Darshan 20/20 hindsight we all have a different perspective. Remember when 2001 came out it was nearly uniformly panned by the critics (establishment). Hundreds walked out during its premiere even Rock Hudson saying something like “will someone tell me what the hell this is about?” Maybe bc long scenes sans dialogues. Some obscure probability younger critics liked it though & ppl started lining up for blocks to score a ticket at cinemas. Like Woodstock 1969 baby boomers embraced it. My guess 2001 was way ahead of its time.

Kubrick and 2001 does not need an accolade to proove anything. Both Mr. Stanley Kubrick and 2001, will transcent the time barrier to eternity. The movie and director will be remebered till the end of time. That is the greatest Award..

I really don't think it is overrated. At least not enough to call it winning over the other two a huge upset. All three have this nostalgic balance that makes them all so good. If you actually watch it from beginning to end, you feel is genuine sorrow, but also completeness after vicariously living through the man's life. Just because there isn't really any "pure action" in it should not mean that it is lesser than the other two.

Robin Creamer Im a huge fan of Saving Private Ryan. But, lets be real. After the first 30 minutes, ( those 30 min. might be the best movie ever made) Private Ryan is rather ordinary. Matt Damon is AWFUL in thw title role. Easily his wotst performance. Hanks' "EARN THIS" makes the last scene. When i saw Shakespeare in Love on cable i fully expected to hate it cause it 'stole' the Oscar from SPR. I was shocked to see a film that was consistently good grom the first scrne to the last. Paltrow (who I detest) gave a beautiful, excellent performance. Even Ben Affleck doesnt slouch here. Jodeph Fiennes, Judy Dench, on and on. It was witty, heartbreaking. I WAS SHOCKED. Overall, its a better film than Private Ryan. It HURTS me to say it, but its true. I know Omaha beach as an extended sequence is the best scene in movie history, but........A monumental 30 minutes is not better than 2 hours of quiet excellence.

The cavalry always gets a bad rap, but I know they did do some criminal deeds to Indians. Id go to Canada too. It was beautifully directed and well acted. Some of this comes down to your taste in films and opinion. ID vote for DWW !

@Diego Pisfil I would just add it if I agree. I rarely agree with the Oscar choices. Saw "Out Of Africa" (not impressed); have heard of "Ran"... definitely need to see it. As it is, '85 was an amazing year for movies. I highly suspect "Ran" would be another favorite. I should try to arrange to binge-watch some Kurosawa films. Only one I've seen is "Seven Samurai", or whatever the Japanese title is. Great film. The story of how "Ran" missed out on an Oscar nomination, even for Best Foreign Film , Is pretty ridiculous-- all about rules, policies & timing. You can find a NY Times article about it for the details. I'd include a link, but I'm using my phone, which limits me to one window at a time. Just search for "How Kurosawa's 'Ran' missed out on an Oscar", if you don't already know the story. My 1985 favorites, inpo (in no particular order): "The Breakfast Club" "The Purple Rose Of Cairo" "Clue" "After Hours" "Runaway Train" "Better Off Dead" "Back To The Future"

@waynechapman9823 4 жыл бұрын
@@roxy5588 "An American in Paris" won Best Picture the year before, and I think at the time critics believed it to be of higher quality than the Gene Kelly musical that followed. The setting and the extended ballet sequence likely had much to do with that. Of course, "Singin' in the Rain" provided a satirical look at the transition between the Silent Era and the talkies that followed in the wake of the success of "The Jazz Singer," and perhaps Hollywood just wasn't amused. But it should have been obvious how brilliant the film was as a musical, and that excellence is what has endured 60 years later.

As much as I love Apocalypse Now, it is not Best Picture quality. It's bascialy two pictures jammed together: the lively, often witty, and exciting trip up the river, and the part that's more like wading through a tub of peanut butter at Kurz's camp. Don't get me wrong. I love the movie, but it seems like two different writers and directors took their work and mashed them up.

@BrianKellyisGay
@BrianKellyisGay 4 жыл бұрын
Person Time The Dark Knight owes a lot of its popularity to comic book movies being in the mainstream at the moment. Slumdog Millionaire was to Bollywood as the Dark Knight was to superhero films, so that doesn’t hold water ;) Also, Slumdog Millionaire was a significantly-innovative technical marvel and was well written to boot. The Dark Knight doing everything within a comic scope surely amplified its importance, so if it were a regular cop movie-replace the joker with an escapee and Batman with a suited heistman-it would lose most of its relevance. But alas it is a comic book movie and for that reason I’ll admit it is one of the most influential films ever, but that doesn’t mean it was better at the time, is more important to WORLD cinema, or even is today better Slumdog Millionaire, which is a film I would watch over The Dark Knight anyday.
@persontime4569
@persontime4569 4 жыл бұрын
Wheeler Knight I can see what you’re saying but I’ve watched TDK numerous times over the past and it still hasn’t gotten old. For starters, Heath Ledger’s performance as Joker is probably the best performance from the past 20 years and one of the most iconic portrayals of any character in any medium, like to this day people still talk about how legendary his performance was. Also, The Dark Knight isn’t really a superhero movie so much as it is a crime/drama film. It tackles many complex themes and has a lot of different things going on like Harvey Dent’s downfall, the mafia controlling Gotham, Batman struggling with his personal identity, the people in the boat that have to decide if they want to blow up the other boat in the river, and Joker trying to break both Gotham and Batman. I’m not gonna rant but while Slumdog is a great film, there’s just not many films that can hold a candle to TDK. Look up best movies of the 2000’s and I’m almost every list, TDK is in the top 5.

No. "Dances With Wolves" deserved the Best Picture win. That's the problem with the Oscar season. Pretty much every nominee is deserving of the acclaim, but the film that excels in every aspect is the winner. That's, unquestionably, "Dances With Wolves".

It's one thing to look retroactively at these films and see which ones really stood the test of time. It's another to try and see them in the mindset that was contemporary at the time. Films like Brokeback Mountain and Saving Private Ryan were immediately thought to have been robbed of the prize. Meanwhile, films like Psycho and 2001, while now rightfully seen as masterpieces now, had no serious chance of winning at the time (or so I imagine).

Shubham Goel That’s a tossup in my opinion. Yes dances with wolves is long and slow a lot of times but it does tell a great story and gives it a great environment in which the story is told in. As for Goodfellas that’s a fast pace “true story” With the Martin Scorsese spin on it. It’s hard to really argue against either one of them but I can see where the argument is there.
