It's definitely a great movie the surgery is hypoplastic heart syndrome which is known as "blue baby syndrome". This is the surgery my oldest son had to have and the surgery recommended my wife and I to watch this movie

I believe 2 Guns is probably as close to comedy as I've seen for Denzel. He would probably be the straight shooter as you described - he'd play a character who isn't deliberately being funny, but the situation may have humor involved.
