+1 to Ray's book!!! My girlfriend got this for me one Christmas on a whim (she just knew i liked playing games at bars and prob grabbed one of the first billiards books she saw). However, I can't stress this enough -- this book literally increased my game 10-fold from an average " I play while drinking in a bar just to pocket balls" to "I critically think about strategy/position after discovering cue ball reaction." If you have never read this, please do yourself a favor and pick up a copy immediately!

A huge thank you for sharing this video, Dr. Dave. I purchased Ray Martin's book years ago and found a lot of it to be useful but also found much of it perplexing due to the inaccuracies with the book's diagrams. Your video today really brings these ten shots to life and much easier to retain the instruction.

Borrowed this book from a friend about 6 months ago. Slowly made my way through to the end. Actually just returned it to him last Tuesday... I must say, so far just about every shot in the book has presented itself to me in an actual game; match, setting! Grrrr8 book! Helped me with my ball control and position play a tremendous amount. Reading this book has also helped me get a better handle on my speed control which in return has increased my safety abilities. A must read IMO. Of course it doesn’t do too much good unless you set the shots up and practice them over and over as I have done. Would work on just a few examples a night and at the end of the week I would notice these shots coming up in my matches against opponents.

I'm proud to say I have one of the very few autographed copies of Ray's book. Something he rarely did. Story goes how pissed off he'd get evertime someone would turn around and sell it to the highest bidder. I also took a few lessons from Ray and found him to be an excellent instructor (I thought). It might surprise you to know that he too noticed some of the flaws in the book. He attributed most of it to his co-author and the lack of technology in printing back in the day. Nonetheless, I too had noticed or at least questioned a few of the illustrations. But, then again not everyone is an engineer like you and me. heehee... Point of interest: Ray won the World Straight Pool Championship three time in the early '70's. What is little known/recognized is that he also won several 9 ball tournaments in the earthly '80's. The last I heard he's still alive and playing down in the Tampa area.

That is awesome that Ray is still playing. He must be at least 80. There are videos on youtube of him playing 9 ball against Marty Herman, probably around 30 yrs ago.

Another note of interest is that Ray had/has a reputation of being able to draw the cue ball two and a half times the length of a nine foot table. I can't speak for the rest of the world, but in my 75 years on this planet I've never seen anyone else even come close to such a feat. Maybe Dr. Dave can offer up some physics to explain how this could be done by us mere mortals.

Thanks alot Doc! You're right there's a lot of cool information in Ray's book. Just like you said it's not possible to make all those shots the way they are diagrammed! Unfortunately I loaned my book out to a friend and never got it back! At least not yet! You're right about olhausen tables not accepting some of those spin shots with speed! I love the way the table plays except for the angle of the cut on the rails and deep shelves. Thanks for picking out some of the most pertinent shots! Great topic as usual! Thank you a bunch DOC. Dave, you are like a god to me. I cannot imagine a phrase nice enough to thank you. I'd really like to watch a video with dirty messy bar pool tables, those that spin are very hard to achieve.

That is kind of you. Good idea to do a video on a crappy bar table. I'll add it to my list. But basically, you need to use a lower tip and more speed on stop and draw shots, you need to adjust a little more for throw, and you need to aim banks a little longer (since they will come up shorter).

I remember reading this book as a kid just a few years after it came out. I checked it out from my public library and read it over and over. I was so confused on many of the diagrams for the exact reasons you mentioned. Some of the shots were outright impossible.

Just dropping by to add my two cents . . . I play a lot of 3-cushion, so I noticed that at the 1:50 mark, you illustrate the desired cueball path, using your fingers to calculate the initial angle into the first rail. In 48 years of playing, I discovered that (using your diagramed cueball path) the angle into the first rail is nearly identical to the angle off the second rail. By visualizing that second-rail path first (I use my cue to 'see' that path), to find what line you want the cueball to follow, you'd then parallel over to the 'ghost ball' contact point of the first ball. This method has worked fairly accurately for me like forever, especially when calculating 3-cushion return paths.

The tip I have used the most is Triangle, but I'm not too picky. As long as the tip holds chalk, it is good enough for me. Although, I generally like a harder tip for the reasons here: billiards.colostate.edu/faq/cue-tip/hardness/

3:03 if the frozen shot it more than I think I can throw it I use the opposite english for what you would use to throw a regular shot. For the shot you set up it would be inside or right hand english.

On banking. The simplest way to bank w/out thinking, using diamonds or anything else is to turn the table over. For one rail banks just see the pocket in front of you & shoot the shot where the rail & imaginary pocket meet. It’s worked for me for 40 yrs.

Agreed. Nothing is better than perfect bank-aim intuition built up from years of success practice and experience. For the people who don't yet have perfect intuition, kicking and banking systems can be very helpful.

Your presentation style is easy to understand, very informative and well-explained thru practical shot examples. As a Filipino amateur player having played years ago with pro-level players back in the Philippines, I always go by feel on the english, on the stroke, etc. Learn some tips from my opponents but not by much as it wasn’t explained thoroughly. I just wish you have a chance to collaborate to make a book with Efren Reyes. All that knowledge he has is just wasting away.

I'm not the best person to do such a video because I haven't done it myself, and I don't think it is the best use of time. It is better to instead spend the time mastering the game with your dominant arm. It is also good to practice with the mechanical bridge, IMO.

Hello Dr. Dave, how often do you play a day, and how often do you clean your pool balls?

I play a few times a week. I only clean the balls when they look dirty. Sometimes I go weeks or months with cleaning all of them; although, I do spot clean them with a wet fingernail whenever I see a mark or smudge. Anyone have advice on Martin's #43 (The Carom Shot) I cant get his aming method to work. Does it have to do with how much roll the cue ball has? Maybe im just doing it wrong.

Why don’t snooker players use theese tactics more often when the object ball is close to the cushion? It looks so easy when you do it! I’m new to the channel, and close to useless on the pool table. So I’m interested to know. Appreciation for the channel from Norway:)

Rail cut shots are brutal on a snooker table. The curved pockets spit them out easily.
