I’m from Novosibirsk, Russia, and let me speak about some facts regarding Russian dishes. Firstly, something about food described in this video. 1. Kamchatsky crab is a gourmet food now. It was much more common in the days of USSR, but now it is very scarce and expensive. 2. The “Olivier” salad is also a modern name. The correct name for this salad is “Stolichny” (“from a capital city”) for chicken version, or just “meat salad” (“myasnoy”, this is meaning “meaty”) for a beef variant. 3. Kvass is a drink, not food. The food based on kvass is “okroshka” (meaning somewhat like “chopped”), a cold soup made from chopped season vegetables mixed with kvass and sour cream. 4. Pirozhki with any type of stuff can be baked or fried, and it is a common opinion that fried pirozhki are much more tasteful than baked (albeit more heavy for digesting, too). 5. True Russian bilni are very big, starting from about 9-10” (22-25 cm) across. Blini can be stuffed, served with dipping sauces (including melted butter) or eaten without addons. And, in addition, I can say that some popular Russian dishes are not mentioned here. These are such recipes as “kotleti” (minced cutlets or meatballs made from different sorts of meat), “makaroni po-flotski” (”navy-style pasta”, pasta with a sauce made from minced, stir-fried meat), “schi” (a slowly cooked thick meat soup with fermented sour cabbage), fried potatoes with different additions such as mushrooms, chopped onion or smoked sausage, “malosolenie ogurtsi” (“undersalted cucumbers”, quickly pickled whole cucumbers), “kasha” (a common word for different recipes of porrige), ”uha” (clear thick soup made from local freshwater fish), big backed pies of several types, “zharkoe” (meat with vegetables, stewed in a big ceramic pot) etc. Any of these dishes mentioned here are much more popular in modern Russia than Kamchatka crab.

@@user-te6zm3dd7l - hello - Borchst & stuffed cabbage, anything with Beets & generally everything I think. There is something very wholesome about Russian food which reminds me of being a young boy & my grandmother's cooking for me. My parents are getting old now & I sometimes make food for them. They do not like Italian, French, Spanish kind of food they like food from when they grew up. I inherited my mothers love of cabbage & I have seen stuffed cabbage leaves with they & myself would love.

There aren't any blini here. I see only freaking tiny pancakes and syrniki. Blini usually be cooked very thin on the whole pan. You can eat it with everything from sugar to meat and caviar. Just roll one blin and eat it. Also not borscht, but BORSCH. Without "T". Idk how did it appear...

Actually. borshch борщ, Polish borszcz. Borshch борщ (щ=shch, the soft equivalent of ш=sh) was brought to the West by Russian Jews and it was they who added the 't' ט באָרשט = t , which may have been a substitute for the 'ch', which the Hebrew alphabet lacks, Romanian ț=English 'ch'. I was surprised to find out that it's not common among the South Slavs, who have čorba /CHAWR-bah/, instead. But Central Slavs eat it: Czechs, Poles, etc. The little pancakes certainly aren't blini; blin gave its name to 'blintz', a similar Jewish confection.

To be honest the shown 'blini' aren't actually a blini but oladii! The blini are made of thinner dough and while baking the blin takes all the pan area and is thinner as a result. Usually blini are used to wrap in them honey, jam, red caviar, herring, cheese, fried mushrooms etc etc.

Pelmeni is my absolute favorite food. My mother would make it for special occasions and I'd eat so much I'd feel bloated lol. Buying frozen ones cannot compare to what you get through hand made and freshly cooked. When it's hand made freshly cooked the result is a very juicy pelmeni, when you bite into it there's so much yummy juice and the filling tastes great. Highly recommended to eat it with some kind of sauce. My mother likes it with gravy and black pepper, I liked it with mayo and home made tomato sauce, my dad likes it with melted butter. My second favorite food is the Olivier salat or whatever name it goes by in English. It's sold in every store here but it's absolute garbage in comparison to home made one. Store bought one has kinda acidic taste probably from the bad or long production. Home made is so delicious and yummy. Top tier food. I've had all the foods on this list excluding the crab dish. They are all very good.

@idavo
@idavo 6 ай бұрын
Yes - most things are alive before they are dead. It is rather unfortunate for the crab, but as part of the Food Web we all do what is necessary to feed ourselves & our families the best food we can. I know this sounds a bit cold & uncaring but the crab, in its own environment shows no mercy for its diet. I eat meat & fish - well balanced with fruit, vegetables, seeds & nuts. The slaughterman(woman) & the fisherman(woman) must use their craft so they too can make a wage, again in order for them to feed their families the best food they can. Please don't see this as an argument - it is a way of life which I signed up to from birth. Happy New Year.

wait wait wait wait hahah) what? 1) Kvas is not a food, it's drink 2) Kamchatsky crab)) Well I'm 34. born in russia and I never tried it. I tried smaller crabs, and we like to boil it, but... something with salmon would be more traditional. We r not that rich to eat or see crabs. 3) Olivier salad. It's french cousine, traditionally it was with chicken meat. My fav food though 4) Plov)) Maybe. But we in russia dont see it as traditional russian, because it is from Middle East, from the mountains of the Caucasus, from Uzbekistan, where people eat a lot of meat. Though all russians know (or they think they know) how to cook it. 5) solyanka - yes. 100% 6) pirozhki - yes. 100% 7) borsch - yes. it is ukrainian, but we share our history, food included 8) beef stroganof - yes, but I never tried it, too expensive 9) blini - oh yeah, russian 100%, though it is just a variation of pancakes. 3:51 what is this? Those r not blini, just some small pancakes, c'mon. Blini are thin and big. 10) pelmeni - ohhh yeahh. Though dumplings came from china, I lived in china for 2 years and they never make dumplings the way we do. Chinese makes a lot of chinese dumplings)) Still, russian dumplings r basically the same, but with more dough

How you can find an expensive beef stroganov somewhere?! In the days of USSR, beef stroganov was a standard food in almost any canteen (“stolovaya”), with a price of about 0.47 SUR?
