Julia Roberts has been making movies since the late 80's. She has 5 hits under her belt in all that time. Pretty Woman, Runaway Bride, Notting Hill, My Best Friend's Wedding and Erin Brockovich. I can remember a few days before the debut of "My Best Friend's Wedding", film critic Gene Shallit, said this better be a hit, because she hasn't had one in 5 yrs, and if it isn't her career wouldn't be going anywhere any longer.
@cherylhulting13014 жыл бұрын
It was one of Julia's stronger performances but Ellen's in "Requiem for a Dream" is a mind-blower. In fact Burstyn said originally she didn't want the role because she knew it was going to be a rough ride emotionally. But Darren Aronovsky convinced her to do it and she more than rose to the challenge. Ellen Burstyn really should have won.

Eve S. Sadly we will never know what impact her winning could have had in her. I worry that the damage might have already been too far gone by that point. Such a tragic story...,she had basically ONE person on her side growing up (Mikey Rooney) and he had his own issues he couldn’t defend her like he could have...

I have to disagree with the Halle Berry entry. All the actresses in this category that were excellent, but Halle deserved that Oscar. Her performance was amazing and extended far beyond the few minutes of the love scene with Billy Bob Thornton. She fought for that role and put her heart and soul into that role. The scene alone when she discovered that Billy Bob's character was the guard who participated in her husband's execution ran the gamut of every emotion one could feel. JMO

The one that isn't listed is the classic one were Joan Crawford actively campaigne against "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane". Joan not only successfuly sidelined Bette's Best Actress Oscar, she also accepted for Anne Bancroft who won for The MIracle Worker.
@auntiechercher42666 жыл бұрын
Despite Joan's spitefulness, Anne Bancroft deserved to win that Oscar for THE MIRACLE WORKER. In fact, Anne's portrayal of Annie Sullivan goes down for me as THE BEST performance - most deserving - to win THE BEST ACTRESS OSCAR. I had to watch it come to that conclusion. See her and judge for yourself!
@andressegui12366 жыл бұрын
Chris N Joan didn’t have that kind of influence, all she did was ask the nominees who couldn’t attend to the ceremony if she could accept the award on their behalf, Anne Bancroft and Geraldine Page both agreed, Bette was the favourite, but favourites don’t always win, in many ocasiones they split votes with another one and then a third one wins, Bette was so shocked she didn’t win that she convinced herself and everyone that Joan Crawford had campaigned against her.

The Academy has biases on their own. In 1967 it says Katharine Hepburn (Guess Who's Coming to Dinner) won over Faye Dunaway. I have not seen Dunaway's movie. But I saw another nominee, Audrey Hepburn in Wait Until Dark. I can tell that Audrey's performance is 100 times better than Katharine.
