I remember the Malarchuk incident when I was a kid. The blood was just gushing out of him all over the ice. The skate of the player who collided with him sliced his carotid artery, and he’s lucky to have survived that thanks to him receiving immediate attention.

I didnt watch it live as it happened. How terrifying that was for the audience. But i do remember watching an ESPN documentary many years ago about the incident and seeing the footage play out as it occured during that game. I vividly remember him after the hit, on his hands and knees watching his own blood gush out onto the ice. Its gruesome. I was traumatized by it. I've never seen any sports injury like it and I have seen many especially those nasty leg breaks (Chris Weidman, Paul George). Those don't come close to Malarchuk. I'm not sure how this isnt in the #1 spot...

I am a die hard Bengals fan and I remember when Damar Hamlin collapsed. I was getting off work to watch the game with my family, when my oldest sister texted about what happened on the group chat. I obviously knew that it was serious, but the gravitation of it didn't hit me until I got into my Mom's car and I heard the sports announcers talking about what happened on the radio. I just broke down in tears and begged God with all my might to not take him. I didn't stop praying until I had faith Damar was going to be alright. I am so blessed and thankful to God that Cincinnati and Buffalo came together to share each other's pain and support Damar. Even though the incident was almost two months ago, I will still remember it like it was yesterday. #lovefordamar 💙

Mick Foley's tooth came through his nose. In the video where he is being helped backstage you can see it stuck there when he smiles. @@vortexvirus755The Bills did NOT choke!!!! Do you have any idea what that team went through that season?! They had to have two of there games moved to other stadiums because of the weather. Then after one of the games they had to figure out how to get home cuz Buffalo was going through one of the worst blizzards in history which caused all sorts of problems for the people of Buffalo! They eventually had to fly to Rochester and then take a bus back to Buffalo and then somehow both find and dig out there cars! There were so many players in and out of games because of injuries! Then they witnessed one of there teammates/brothers literally die on the field and then come back to life again! I mean they performed CPR on Damar for 9mins and then watch him leave in the back of an ambulance without knowing if he was going to survive or not! Thankfully they didn’t make them keep playing and the way the other team and there fans treated the situation was amazing. But the Bills went through far more then any other team has gone through and when they stepped out onto that field that night you could just tell that they were tired. Normally when they play they’re running around with smiles on there faces and laughing. You’ll see Allen doing all his different “handshakes” with the guys and they’ll be dancing or showing off. But in this game there was none of that. So if you wanna say they “choked” then fine, but what I saw on that field that night was a team that was completely drained and just had no more drive left in them.

Doctors say Hamlin probably suffered commotio cordis, a rare cardiac event where an impact to the center of the left ventricle right in the upstroke of the T wave (a 20 microsecond period of time when the heart is resetting itself) disrupts the rest of the electrical signals and causes the heart to stop.

Two more I can think of are: 1) Darren Drozdov. Former wrestler from the then WWF. He was in a regular match with another wrestler, D'Lo Brown. When the two were setting up for a powerbomb, Brown wasn't able to get a proper safe grip on Droz when he hit the canvas. He fractured two vertebrae in his neck. While initially Droz was quadriplegic, he has since regained control of his upper body. 2) Zeke Upshaw. Professional Basketball player from the NBA G-League, Zeke collapsed in the final minutes of a game. Immediately rushed to a hospital, the doctors were able to resuscitate him but he would end up passing away two days later. Autopsy showed he died a sudden cardiac death.

I was in the stands for two extremely scary incidents, one of which is on this list, the other isn't. My wife and I were in the stands January 2 at Paycor Stadium to watch our favorite football team, the Buffalo Bills, play the Bengals. That crowd was absolutely electric leading up to the game and continued through the first 9 minutes when Damar collapsed. To go from an insane atmosphere to absolute, unsettled silence in the matter of moments, it's beyond eerie. The only announcement made in the stadium by anyone involved with either team or the league was that the game was temporarily suspended. We sat in the stands for close to an hour before word starting going through the stadium (not by anyone official) that both teams had begun packing up their equipment and leaving the stadium. On our walk across the Ohio River back to our hotel, my wife and I were approached by several Bengals fans offering up their condolences and well wishes for Damar. I heard the same from several other Bills fans. The other one I was in the stands for that didn't make this list was in 2008 with the Buffalo Sabres hosting the Florida Panthers. Richard Zednik of the Panthers had gone into the corner and collided with a teammate. It's something you see often in a hockey game, except Zednik's teammate Olli Jokinen's skate had cut his carotid artery. There wasn't much time left in the game and the Sabres had just taken a lead a few minutes prior, but to this day I don't understand why the NHL didn't determine that, being late in the 3rd, enough of the game had been played and just called it there. It was clear that neither the Sabres or Panthers were really engaged in the game after that incident, even though the Sabres would score another goal, there wasn't the celebration you'd see. I think the NHL really failed on that one and the game should have been stopped there.

Alex McKinnon he played NRL for the Newcastle Knights in Australia Daring a game in 2014 against the Melbourne Storms he suffered a spinal injury whilst getting tackled that left him a Quadriplegic. Also Phillip Hughes playing cricket at the SCG during a Sheffield shield match at the SCG he was batting and ball that was delivered struck him between the neck and head. He collapsed shortly after was on life support for a few days but sadly died. Was just 25

There wouldn't have been any video of it, but I don't know how you could not include Ray Chapman who was killed after being hit by a pitch. In 1920, Chapman was one of the best players for the Cleveland Indians. Against the Yankees on August 16th, Carl Mays hit him in the head with a spitball. Chapman was unable to see the pitch because the ball was so dirty. The sound was so loud that Mays thought it hit Chapman's bat and fielded the ball and threw to first base. Chapman was rushed to the hospital unconscious, but passed away during the night. To this day, he remains the only player to die directly from an on the field injury. The Tribe would go on to win the World Series that year and dedicated the victory to his memory. His death lead to the banning of the spitball, the rule requiring umpires to replace dirty balls, and the eventual adoption of batter helmets.

An honorable mention definitely goes to then New York Mets player Kevin Pillar, who was struck in the face by a 94 mph fastball in 2021. I've seen several MLB games involving players getting struck in the head either with the pitched ball or the pitcher getting hit with a line drive right back at him. The worst I remember is Giancarlo Stanton of the Marlins. If you've ever actually held a real game ball and can imagine one traveling upwards of 90 MPH at your skull, you can imagine how damaging that can be.

No mention of the HORRENDOUS career ending break to Joe Theismann's leg on 18 November 1985. But the absolute worse mistake is not only did you not mention New England Patriots Darryl Stingley's injury on 12 August 1978 at all but I argue that that should've been number one! Stingley took a hit from Jack Tatum in a pre-season game & suffered compression of his spinal cord & broke two of his vertebrae. Stingley never regained the use of his arms or legs. He died in 2007 from an illness brought on by the complications of quadriplegia. Tatum never apologized for what happened to Stingley & he never spoke with him after the hit. Could you are least pretend to research!! 🙄
