scenes, there wasnt any cgi of special effects back then, they cleaverly cut the film & overlaid it etc (literally film back then was still pictures in frames on a reel) Similar story with Journey, that guitar intro took them months to record all the overlays :p Led zeppelin - black dog. (I would have actually also said When the Levy breaks, but lets keep the diversity ;) ) Great content!
