Top 10 Shoot Em' Ups on Nintendo Switch 2022 Update! (Best Switch Shmups). Hardcore shmupper returns for an updated list :-) It's been a few years since I created my "Top 11 Shmups On Nintendo Switch" and in that time A TON of new and amazing Shoot Em' Ups have been released on Nintendo's Console/Handheld.So this time around I have updated best shmups on the Switch for the year 2022 and 2021 and also give you two different lists! The first list is based off a poll of subscribers to the Electric Underground and their top 10 choices and the second list is my own editorial choice. As awesome as playing shmups on PC/Steam and PS4 is, there is no denying that the Switch has also become its own powerhouse of the genre.

I want to add a last minute honorable mention for the new Cotton Rock n' Roll. I know you haven't had a chance to play it yet, but the studio that made it consists of some ex-Treasure staff, including one of the main programmers who worked on Sin & Punishment 2. So I think you will dig it and feel like some talented people were behind it. Especially once you play it on the harder modes and not the very basic normal. A handful are calling it their new Shmup of the year for 21, so it'll be cool to see what you thought of it at some point. Oh, and thanks for plugging the Kickstarter for the Toaplan documentary at the end! We appreciate it. Really good progress so far and hopeful we'll reach the goal before end of month.

How do you think it compares to Cotton Reboot? If I had to pick one, which one should I go with, having never played a Cotton game before?

@@ryanbourgo6814 I’m pretty new to cotton myself, and if I had to choose one to start with, I think it would be Rock n’ Roll. There are quite a few different characters to play as, and their play style can be quite different from each other, so it adds a ton of fun. Watch Shmup Junkie’s recent review of it to see what I mean.

On your last Crimzon Clover vid, I asked you whether it was a good game for beginners, cause while I love shooters, I suck at em, and I ESPECIALLY suck at bullet hells. And you told me its Novice mode was a great intro to the genre, so I took the plunge at full price...and DAMN you were right!! Novice mode is still kicking my ass, but its like...the right amount of ass kicking, where it doesn't feel hopeless and can feel really fun. I just boot it up for like 30 minutes a day and have a total blast. Highly recommend it to other scrubs watching this video! Don't get intimated by the footage in his vids. Crimzon Clover is so highly ranked on both lists for good reason, haha

Excited for our podcast to drop, Mark! Thanks for keeping the content rolling (gunner)... shamefully I now have to buy and play Eschatos *and* Rolling Gunner...I'm still holding out on Ikaruga though. I'm probably totally wrong, but it just doesn't look super exciting to me.

Great lists. An honourable mention I think would be Cotton Reboot. Great aesthetics, soundtrack and gameplay. Fantastic horizontal game for the switch. Not to mention the minimal input lag. Great video.

Amazing lists with some nice suriprises along the way .... Was fully expecting a CC clean sweep. I've played all but one from both lists ... Eschatos will be on the Europe eshop from 13/1/22 Lets hope for another great year of releases and thanks as always Mark! 🙌🏻🕹

Just added Danmaku Unlimited 3 to my Wishlist and likely will be the first shmup I buy for the console after discovering your channel a few days ago and watching a fair few vids (never thought I'd hear or say the word 'shmup' so many times, and neither I'm sure did my long-suffering gf). Shame Nintendo e-Shop doesn't allow 'affiliate links' as I'll likely spend a fair bit of £ there based directly on your recommendations.

One of the main reasons I got a Switch was couch co-op, for "best" I tend to play on PC or one of the stronger consoles. I would love a short list of the best 2 player couch co-op games. Right now playing Jamestown+ but I don't think that will hold me over for too long.

Good to see Darius Cozmic Collection at No.5. For me, EX+ is absolutely awesome for a number of reasons. The main one being that it celebrates the Player not the Developer. Your World Ranking No.1 tag being displayed top right on all missions. Gives massive impetus to compete.

As those games we know already in previous systems, now coming to Switch for a refresh/additions to come up with. I wish there are more to come in the future; there is only one point for newer titles like mentioned in this video is to be porting to PC as well. Many PC shmup fans want those games to be granted as soon as the devs did. In my perspective, those beloved classics now coming in their hands (to SWITCH).

Hi, thanks for making this Video, its got me into my first delve into Shumps. I followed your advice and I got these 3 1. Mushihimesama 2. Crinson Clover 3. Dodonpachi I love and enjoy playing mushihimesama. I have a noob question Why do they call these cave games, and what separates them with the other one? Touhou was it? Can you give a beginners advice, i don't know how avoid those map blotting showers of bullets. I find my self squinting at the Switch screen. I tried using the additional displays but it makes me even more disoriented. Thanks in advance. Looking forward to more contents, cheers! ^^

I'm really happy to hear that! Mushi is a classic. So they are called CAVE games because CAVE is their developer, (like capcom makes street fighter) so they have a special flavor of design. What makes CAVE interesting is that they made so many quality shmups that they are almost a sub genre unto themselves ha, which is pretty awesome.

On the one hand, we are getting more shmups, but on the other, they are becoming more and more expensive. LiveWire's pricing was absolutely fine with me. The Cotton reboots were pretty pricy. Whereas the recent Death Smiles collection was unreasonably expensive (not mentioning the DLC). I don't know what to expect in the future...

I'm a little sad none of the Hamster ACA shmups made it in. The obvious choice is in the thumbnail, which is Blazing Star. But there are also X-Multiply, Raiden, Thunder Cross II, Pulstar and the recently-released Orius/Xexex, along with many others. Likewise, did everyone just forget about Sega Ages Thunder Force AC and Thunder Force 4? I'm not surprised to see Live Wire dominating. I voted the three Live Wire titles in my top 1, 2 and 3 spots, myself. Not only are they fantastic ports, but *as games,* they have a ton of content. Especially for shmups. You definitely get your $20's worth when you buy a Live Wire shmup.

I wonder what you feel about Azure Reflections, which is a horizontal 2.5D semi-remake of Touhou 6 - Embodiment of Scarlet Devil on Switch, PS4 and PC I find it really fun, but don’t tend to hear many shmup players talk about it.

I think importing the DVD from Japan is still the only way to get Rolling Gunner on PC. I asked the developers about it on Twitter in broken Japanese a little while ago and they said they were “undecided” on whether to release it as a download for PC. It’s a shame because I enjoy the demo a lot

Honestly wouldn’t put ikaruga since it’s such a unique game and only hits with certain people. For me I don’t like it at all and I’m looking at the collectors edition I bought with money signs because you know why own a game if you’re not going to play it? So I’d take that out and out something else? What else? Idk maybe the capcom arcade release? Or something, that might be cheating since it’s a collection but whatever

Yes :-) so it s a nice upgrade so if you have explosion you re set, but if you just have ignition you ll want to get explosion

@@TheElectricUnderground sounds great, best ofs are always fun. You have always found some interesting alternatives in past videos. The list in the video here has heavy hitters which we all know are tried and tested favourites in the genre, i guess at the minute im craving those new experiences.

This list is definitely interesting to me, because all of these are definitely great games, but they're all basically ports from older consoles and all basically from well know Japanese devs (besides Danmaku Unlimited 3). It kinda makes me feel like people are kinda stuck on all of the older shooters and haven't given some smaller devs the time of day they deserve. Don't want to sound nitpicky but I thought it was worth mentioning

Yeah that is very true, part of the problem is that a lot of the really good indie shmups like blue revolver, zeroranger, battle traverse, and hellsinker are PC only. Rolling gunner is a new indie shmup though!
