And before you ask: No, it's not lost on us that we’re doing a countdown list about countdowns.

I find the Nostromo self destruct sequence to be the most tense self destruct sequence as Ripley fails to override the emergency destruct system and cussed out the computer over it.

By far the best sequence ever! Star Trek was pure shit compared to that one. The suspense, the lighting, the sounds, the Ellen's despair, it combines to make the most perfect self destruct scene ever put to film.

I disagree strongly. In terms of a horror-scifi movie, Aliens had quite the self destruct scene. Tension and suspense, as a horror movie should have. It even has flashing yellow lights and NEEDLESS STEAM for added effect. You know, in case the crew isn't already terrified and panicking under the prospect of being blown to smithereens. Star Trek's sequence was totally different in both style and realism. The countdown was largely absent from the tension of the scene. It was the initialization, the realization that the ship that had started and represented an entire franchise was going to be used as a trap in a desperate attempt to survive; that was the source of the tension in the scene. The scene isn't meant to be a scene for a horror movie, it's meant to be a tactical victory against a superior enemy force, at a terrible cost. Not a terror-ridden build up against a nightmarish monster, but a lament and a true sacrifice. In terms of realism... as a future engineer I could never condone a self-destruct system that would spray steam into the hallways of a starship before it went up. Vent the steam anywhere except where you'd need to go to escape the explosion.

And Ripley is such a badass that as she's about to board the shuttle, she realizes that she forgot Jonesy. She then proceeds to run through the exploding ship just to retrieve the cat! xD

I remember a scene from a movie where they're like "Activate the self-destruct sequence" "The what?" "You know, to blow up the ship." "We don't have that, why on earth would we install a feature like that? Do you have any idea how expensive this ship was??" But I don't remember what it was from.

I still tear up when the Enterprise's saucer explodes as the rest of her plunges into and burns up in Genisis's atmosphere. Alien had a better and cooler destruct sequence sure, but as an old school trek fan, the Enterprise's was heartbreaking

It is hard to argue that any movie other than Alien belongs at the top of the list. That movie is what popularized the concept of a Sci-Fi stylized self-destruct sequence. Mel Brooks intentionally parodied this sequence in a hilarious fashion in Spaceballs. A woman's voice is used for most modern day Sci-Fi super/spaceship computers because of the effectiveness Mother computer's voice had in Alien. It belongs at #1 but I suppose I'm happy they even remembered to mention it at all.

Actually no. The Enterprise was where it should have been. First off, that was (supposed to be) the original Enterprise from the original series. So it had nearly 20 years of history behind it. Second, it was the first countdown sequence, as the countdown and the codes were lifted from a 1960's episode. Also, its computer often spoke with a female voice, being the first computer to do so, although admittedly it wasn't in all the episodes. While Alien deserved to be on the list, the Death of the Enterprise deserved to be number 1.

I would have to agree with the number one pick. The self destruct sequence of the Starship Enterprise NCC-1701 from The Search For Spock I believe set the tone for any ship in any Sci-Fi movie to self destruct.

My all time favourite is from Forbidden Planet. The Great Machine left by the Krell had an auto destruct. "You have 24 hours to reach minimum safe distance of 100 light years". Yep, a supernova scale auto-destruct. Makes the ones in this top 10 look pretty wimpy.

Hmm, well it was meant to be shot at a "dead planet" a small moon or some other uninhabited body. Yes? But Khan doesn't do that he sets it to explode right there on the ship. Maybe that would have been better if the matrix hadn't been unstable.

+Dracul Impaler But (just for fun let's get super technical) Carol Marcus said "There can't be so much as a microbe or the show's off." Now we know that when a person dies that there are still plenty of living cells, bacteria, viruses, and so on still alive for quite some time. Of course being that Khan and his people were genetically manipulated super people they may not have had as many virus' floating around in their blood stream, but there must have been many many cells still living. Not to mention any plants in living quarters living things in medicines in the med bay, maybe a hydroponics lab, etc and so on on that ship.

Spaceballs should have won this one for the final countdown where the computer voice skips 7, and then goes "just kidding!", and then finishing off with "Have a nice day!" I mean, a self-destruct countdown that is friendly AND has a sense of humor? You don't find that anywhere else. :)

The Nostromo self destruct sequence from Alien is the best imo. The most believable, and well thought out too. I mean, there is literally no way you'd ever accidentally activate it. And it may seem counter-intuitive to only have a five minute abortion period. However, I see that as a safety feature... Ripley ran back to try and abort it with only 20 or so seconds remaining. She failed, but still had another five minutes to abandon ship. If that feature wasn't implemented, who's to say she wouldn't have gone back 20 seconds before the actual detonation. If that failed, she'd have been killed. At least with the five minute fail safe, you still have a solid five minutes to abandon ship, without the temptation to stick around and try to continue aborting.

You missed “The Final Battle” 2-parter from Ben 10: Alien Force. After Ben uses voice command codes to give the Omnitrix prototype to Vilgax, the device’s creator, Azmuth, gives him the idea to use a similar command to blow it up, albeit in a shorter time interval than Secret of the Omnitrix. At full charge, it would have destroyed the universe. That happened anyway years later.

Thing about Star Trek self destructing ships is that (except for Romulan ships) they run on antimatter, they got tons of that shit, so ships running on Antimatter blowing up should look like Tsar Bomba functioning (except with a higher yield, antimatter having 43MT of TNT per kg). That always takes me out of the moment a bit when a star trek ship has a series of conventional looking explosions dismantle the ship rather than having the ship basically evaporate in a blinding flash.

well the reason why it wasn't an antimatter explosion, is because kirk said 0-0-0-destruct-0 instead of 0-0-0-destruct-1. Destruct 0 is meant for close proximity to planets and just activates explosive charges throughout the saucer. Destruct 1 is meant for deep space and overloads the warp core, which will give you that antimatter explosion.

Spaceballs' self destruct scene gives me nightmares. Because of the scene after Skroob says, " One pod left, and three of us . And I'm the president. Well boys, It's a very good ship, but I think you should go down with it. Goodbye!" It scares me when we see him getting in the escape pod, and accidentally sitting on the bears lap, OMG!!!!😨

Weird, I would of thought that The Andromeda Strain movie from 1971 would of least got an honourable mention.

Alien has the best, its one if the most suspenseful moments in all of film. The tension and unease that follows is something that never leaves. You cant help but get nervous even on repeat viewings. Mother's eerie voice and the fact that the Xenomorph could be anywhere makes the tension almost unbearable. And also "YOU BITCH!"

+mannythegreek Yeah, this one is the best 'dramatic self-destruct'. It also feels as more accurate one. I really don't like no.1 because it looks unnatural and fake.

+Nick Fedorov yeah it just doesnt hold a candle to Alien. Its not as exciting. Its an emotional moment but it doesn't compare to the horror that is the Alien countdown. We've all thought, "what would we do?" While watching it
