Barefoot Gen gets an extra element of terror when you consider that the original manga artist WAS a Hiroshima survivor. The visuals are a firsthand representation, and probably the closest thing we have to actually seeing what happened the moment the bomb dropped.

You wouldn't see people melting. Anyone near the direct impact would have been knocked unconscious and mangled from the blast. Anyone affected around the outside of the blast would have likely been poisoned by radiation, but their eyes and so worth wouldn't have been hanging out of their sockets. Radiation poisoning would have given symptoms of large black blisters. Most of the people who suffered from severe radiation poisoning either died painful deaths or living the remainder of their lives deformed and as cripples.

@@12227UserName wrong - there are first hand eye witnesses who described seeing some survivors with their eyeballs melted and/or fleshy tissue that had been burnt/melted out of their eye sockets dangling out of said sockets. People close to the blast WERE melted - there are corpses that were flash incinerated, this is all documented evidence. Just look it up. It's utterly horrifying.

It was undignified and horrible, but so were kamakazis and allying with Germany at the time, with the near eradication of an entire religon. Nobody truly won the war, losses were immense.

No it’s cause the radiation following would cause unknown and unwanted casualties/suffering as well as making the land unusable for x number of years . If all the bomb did was disintegrate everything it would actually be one off the fastest ways to go out. The details are graphic but unrealistic, you would blink and poof, dust and ash would be all that’s left

In my opinion, the worst part about the atomic bomb in Barefoot Gen is the fact that it is accurate to how the people died in real life, almost down to the T. This isn't some fictional exaggeration, they eyes falling out aren't made up. This is what actually happened.

if you watch the whole scene from barefoot gen, right at the epicenter of the bomb on the bridge, there's people during one part of the scene and then they disappear the next part. They evaporated. Those people literally fucking evaporated.

I watched Barefoot Gen for the first time a couple of weeks ago. I admit I'm not too well-versed in anime films outside of Studio Ghibli, but Grave of the Fireflies is one of my favorite films of all time and I thought I would like Gen. The first half hour of the movie is very innocent and as was intended, I was completely shocked and terrified during the atomic bomb scene. It lasts for about 5 minutes and the rest of the movie doesn't hold many punches either. Very powerful and ended up loving it for how it moved me.

what's terrifying is that there are some "WW2 experts" who argue that the events that inspired Grave of the Fireflies were actually more destructive than the A-bomb...which is truly truly screwed up

Yes!! I have a problem because I'm really interested in WWII stuff, but it ends up depressing me XD but I really love Grave of the Fireflies - like any of the Ghibli movies, it's written so sensitively. The characters are very real and they take the time to show things that aren't even necessary to the plot. It gives the film a pacing that evokes the reality of the situation that it's based on.

Yeah that's crazy - It's really hard to watch a movie like Barefoot Gen or Grave of the Fireflies for reasons like that. Though I do enjoy seeing the "other side" of that war (I'm American), and how filmmakers depict life in their own countries from that time.

I love Berserk, and rewatched it very recently, but the sacrifice definitely isn't THE scariest scene ever, but it does its job. Have you ever seen Violence Jack? there is a scene where someone eats their own girlfriend in order to become a...tweaked out gollum, demon...thing, then fights the titular Violence Jack, and it was far scarier, and gorier...I really don't recommend anyone watch it tho...

Actually, I think the author of the Barefoot Gen manga, Keiji Nakazawa, was a Hiroshima survivor himself! Maybe creating these visceral, horrific scenes helped him cope with his experiences by communicating to future generations how terrible it really was.

1# is the worst for me personally because it hits on reality. We all can argue others are more disturbing, and I understand that. It's just something about things being in or close to reality that really bug me because, well, they can or have happened. What's worse, this was based on a huge, painful decision in history. Cripple the enemy's most important places and take innocent lives, or continue war the hard way which was already going South for everyone around Japan. To me, both sides are to blame, but sadly the bomb was more of a response than an instigation. Honestly, what the Japanese did to civilians in China and other places was terrible and inexcusable. However, I'm not blaming every last one. Like many countries, there's at least a handful of people who disagree, but can't do anything or be oppressed or killed for it. The first bomb should have been the only bomb, but those in charge refused even when so many of their populace pleaded to give in.

