I moved to Greenville from Cape Cod a year ago to an over 50 no kids RV Park. The climate is ideal, the highways are not jambed. The people are friendly but finding work take time. My living expenses are half. I can live on 1200 a month SS but prefer to work PT.

You forgot to mention the problem with mosquitos. Because of the humidity and constant afternoon rains, there is a lot of standing water. This is where mosquitos lay their eggs and South Carolina has a booming mosquito problem. This includes the Myrtle Beach area as well. The other thing you didn't mention was house repairs. The salt water will eat away your house and things you own like your vehicles and bikes. And you are right about the traffic. If you want to go to the grocery store just to pick up a few things, even during the week in summer, you will be in traffic for 2 hours (1 hour each way) which is normally a 40-minute ride (20 minutes each way). This is a major reason why people choose not to live there year round. Hilton Head and Myrtle Beach are good vacation spots, but neither are great year round destinations to live. Oh, and the humidity in the summer is unbearable. It's only good if you like walking outdoors into a sauna fully dressed.

Thanks for your comments! I always felt like the mosquitos were worse in Massachusetts where I grew up than here. The biggest issue I've found is no-see-ums. No question about the heat and humidity too, but where I grew up it was snow, ice and salt that put the wear and tear on things! Our traffic here in HHI and Bluffton is definitely not bad, but I've heard that Charleston can be tough. Always drawbacks to every area, right?

I retired and moved from the Washington DC area to right outside of Columbia SC and I must say, it's been an adjustment in surprising ways. The slower pace was expected but the lack of "hustle" came as a shock. On several occasions I've contacted service people to remove trees, lay sod, fix a sprinkler system or hang lights and they would either not show to give an estimate or not follow through after giving me an estimate. I don't understand, are folks independently wealrhy and not need the money? I live in a new community and most neighbors relocated from other states and we all have made the same observation. NY and DC contractors do whatever it takes to get your business and would eat these guys lunch. Also, this is not the place for young people in the prime of their work life as there are few good paying jobs and almost none with a pension plan, 401K, insurance, or decent time off. NYC Transit Authority has entry level jobs with all those benefits starting at $35/hr with no college required. SC is where you come to retire in leisure and enjoy the fruits of your labor, not to earn a living.

Interesting video. Lots of info. Thanks for that. What about health care? What about the folks that are no longer active in their 55+ active adult gated communities? Whats available for them in terms of elder care? What about the environment? Having visited the Lowcountry a couple of years ago I found the boom of building homes and businesses distroying the nature that is the hallmark of the area. What is being done to preserve whats left? I saw so much Styrofoam it made me sick. Living in a progrsssive state (NY) you don't see an over abundance of Styrofoam, plastic bags and tosses bottle and can drink containers. What's being done to reduce all of that waste, much of which will out live all of us? On the plus side. Lots of places to bike ride, play sports and be able to stay healthy. The nature that is left is spectacular. I mean you got massive live oak trees, spanish moss, dolphins, alligators, too many types birds to count, etc. Festivals year round. In Bluffton the great Thursday farmer's market. Tremendous history. Church of the Cross still stands after the rest of Bluffton was. Burned down in the civil war. Food is excellent. I found tons of variety and as a more diverse groups of people move in so will the food choices. So the Lowcountry is some place I am considering relocating to even with the negatives that exist. But there are negatives any where you go.

Housing costs and availability. SC has been a favorite for the flipper parasites, which has resulted in a cool quintupling of house prices since 2019. Housing is now out of reach for the average homebuyer. The police here are about as bad as they are everywhere... And the courts exist in a good ole boys Network. Justice for simple traffic infractions is virtually non existent. He is dead on about that pollen here. It's far worse than anywhere else I've ever lived. It's literally 3 months of hell. The flowers are beautiful here .. it often looks like an alien landscape with the variety of bright and beautiful colors... But that pollen is crazy bad.

You can add extreme vehicle insurance costs. I just learned that my car insurance cost in SC will cost more than I'm paying now for the same coverage. And I live in the NY metro area. Add that if you get into an accident and the other driver cries "Whiplash," then you're most likely doomed even if there was no injury. Interestingly enough, there are no vehicle state inspections in SC, which probably contribute to accidents and other driving issues. Instead of charging a sales tax on buying a car, there is an annual tax/fee on the value of the vehicle even if it was not purchased in SC. On the plus side, there are few toll roads.

What's really funny is people from SC talk about humidity and traffic. While I get that it's bad, I've been to Greenville in July and August, and the humidity just does not compare to how insanely humid it gets in NJ. As for the traffic, once again, just doesn't compare to the North. Living in NJ all my life, I now can bike to some places faster than driving. 15 Minutes just to drive 1 mile. Morning commute: 20 mins. Evening commute: 1 hour to 1 hour 20 mins to drive 30 miles. NJ traffic has gotten insane! As for the Spring Pollen, NJ has the same 4-6 week time frame where everything on the ground and the air quality turns to Green. No See'um's have made their way up the coast and are now in NJ all summer long. I've been debating on SC and NC but The upstate has really checked off every box for me (Greer). Living in SC would be better than NC for me and I can still be close to all kinds of hiking in NC and TN.

California--it has become a nightmare to live here in the Disneyland Town. The seafood dept in any store is not fresh. I use to buy seafood once a week. I try not to buy it now. It always has a smell to it. The only thing is mb fishing if you can fig out where to go. Mb more south in charleston is diff. I have no idea why myrtle beach is a travel destination. Alot of driving you have to do. Dont get me wrong sc has its perks. @@lucillekochan OK, so the milleage is different for different areas so this will vary. Also, the north side of Sun City for example is in Jasper County and has higher taxes than Beaufort County. But this should give you good feel for things. A $400,000 house, in Beaufort County side of Sun City, as a primary resident is estimated to be $1,948. Non primary or non-owner occupied is $5,846. Does that help? We run an estimate for our clients depending on the milleage etc.

If you're coming from a city that has really fantastic public transportation, be aware that outside of the major cities (Charleston, Columbia, and Greenville), public transportation is pretty much non-existent.
