Sonic may have many friends ,but shadow sometimes suffers from loneliness without maria,wich is why he sometimes stick with some friends such as rouge and omega,like in sonic heroes,wich was my favorite team,and that makes shadow the darkest but lovable character in sonic universe.

MegaMan/Protoman, X/Zero, and Mario/Wario would work, but they're not that big of rivals compared to the ones listed here. Especially Mario/Wario, who only fought each other in one game. Link/Dark Link aren't fierce rivals. Dark Link is just a projection of Link and is a mindless being, not even a real character.