I read President Truman's diary entries leading up to his final decision. I don't envy him that position in history. Continue a war to invade the Islands and watch civilians commit suicide? Watch a million kids on the Allied side die? Or unleash a terrible weapon that might end the war with fewer casualties and yet possibly horrible side effects?

It's nothing new. Civilians always seem to suffer for the stupidity of their government's reckless actions. Barefoot Gen is a case in point. The people of Hiroshima and Nagasaki died, because the Japanese government refused to surrender in a war they already lost. What was worse, is they refused to surrender even after one city already got dusted. I can't decide if that is stubbornness, or total insanity. Maybe both.

I agree.. but I think humans have always either dominated or submitted one another since the beginning of evolution of humanity. Our weapons are an extension of our development. So war is pretty much a horrible (but "inevitable") outcome of just following the "status quo" ie. Human Nature, self-interest. If we don't stop and ask important questions, stop seeing people as means to an end, then we will probably see shit like this in the future.

Here's one that deserves a spot on the list: all of the kills/tortures in Corpse Party: Tortured Souls. The scene with the children in the basement is especially distressing, but from the depiction of Seiko hanging in a bathroom stall to Mayu getting dragged and hurled into a wall hard enough that she literally explodes to Yuka's horrific death to the montage of crazed students killing each other, there's a shit-ton of disturbing imagery and blood in this little four-episode anime.

#CurrentlyWatchingSchoolDays On the last 2 eps It hasn't been great, but it's definitely not something i'd describe as garbage. Probably just people getting annoyed with the stupidity of the main character, and the fact it's pretty much got spoilers everywhere so you know the ending before you even get to it.

While Grave of the Fireflies is very sad, Barefoot Gen is barely survivable. They don't even mention what happened to Gen's family, and I will not spoil it but it's quite traumatic.

The Eclipse is definitely the anime scene I will never forget for as long as I live! I am so glad I only had to wait two years until Berserk came back in 2016, I can't imagine if I had watched it back in the late 90s and had to wait almost 20 years!

I was 6 years old when I watched "Barefoot Gen". My mom left me to watch some random inocent cartoon as she thought and I was enjoying it for the first half or so. All those cute colorful people as I used to look at in animations like gummy bears, duck tales and so on (It's been quite popular here in Russia) But everything had changed when the Atomic Bomb scene starts, I was so shocked to see this, but still got watched it eventually. Now Im 35 and it made some impact on me, and it's kind of scary considering nowadays...

Let's see: Another, Barefoot Gen, Elfen Lied, The Skull Man, and Higurashi When They Cry are some of my favorite anime, even if they were disturbing. In fact, I saw Barefoot Gen one day and saw its sequel the next day (very disturbing indeed).

Well I really was not a hardcore anime fan. I just enjoy watching these lists. Never heard of Blood C until the top ten brutal anime deaths and disturbing moments until I watched these. So I expected to see one on this list.

Barefoot Gen is so brutal. The main character watched his father, younger brother, and sister die right in front of him protecting his pregnant mother. All of his hair falls out due to radiation so you question if he's going to die, his pregnant mother gives birth, only for the baby to die of starvation not long after. There is so much more-- Absolutely heart breaking.

Barefoot Gen is one of those great movies that I will never watch again. The author of the manga the movie is based on was a Hiroshima survivor himself and while he did change the character names, most of the things in the books/movies actually happened to him. It is a horrifying reminder of this tragic incident that was brought upon by stubbornness, ego, old beliefs and war.

The atomic bomb and Kaneki's torture scenes are probably the only scenes that actually haunt me. I've seen a helluva lot of horror and it takes a lot to REALLY scare me.
